Lala Kent, from popular reality TV show Vanderpump Rules, stars as Heather - a headstrong softball player who wants a man who won't treat her like "one of his projects". However, she meets someone who does exactly that. Tyler (Derek Boone) plays baseball and is even being scouted for the minor leagues, so he and Heather are perfect for each other, right? There's one catch - Tyler made a pledge when he was 9 years old that he would never kiss a woman unless he knew it was true love. When he gives Heather a purity ring, their love game turns serious. Can Heather overcome her wild past and get to first base with this virgin hunk?

Halloween Hero (2020) Oct 31, 2021

Show notes

We bring light into an increasingly demonic world by introducing our gentle listeners to a Halloween film with a Christian message. HALLOWEEN HERO is a bizarre and delightful action-packed drama from Ashley Hays Wright, our new favorite director, who has created an astonishing amount of work in the past two years alone. Remarkably, this film was written by her 11 year old daughter, Cadence. Ashley and her whole family, including her homeschooled children, have written and starred in at least 10 features, as well as shorts, TV specials, a family sitcom, and various documentaries since 2019. Their work is clearly low budget and made quickly, but that level of ambition is pretty amazing. HALLOWEEN HERO stars Ashley's husband, David Owen Wright, as a depressed alcoholic who chugs Manischewitz because he lost his wife when she was murdered on Halloween. Distraught, he plots his own Halloween suicide by marking Oct. 31 on his calendar with the word "DEATH!!". But a chance encounter with a young trick or treater (played by Cadence) gives him newfound purpose, and helps him turn his life around.

Old Fashioned (2014) feat. @ineedgodineverymomentofmylife Oct 17, 2021

Show notes

The weather is getting colder, which means - finally! Christian Girl Autumn is here. This meme aesthetic draws power from semi-ironic appreciation of both American Protestantism and American consumerism. Wide hats, fuzzy boots, and Starbucks are en vogue. Mood! Christian Girl Autumn is exemplified by a film that was made well before the aesthetic was ever identified - 2014's OLD FASHIONED. This is an auteur piece directed, written, and produced by its lead actor Rik Swartzwelder, in which a deeply Christian man named Clay is obsessed with doing romance "the right way". His theories on dating include the idea that no single man and woman should ever be alone in the same room together, so he is constantly making his new love interest (manic pixie dream girl Amber) wait outside for him like a dog. Amber is somehow refreshed by his anachronistic views, so the two cavort together in the autumn leaves, drinking hot chocolate and listening to smoky jazz records in Clay's antique shop, which is aptly named "Old Fashioned". Here to unpack this distinctly Christian Girl Autumn film are two Christian influencers with their fingers on the pulse of the intersection of God culture and meme culture - Kyle and Amanda of the popular instagram page @ineedgodineverymomentofmylife. Conservatives seem perpetually frustrated that film and television doesn't reflect their values and their sense of humor. Auteur Lenny Britton has attempted to remedy this a few times over the years, most recently with his Bernie Sanders parody film FREE LUNCH EXPRESS. Before that, in 2017, he released the pilot to a miniseries called THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BILLY POTWIN. The pilot stars child actor Jonah Britton, who we assume is Lenny's son. Jonah was somehow born with the most conservative face ever bestowed on a person, so he is cast perfectly to play Billy Potwin - a precocious tyrant with enthusiastic conservative politics. Billy terrorizes his family by constantly trolling them about their shrill, liberal views on climate change, race relations, and education. He only spares his beleaguered father, Nate Potwin, played by Christian film legend Kevin Sorbo. Father Nate and son Billy represent the two kinds of conservatism that audiences could potentially identify with - Nate is the reasonable, tolerant family man who has his opinions but just wants everyone to get along - and Billy is the impish upstart who isn't afraid to stir things up to get what he wants. IMDB and other sources claim that THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BILLY POTWIN was developed into a full show with 10+ episodes, however these are absolutely nowhere to be found, to the point where we are starting to believe they don't really exist. Oh well!

The Girl Who Believes in Miracles (2021) Oct 03, 2021

Show notes

Happy birthday Kevin Sorbo! The legendary Christian genre film actor turned 63 last week, so we celebrate his career by watching one of his most recent performances. THE GIRL WHO BELIEVES IN MIRACLES is an audacious new Christian movie that force feeds us every single cliche we've come to know and expect from the genre. Yes, the innocent little girl's childlike faith is powerful enough to literally make blind people see. Yes, the local news is so anxious to exploit her story that they risk ruining her life. Yes, Kevin Sorbo plays a man who turned into an atheist because his son died. It's all here! But we were shocked to discover that THE GIRL WHO BELIEVES IN MIRACLES takes it one step further by daring to show us an imaginative depiction of what God could actually look like. Few filmmakers are bold enough to make this attempt. Despite its questionable opinions about topics such as prayer, health, birth, and death, we simply must salute this film for going all the way.

Jehovah's Witness Short Films for Teens TEASER Sep 26, 2021

The Boys log back on to jw.org, your source for the latest Jehovah's Witness news and media, to do a temperature check on the newest trends in JW filmmaking. We feel unanimously that this Christian sect has one of the most sophisticated production setups in the entire realm of religious propaganda. All of their films are extremely technically proficient, with barely anything out of place. The actors are always well-rehearsed with perfect diction. The writing is always absolutely drastic, with no room for nuance. This week we chose to look at 3 short films specifically aimed at teens in the church. In FLEE FROM IMMORALITY, what seems like harmless flirting between high school students is treated like an emergency situation, and the protagonist opts to completely unfollow his crush on all social media. In IMITATE NOT THE COWARDS, BUT THE COURAGEOUS! the theory of evolution, kissing your date, and staying up late at a party are all treated as equally harmful to one's character. Lastly, in BEWARE OF TRUSTING IN WHAT FAILS! the Jehovah's Witnesses hammer in their favorite point - that your job will suffocate you, and aspiring in any way toward a career will lead you to ruin. (They kind of have a point here, honestly.)

The End of Days: Global Catastrophe (2021) Sep 19, 2021

Show notes

Mike Norris (son of Chuck) directs and stars in this Christian survival fantasy about a Christian community working together to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic environment as a zombie death virus ravages the land. Norris plays a character named "Hunter Wilde" who is supposed to be the heroic leader of the Crossroads campground, but his selfish actions and terrible decision making routinely put the entire team at risk. The scene where he breaks quarantine to allow a girl to enter the camp who has potentially been exposed to the virus, which has a 100% death rate among the infected, is particularly telling. But this film is actually a rebranded re-release of a 2019 project, meaning it was pre-COVID, which makes its plot eerily prophetic. But it's not just fear of deathly illness striking terror into the hearts of Crossroads citizens - the demon Baal, his demonic cohorts, and even a cell of dastardly ISIS terrorists pose additional existential threats.

Fat Chance (2016) TEASER Sep 12, 2021

A modern day morality play from a Christian lens about fatphobia and the perils of online dating, FAT CHANCE is a viral success, with millions of views on its unofficial uploads on YouTube. In the tradition of contemporary digital video content that generates clicks based on its portrayal of highly relatable ethical dilemmas, such as the popular videos by Dhar Mann, FAT CHANCE shows us a scenario that could be highly familiar, but twists it through a funhouse mirror so that it instead feels way more cartoonish and sinister. Protagonist Allison is overweight and has low self esteem, so she thinks the only way to seduce her crush is to catfish him online using pictures of her own roommate as bait. But this massive betrayal of trust isn't accurately identified or punished by the events of the film, which is a huge blind spot that completely undermines any inspirational message. The lead actress is also wearing an ill fitting fat suit the whole time, which we think is a cowardly artistic decision that pushes this supposedly feel-good film into the realm of parody.

Red Big Fire Truck (2015) Sep 05, 2021

Show notes

From the mind of a high-ranking military official comes this inspirational tale of a charismatic red-headed orphan who grows up to fulfill his dream of being interviewed on a podcast. Oliver is just a poor boy making the most of his life in a pastoral halfway house, but everything changes when he wins an art contest and convinces his father figure to carve him a "red big fire truck" that becomes the catalyst for Oliver to find his biological family. This deceptively simple film charms its viewers through layers and layers of plot that slowly unfold over time into a genuinely surprising catharsis. But whether you love or hate the film, you simply must admit - the United States military is the greatest in the world, and I should enlist immediately.

The year is 2024 AD. A father and son's candid conversation in an abandoned warehouse turns into a flashback about an encounter with some evil glasses. When Jackson was young, he and his blind friend happened upon glasses abandoned on the sidewalk, which upon closer inspection bore a Latin inscription that translates to "Unto one man, a vision of the devil". Jackson puts them on and is able to see visions of the demon world - and his best friend jacking off. Low budget CGI demonic hallucinations and a full-fledged warehouse rave scene make INVISIBLE ENEMIES one of the most fun and action packed Christian films we've ever covered for the show.
