The Man Who Went to Heaven (2021) Feb 06, 2022

Show notes

Since the dawn of Christian mass media and pop culture, people have been fascinated by stories of those who gained supernatural insight into the realms of life after death, but came back to earth to tell the tale. Near death experiences are a common vehicle for this, and have provided fodder for many popular books, movies, and daytime talk show appearences over the years. Notably, a young boy named Colton Burpo provided the vision for HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, a 2010 New York Times best selling book that got adapted into a film of the same name that we've previously reviewed for our show. Last year, we received a powerful new addition to this canon -- the completely fictionalized story of David Burrows, the titular MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN. David is a grocery store employee who was shot in a robbery attempt and died on the operating table for 20 minutes, during which time he visited heaven and learned of the spiritual destinations of many of his loved ones on earth. Heaven is depicted in the most incredible way in this movie -- CGI renderings of humans and angels look like genuinely beautiful y2k rave visuals, or Second Life avatars. The film is full of funny and shocking moments, including shows within a show (Dean Cain cameos as a doubting pastor on a TV show titled "Heaven!"). The film offers some wild commentary on abortion and criticizes spiritual leaders who deny the experiences of the common man. It's one of the most compelling films we've watched for our podcast, and we hope you enjoy our review!

Mahmoud Shoolizadeh's melodramatic morality play about teen pregnancy goes to great lengths to subvert the cliches typical to this kind of story, and in many ways, it succeeds! Ray and Sarah, who both look to be about 12 years old, are somehow physiologically capable of making a baby despite the fact that Ray's voice hasn't even changed yet. Ray, the father, is notably way more excited than mother Sarah about this new life. Ray goes to an attorney to try to prevent her from getting an abortion, but ultimately it's a horrifying nightmare Sarah has about a sadistic abortion clinic that convinces her to keep the baby. Still, what happens next would be considered a tragedy in the fathers' rights community (preteen division).

2025: The World Enslaved by a Virus (2020) Jan 23, 2022

Show notes

🦠 Captivating the internet this week is the debut movie by Joshua Wesely, a Christian influencer from Germany, whose fascinating personal life and unique creative vision caused he and his wife Isabelle to go viral on Twitter and get gawked at by a huge new audience. At first, Twitter users were simply struck by the premise of the film, that in 2025 "Christianity is illegal" and "Communism is all over the place". But after combing through Joshua and Isabelle's social media pages for clues on the artists, a startling new fact came out - the couple started dating when Isabelle was 14 and Joshua was likely 19 and serving as her church's youth pastor. They got married in 2020 soon following Isabelle's 18th birthday, the same year that Joshua made this film. Naturally, we at BBS got several requests to do a full review, and we rushed to watch the film ourselves. We found a fresh new twist on the Christian "pandemic film" - a microgenre that has naturally emerged since 2020 as certain conservative Christians felt threatened by heightened government surveillance, and spun it into fantasies that their very own reigion would be persecuted. This topic could easily make for a tedious film, but Joshua Wesley's film debut held our interest very well with delightful ESL dialogue, vivid "YouTube tutorial lighting", and bizarre subplots involving Christian hackers and graffiti artists.

[Episode contains spoilers.] The brand new tormented 17th century lesbian nun epic from master director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Showgirls, Total Recall, etc.) is the work of a man at the peak of his career, even at age 83. BENEDETTA is sexy, shocking, funny, violent, deep, and ecstatic. It has all the fire of golden era Verhoeven. He's so good at intellectualizing while still appealing to your lizard brain - sensitive and sometimes damning theological critiques weave naturally in and out of scenes of bodacious babes sucking and fucking. BENEDETTA delightfully adapts the biography of a real lesbian nun, Benedetta Carlini, while obviously taking tons of artistic license with the story that is already partially legend anyway. The real Benedetta was also an abbess granted spiritual visions that were deemed controversial, leading to a church investigation into her sexual relationship with her fellow Sister Bartolomea Crivelli. Verhoeven's BENEDETTA uses this compelling story as a backdrop to meditate on such topics as the virtue of suffering, the horniness of religious restraint, and the corrupting nature of power and hierarchy. While many scenes in BENEDETTA would offend a certain kind of Christian - and in fact, the film did inspire protests - it manages to be a powerful celebration of religious devotion and ecstacy while simultaneously dealing organized religion a sharp critique. 📿

The Genius Club (2006) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy Dec 26, 2021

Show notes

On Christmas Eve, a terrorist with a heart of gold (Tom Sizemore in his best career performance) threatens to nuke Washington D.C. unless a handpicked team of the most intelligent people in the world will meet with him to debate moral and political topics. Stephen Baldwin joins THE GENIUS CLUB as a pizza delivery guy with a 220 IQ. Also with them are a seminary student, casino owner, and baseball player who all scored high on IQ tests. What follows is essentially a radical centrism manifesto where characters are sitting around a table screaming about why gas prices are too high while a proverbial gun is held to their head. THE GENIUS CLUB is, true to its name, the most intellectual Christmas movie ever made, so we are thrilled to discuss it with a true Christian genius Trans Regret Snoopy. Her podcast Trans Regret Snoopy Presents the Bible provides a calming scriptural solace for the misfits, rejects, and extremely online.

An American Carol (2008) Dec 12, 2021

Show notes

You've heard of Christmas in July, but what about… July in Christmas? Conservative comedy film AN AMERICAN CAROL riffs on the classic Dickens tale to tell a story about a "Scrooge" type who wants to ban the 4th of July. Protagonist Michael Malone is a thinly veiled sendup of leftist documentarian Michael Moore. Watch as he praises Cuba's healthcare system, but believes that 9/11 was the result of poor foreign policy decisions by the United States. He also opposes war at any cost. How could anyone be so cruel, callous, and detached? Three American spirits visit Michael and attempt to stop him from misusing his freedom of speech. David Zucker, co-director of all-time classic comedies such as AIRPLANE! and THE NAKED GUN, uses his impeccable sense of comedic timing to bring actual jokes to a conservative comedy film. It's very rare that we get to have any genuine laughs watching these, but we do laugh during this, so we must give credit where credit is due. This rare occurrence makes AN AMERICAN CAROL by default the best conservative comedy ever made, but the bar is extremely low. Ultimately, this film is very racist and stupid. Even a true genius like Zucker can't rescue AN AMERICAN CAROL from sinking into the Reflecting Pool of its own ideology.

Crazy Bible (2018) Nov 28, 2021

Show notes

This episode came about by chance - or fate? While waiting in line at a recent Boys' Night outing to the 100 gecs concert in Los Angeles, two people passed us Christian propaganda in the form of fake $1,000,000 bills. It wasn't until later we realized this was direct contact from representatives of the legendary Living Waters Ministries. Living Waters is the life's work of Ray Comfort, a notorious minister and filmmaker whose disarming yet aggressive demeanor makes him one of our most watchable auteurs. We've covered Ray's filmmaking before, especially in our bonus episode on AUDACITY, which is the Living Waters official guide for how to mission to gay people. Our chance encounter inspired us to watch CRAZY BIBLE, which shows Ray Comfort in his element. He's combining gonzo filmmaking tactics, stock footage, and narration over repurposed youtube videos in order to show atheists that their belief system is based on the ridiculous idea that "something came from nothing". Will CRAZY BIBLE be the ultimate artwork that finally humbles atheists, and grants Ray Comfort an audience with his rival Penn Jillette? No! It won't!

The Whole Sex Talk (2018) TEASER Nov 21, 2021

www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy

A six-part multimedia program that "empowers parents to have healthy, ongoing conversations with their kids about love, sex, and relationships", THE WHOLE SEX TALK is a confusing mess of mixed messages about the subject matter paired with animation that is literally hard to watch because the motion graphic design hurts the eyes. Contemporary Christian sex ed struggles with maintaining a "cool" dispassionate tone that might appeal to teens while still hammering them with the same broad, strict rules that have become synonymous with Christian culture. This series, released as recently as 2018, heavily promotes abstinence and takes the tone that homosexuality is simply not okay - it's anti-Christian and must be "struggled with". Ultimately, the biggest flaw of this series is its insistence that something so inherently messy as sexual desire can be explained with tidy categories, such as a silly list of "the 8 steps of a physical relationship" (Step 7: Intimate Touch with Clothes On).

God's Not Dead: We the People (2021) Nov 14, 2021

Show notes

The GOD'S NOT DEAD series is back! The 4th installment of this franchise, WE THE PEOPLE, just came out on October 4th, and as of right now it's exclusively streaming on Pure Flix. The king of Christian genre films, David A.R. White, reprises his role as Pastor Dave, and many of his church members from the previous films are back too. This time, the gang are involved in a new adventure - their homeschooling co-op is being busted by the feds, including a powerful local judge played by popular Trump-approved Fox News correspondent Judge Jeanine Pirro. The church members go to Washington D.C to argue their case, and while they're in town, they look at statues and meditate on the principles of American greatness that support their Christian faith. The film takes aim at public schooling, the "common core", and moral relativism in the GOD'S NOT DEAD signature brand of witty alarmism. You'll learn that the founding fathers were not *all* slave owners, and that public schools want 7 year olds to learn about birth control. By the end of this rousing film, you'll be on your feet shouting "I Am 'We the People!'"
