Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) feat. Sarah Squirm Apr 25, 2021

Show notes

We turn our eyes away from the word of God in order to taste the sinful delights of the secular realm by watching HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH (1992). This almost-Christian movie warns us against the pursuit of pleasure by portraying sex, rock and roll, television, and art as gateways to the demonic. Pinhead is back, looking better than ever, and this time using direct references to biblical text to profane the sacred. We're joined by comedian and visual artist Sarah Squirm, whose sometimes shocking work mixes laughs and body horror - making her the perfect guide for this campy but extremely effective spiritual horror film.

Wakefield Poole's Bible! (1973) feat. Joe Rubin of Vinegar Syndrome Apr 18, 2021

Show notes

This surprisingly reverent softcore porn with Christian themes presents three erotic, avant-garde vignettes based on Bible stories. Director Wakefield Poole, known for his hardcore gay sex films that did well at box offices during the heyday of big budget sex films in the early 1970s, tried to appeal to a more mainstream midnight movie audience with this heterosexual softcore take on the Bible. Unfortunately BIBLE! was a huge flop at the time, but it remains a fascinating look at a golden era of theatrically released sex films that will likely never be paralleled again in mainstream cinema. BIBLE! is fortunately fully restored and available on DVD from Vinegar Syndrome, the acclaimed film restoration and distribution company who specialize in genre and exploitation film. Co-founder Joe Rubin joins us with tons of historical knowledge about BIBLE's production and reception at the time, and tips us off to many other religious smut films we can't wait to check out later.

In part 8 of Rev. Beverly Dale's Christian sex ed. web series SEX IS GOOD, she introduces a segment on kink by changing from her clerical clothing into a fetish outfit with a low-cut top, long gloves, and a riding crop. It's quickly obvious that Rev. Bev isn't your ordinary minister, and neither are her views on the intersection of sex and Christianity. Far from typical lessons that sex is only reserved for married couples, and that lustful thoughts and pornography are to be shunned, Bev preaches a far more open lesson - that horniness is NOT a crime, and that sexual satisfaction is a gift from God that can be ethically explored outside of monogamy. But are Bev's progressive views a breath of fresh air, or a symbol of moral decline within the church? The Boys watch, discuss, and decide that Rev. Bev's philosophy seems positive and morally consistent, despite its unorthodox approach.

Mary Magdalene (2018) feat. Mary Apr 04, 2021

Show notes

Happy Easter! As a follow up to our Passion of the Christ episode, we review another cinematic retelling of Jesus's life and death made within the Hollywood machine - Garth Davis's MARY MAGDALENE, starring real life couple Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus and Rooney Mara as the titular Mary Magdalene. We have some very strong words for this film, which we see as all aesthetics and no substance. Cold digital cinematography, squeaky clean costumes, and a cynical attempt to make Mary Magdalene a "girlboss" doom this film to be an unsatisfying retelling of one of the most epic and passionate stories of all time. Our friend Mary, a pop artist whose voice you hear every week as the singer of our show's outro music, joins us to talk about the lost book of Enoch, and some alternate casting ideas that would have improved MARY MAGDALENE enormously.

Famous British "mentalist" and television star Derren Brown is one of our personal heroes and favorite entertainers. Our appreciation for him, like most other things we cover on the show, is a confusing mixture of irony and sincerity that we ourselves struggle to pinpoint. Brown is essentially a hypnotist, who does not claim to possess magical or supernatural ability, but seemingly has learned how to manipulate people into feeling the way he wants them to feel. His stunts over his career have involved him supposedly tricking people into thinking they are murderers, or that they've gone temporarily insane. But are these feats real, or just well-meaning contestants playing along? This podcast episode is an introduction to Derren Brown's vast body of work, focusing on a television special "Fear and Faith" where he uses the power of suggestion to evoke a transcendent moment of religious conversion onto an audience member who is a staunch atheist. Apologies to all our English listeners for the mean things we say about your beautiful country.

The Passion of the Christ (2004) feat. @ineedgodineverymomentofmylife Mar 28, 2021

Show notes

Mel Gibson's now notorious cinematic take on the biblical Passion sparked a national conversation in its day for its brutal, unflinching depiction of the torture and death of Jesus. Major studios wouldn't back the film, finding Gibson's directorial decisions risky, so Gibson funded it himself and paid off in a big way with a surprise box office smash. But how does THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST hold up these days, nearly two decades after its sensational debut, and now with a rumored sequel on the way? We investigate with guests Kyle and Amanda, two of the admins of reverent yet irreverent Christian meme account @ineedgodineverymomentofmylife. In this anti-porn short film, a man struggles with porn addiction and lustful thoughts that are tearing his relationship apart. He parks down in front of the family desktop computer, opens a search engine, types the word "pornography" in the search bar, and just kind of sits there for a while while crying. Meanwhile, in the theater of his mind, this internal conflict manifests as a boxing match where he's getting his ass kicked by a really big guy. But the film really clinches it in its cathartic ending, cementing its status as a contemporary cult Christian favorite. Apologies for our raunchiest episode yet -- it's very difficult for us to larp as a Christian podcast now that we've put this one out.

Miracle Man (2013) feat. Lucien Greaves Mar 14, 2021

Show notes

The co-founder of the Satanic Temple joins us to give his expert opinion on the depiction of Satan in this psychedelic modernized adaptation of the Gospel story of Jesus's temptation in the desert. In Miracle Man, "JC" is a construction company owner who magically heals the sick at his downtown prayer meetings — meanwhile, the devil is a floating head whose idea of the "ultimate sin" is taking the boys to Las Vegas for a weekend trip. Before we get into film discussion, we also ask Lucien a few questions about his personal philosophy as a Satanist, and his fascinating history of activist work with the Satanic Temple.

Quigley (2003) feat. Ben O'Brien Mar 07, 2021

Show notes

In this infamous comedy with Christian themes, rich and despicable video game company CEO Archie Channing (portrayed by Gary Busey) suddenly dies in a car accident. After begging angels in heaven for a second chance, he returns to earth as QUIGLEY, a cute little Pomeranian, and attempts to right his wrongs despite being limited by his new dog body. Gary Busey's captivating performance, and director William Byron Hillman's deft command of pacing elevate this film to a family-friendly classic. Artist Ben O'Brien (Wham City) joins us to discuss if getting a second chance at life is worth having to wear a dog collar the whole time.
