Extremedays (2001) Aug 22, 2021

Show notes

The Bible Boys enjoy the last thrills of summer with this gnarly and radical y2k Christian extreme sports film. EXTREMEDAYS isn't plot heavy, but its death-defying stunts and alt attitude punctuated by the then-hottest sounds in Christian rap and punk music make it a nostalgia fave among millenials who grew up in the church. TobyMac sings the theme song and the Christian streetwear brand Truth Soul Armor are credited as producers, so it's obvious from the start that this is no ordinary faith-based flick. In fact, it's really funny to watch for the tiny, nearly subliminal mentions of God and Christianity wedged in among the teen angst and adventure.

Ash and Julian use this strange little video of Steven Crowder arguing with Amazon's Alexa to diagnose the pathology of the media conservative. Crowder and his then-cohost, nicknamed "Not Gay Jared", fire off a series of questions to Alexa in order to determine her pre-programmed religious and political leanings. They're clearly having a bit of fun, but it's still fascinating to observe how they get enraptured during the interrogation and seem to believe Alexa to be a real person. We use this opportunity to discuss Steven Crowder's career, the state of contemporary pop conservatism, and finally answer once and for all - is Steven Crowder "camp"?

The Pretender (1987) Aug 15, 2021

Show notes

We continue our journey through the Christiano Brothers filmography with this VHS-friendly 40 minute film about a high school boy named Keith who starts memorizing Bible verses and going to church, but only for one purpose - to hook up with a hot Christian girl. What follows is one of the most elaborate schemes in the name of horniness. Keith gets deeply embedded in the ways of the faithful to such a level that you'd think - is this really worth it? You'd think this would be a simple story where a boy would be caught in his silly lie, scolded, but pick up some decent exposure to the Christian message along the way... but since this is a Christiano Brothers film, who are the M. Night Shyamalans of Sunday school filmmakers, what happens next may instead shock and surprise you.

A "satanic panic" documentary that has become a cult favorite among outsider video fans for its campy yet surprisingly thorough research - HELL'S BELLS teaches you how AC/DC, John Lennon, Madonna, Hall & Oates, Sonic Youth, and others are all working together with Anton LaVey and Aleister Crowley to kill God and destroy the minds of young people in the process. Host Eric Holmberg of Reel to Real Ministries soberly stares at the camera while playing "Stairway to Heaven" backwards and teaches you that the music of Iron Maiden directly inspired ritual child murder. Returning guest Bret Berg of popular weekly found footage Twitch show Museum of Home Video is our knowledgeable guide into the evils of pop culture, and convinces us to never listen to rock music ever again.

Audacity (2015) TEASER Aug 05, 2021

Ray Comfort and his Living Waters Ministries present this absolute banger of a film about witnessing to homosexuals. Not one of the 55 minutes of this film is wasted - the action is blistering, the dramatic high points are at once psychologically distressing yet laugh out loud funny, and the unscripted man-on-the-street interviews are a fantastic display of Ray Comfort's unbearable New Zealand Christian wit pitted against an unsuspecting public. AUDACITY follows Ray Comfort's traditional format of blending scripted drama with unscripted POV missioning clips captured on camera by Ray himself. While it may be a routine production for Ray, it's a shock to the senses for anyone expecting a somewhat "normal" film. This bizarre structure, put to use to argue in the year 2015 that gay people should not be tolerated, creates a profoundly alienating and confounding cinematic experience that has to be seen to believed. Probably one of the best films we've ever reviewed for this podcast.

The President Goes to Heaven (2011), cTom, and Outsider Cinema feat. Lenny Flatley Aug 01, 2021

Show notes

In this special episode, we spotlight one of our all time favorite directors who barely gets any coverage in press, even by fans of obscure cinema. We're changing that today! cTom is one of the aliases of a mysterious film director who had an incredible run of directing six feature films from 2011-13. These are extremely low budget productions, starring unknown actors, but the conceptual scope of all of them is extremely ambitious. Our personal favorite is THE PRESIDENT GOES TO HEAVEN, a satire about a former United States president who falls into a coma and converts to Islam while unconscious and awaiting an illegal organ transplant. C Tom's politics are basically impossible to pin down, because his writing is pretty incoherent, but the way this film blends webs of conspiracy theories, theological discussions, and toilet humor makes for an endlessly compelling watch. Our friend, reporter and author Lenny Flatley, shares our appreciation for C Tom, so we're excited to have him back on to talk about the director's work, and Lenny's own upcoming book New Age Grifter: The True Story of Gabriel of Urantia and His Cosmic Family, which comes out on August 17, 2021.

A Christian Carol (2016) Jul 25, 2021

Show notes

It's Christmas in July! Following our traditional gift exchange, we plunge into this exquisitely edited hour-long holiday offering from Faith Leap Films. It's pretty obvious from the title that this is yet another take on the Dickens story. Carol is a horrible #girlboss who forbids Christmas cheer at the office, and forces her employees to pay to use the communal coffee machine. Can three Biblical spirits bring her back to her senses? But the moment this film feels like it could get predictable, it goes into spectacularly unexpected directions - musical numbers, family tragedy, and even a terrifying vision of the apocalypse, played out using sinisterly glittering CGI effects. A CHRISTIAN CAROL may be based on a legend we've heard a million times, but it looks like nothing else.

Quiverfull Documentary (2017) TEASER Jul 21, 2021

The "Quiverfull" movement and ideology arguably began in the 1970s with the writings of anti-feminist author Nancy Campbell, but its current form propagates through TV and video. In the late 2000s, Americans were captivated with the infamous Duggar Family and their reality show 19 Kids and Counting. In fact, TLC continues to run popular programming starring large families to this day, a testament to how gawking at the lives of huge conservative Christian families still makes for high ratings over a decade later. But in the late 2010s, filmmaker Handel Humphrey (possibly a pseudonym) decided to direct a more serious and informative piece about the movement, from an insider perspective. This QUIVERFULL DOCUMENTARY came out in short form in 2017 and promised a full length release in the future. However, this feature is still nowhere to be found. In this episode, the Boys investigate the Quiverfull movement based on their own documentary, and speculate on the ethics behind birth control, homeschooling, and living on faith alone.

Thr3e (2007) feat. Maggie Siebert Jul 11, 2021

Show notes

The final frontier of Christian filmmaking is -- horror. It's a genre that captivates even the most insular Christian artists, so it's natural that attempts have been made to create heart-pounding films that still manage to carry a biblical message. THR3E, based on the novel by prolific Christian thriller/fantasy author Ted Dekker, is a deeply confusing endeavor in this category that gets so hung up on trying to do everything that it does nothing. A terrorist called the Riddle Killer targets Kevin Parson, a handsome seminary student, by planting bombs that Kevin must diffuse by calling upon his knowledge of Bible verses. Meanwhile, Kevin is haunted by the sins of his past and the trauma of abuse he suffered at the hands of his bizarre family. As Kevin's sanity unravels, so does the plot, launching into a series of elaborate twists that test the patience of even the most devout cinema-goer. Joining us in the Sunday School classroom this week is author Maggie Siebert, whose debut book BONDING is a collection of terrifying and deeply compelling short stories that inspire waves of dread. Since Maggie is a horror movie expert with a Catholic background, we ask her - is effective Christian horror even possible?

Beyond the Mask (2015) Jul 04, 2021

Show notes

A lot of the films we cover are distinctly American, linking Christianity with patriotism and American individualism. But BEYOND THE MASK is fitting for our 4th of July special - powdered wigs, gunpowder, and plots of treason abound as a masked vigilante aids the founding fathers in their quest for American independence from the British empire. Protagonist William Reynolds, an agent for the East India Trading Company, defects from the company ranks to foil its evil schemes, and teams up with Ben Franklin and George Washington to do so. Along the way, he converts to Christianity to impress the woman who makes him the most horny.
