    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join The National Forum (Canadian Club of Toronto and Empire Club of Canada) on Wednesday December 16th, when Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada speaks at our podium. Mr. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada, effective 1 February 2008, for a term of seven years. As Governor, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank. Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Mr. Carney received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988. He received a master’s degree in economics in 1993, and a doctorate in economics in 1995, both from Oxford University. Prior to joining the public service, Mr. Carney had a thirteen-year career with Goldman Sachs in its London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto offices. His progressively senior positions included Co-Head of Sovereign Risk; Executive Director, Emerging Debt Capital Markets; and Managing Director, Investment Banking. Mr. Carney was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada from August 2003 until his appointment as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance in November 2004. In addition to his domestic responsibilities in the Department of Finance, he also served as Canada’s Finance Deputy at the G-7, the G-20, and the Financial Stability Forum.

    Please join The Canadian Club of Toronto on Thursday, December 3rd, when the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Fed Nor, Government of Canada speaks at our podium and discusses Ontario and the Canadian Economy. Tony Clement was re-elected to the House of Commons in 2008, representing the Northern Ontario constituency of Parry Sound-Muskoka. On October 30, 2008, he was appointed Minister of Industry, with responsibilities for competitiveness, innovation, sectoral strategies, and economic development in Northern Ontario. He currently chairs the Cabinet Committee on Economic Growth and Long-term Prosperity, and sits on the Cabinet Committee on Priorities and Planning. Minister Clement was first elected to Parliament in 2006 and was appointed Minister of Health and Minister responsible for FedNor. Prior to this, Mr. Clement was a member of Ontario’s provincial legislature from 1995 to 2003. In 1997, Mr. Clement was appointed Minister of Transportation of Ontario. In 1999, he became Minister of the Environment and, later, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. In 2001, he was appointed Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and, during this time, provided leadership for the country during the SARS outbreak. On February 3, 2007, Tony Clement was awarded the Courage in Public Policy Award from the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute of Canada. The award was given to Mr. Clement to recognize his leadership in supporting the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer Corporation. Mr. Clement holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a law degree from the University of Toronto. He was born in Manchester, England. Mr. Clement is married to Lynne Golding and is the father of three children. He resides in Port Sydney, Ontario.

    The global economy has faced unprecedented challenges in the last year, but the tide is beginning to turn. Canadian businesses have weathered the storm of the credit crunch and are turning their attention to making sure they can capitalize on the recovery – no matter where it unfolds. Please join us on November 26th when Eric Siegel, President & CEO of Export Development Canada (EDC), will address the Canadian Club and discuss how Canada’s public-sector financial institutions have helped Canadian businesses through tough economic times, and are now helping them to position for recovery. Eric Siegel was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of EDC in January 2007. He joined the organization in 1979 and has held several senior roles, including Senior Vice-President of Medium- and Long-Term Financial Services and Chief Operating Officer where he led EDC’s business development and transaction groups.
