This tropical Mormon short film is beloved by an entire generation of Mormons who grew up watching it on VHS. (Anecdotally, almost all of our personal friends who grew up in the church knew and loved this film as kids.) Released on a VHS tape put out by the Mormon church called "The Worth of Souls", JOHNNY LINGO takes this self-worth theme literally. Its main action details a supposed ancient bargaining tradition on the Polynesian islands where a suitor makes an offer to buy his beloved from her father, using cows as currency. Thus, the women on the island begin to judge their self-worth on the number of cows traded for them. Are you a four cow wife? A five cow wife? It's time for well-liked seafaring trader Johnny Lingo to find a wife of his own, and for some reason he has his sights set on the homely Mahana, who the villagers agree could be worth no more than one cow in a bargain. But when Johnny offers Mahana's father an outlandish price of eight cows, Mahana's self esteem soars and she goes through a remarkable transformation. Everyone present learns a touching, yet extremely bleak and businesslike lesson about the "worth of souls."

Passage to Zarahemla (2007) and Mormonism feat. Daniela Jun 27, 2021

Show notes

Adapted from a YA fantasy novel written by the director (Chris Heimerdinger) himself, PASSAGE TO ZARAHEMLA takes teen fantasy tropes - such as unlocked supernatural abilities, time travel, and star-crossed lovers - and places them within a story fully based on the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Especially of note here is the alternate history of the Americas purported by Mormon lore - Nephites, Lamanites, and the evil Gadiantons are various indigenous American tribal factions that Mormons believe existed are direct descendants of the Biblical tribes of Israel. The film's protagonist Kerra connects, possibly romantically, with a Nephite boy she meets in an alternate dimension, and an incredible adventure unfolds. Our friend Daniela, an ex-Mormon with family still deeply involved in the church, joins us for this conversation to provide a huge amount of context that made this film make so much more sense to us. Her fascinating life story will surely aid and influence our future discussions on Mormonism and their compelling body of film work.

In this 90 minute long special report, we investigate the life and work of Gwen Shamblin Lara, the infamous Christian dieting/weight loss specialist whose fanatical devotion to bodily aesthetics causes her to run her church, Remnant Fellowship, in what could convincingly be described as a cult-like fashion. If you follow Christian culture, you've probably seen her name in the news this month - on May 29, 2021, she was aboard a private jet that crashed in a Tennessee lake, killing Gwen, her husband (actor Joe Lara), and 5 other high ranking leaders of her church. Many news outlets, tabloids, and documenters of contemporary Christian culture have covered her bizarre career and untimely demise - but we at Boys' Bible Study, being media critics, choose to do so through her decades of video work. She's released countless self-help VHS tapes and youtube videos as a part of her Christian weight loss ministry Weigh Down. She also releases streaming TV show episodes that seem to double as Remnant church services. We also cover her wedding and engagement videos, which are so larger-than-life they qualify as video art. In our discussion, we conclude that Remnant Fellowship is more than just using God to justify an eating disorder - it's also a full-blown cult of aesthetics.

Kirk Cameron: Connect (2018) Jun 06, 2021

Show notes

Smartphones. Social media. "Likes". "Retweets". We are more "connected" than ever before - but at what cost? The year is 2018. We are hearing more and more about a new plane of reality that many are calling the "Internet". Former child star and prolific Christian auteur Kirk Cameron's most recent project as a producer is CONNECT, a documentary about how Christian parents need to rise to the occasion to protect their kids from Satanic influences in the smartphone epoch. Topics including cyberbullying, porn addiction, and child predators are explored with a level of awkward tactlessness that is to be expected by someone who is just learning what the internet is in 2018. However, CONNECT's twist ending is a work of genius that elevates this silly documentary to a divinely inspired work of art.

Religulous (2008) May 30, 2021

Show notes

Rational-minded people, rise up! Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher's RELIGULOUS is a documentary about how religion is "detrimental to the progress of humanity". In a series of on-location interviews, Maher sets up false pretenses in order to interact with a variety of religious people who assume good faith, only to get "gotcha'd" by Maher's noxiously smug tone. It's troubling that while Maher sets up interviews with certified hypocrites - prosperity gospel preachers, ex-gays, and holocaust deniers - he's so self-centered that he never allows time for any of his easy critiques to land effectively, making his guests' sometimes reprehensible views seem tame in comparison. It's the lower-class and sometimes marginalized civilians Maher encounters in his journey that actually get the most of his aggression, and the final act of the movie is genuine anti-Muslim propaganda, stopping just short of advocating genocide. RELIGILOUS proves that the religion of liberal atheism can be just as judgmental and dogmatic as any doomsday cult.

Fireproof (2008) feat. Nate and David of Fixed Yer Movie May 23, 2021

Show notes

This famous firefighter drama starring Kirk Cameron has one of the most iconic anti-porn storylines in the Christian genre, with an explosive conclusion - but that's just scratching the surface of FIREPROOF, an entertaining yet surprisingly dense offering from the prolific Kendrick Brothers that did quite well at the box office upon its release in 2008. Not only was it the highest grossing indie film of that year, its tie-in relationship advice book THE LOVE DARE sold over 3 million copies as well, making FIREPROOF a blueprint for success in the Christian film industry. To celebrate this achievement of both art and commerce, we invite our good friends Nate and David from Fixed Yer Movie podcast, a hilarious new show that imagines what famous movies should have done differently if they wanted to make over $1 billion at the box office. They're experts in pitching elaborate product placement and suggesting money-making casting decisions, so with them we put our heads together to see if the already high-performing FIREPROOF could have fetched the Kendricks 10 figures instead.

Brother Enemy (1981) feat. Dante Fontana May 16, 2021

Show notes

In this deceptively charming yet complicated film by Russell S. Doughton Jr., the director of the very popular apocalyptic Christian film A THIEF IN THE NIGHT, a ragtag group of lost and lonely youth are pushed to the brink when their after school basketball practice is cancelled for two entire months so the gym can be taken over by a famous Christian puppeteer. In a fit of vengeful rage, they trash puppeteer David Wiemer's studio, but their plan is foiled when they get arrested and the judge sentences them to help out with the same puppet show they nearly destroyed. One by one, David uses the power of puppetry to bring the kids to Christ, but he must confront each of his mentees' personal traumas along the way. Our longtime friend Dante Fontana, a talented DJ and video artist who has been creating found footage mixtapes and contributing video collages to Everything Is Terrible for a decade, shows us this fascinating film and teaches us about the influential Iowa-based Christian film production companies Heartland Films and Mark IV Productions.

We glowingly review this 1960s allegorical film by avant-garde Christian filmmaker Rolf Forsberg that depicts God and Jesus as gardeners in the verdant hills of Mexico keeping watch on a colony of ants that represent the human race -- but along the way we end up meditating on the armageddon of intellectual property and the death of culture.

Crime of the Age (1988) feat. Dan Koch May 02, 2021

Show notes

The Christiano Brothers are some of our favorite directors. Their highly competent but no-frills style makes them the perfect auteurs to deliver a deadly serious Christian message about the dangers of sin and hell. But that doesn't mean they can't have a little fun! This comedy whodunit CRIME OF THE AGE shows the Brothers getting a little loose with the messaging, yet somehow still creating a film that is so straight-laced it's almost unbearable. Our guest Dan Koch of You Have Permission podcast joins us after hours in the church Fellowship Hall for a few drinks and a lighthearted yet deep discussion on theology, evangelism, and why it's better to create disciples than converts.
