    Show notes

PETER ROWAN is a true music legend. GRAMMY-award winner and six-time GRAMMY nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, Peters stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and his subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring. Peters latest project is “My Aloha recorded in Honolulu with traditional Hawaiian musicians. J2B2 (John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band) is an all-star bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, Grammy Award-winning musicians John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen on banjo, acoustic guitar and vocals; Jon Randall on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Mark Fain on bass delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. John is another true music icon. He, along with Herb, are founding members of the Desert Rose Band and one of Americas most adventurous guitar masters. WoodSongs Kids: The Riegle Family Band is a bluegrass string quartet from Muncie, Indiana.

WoodSongs 890: Lisa Biales and Amy Black Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

LISA BIALES (Be-Alice) sings with a crystal pure voice and writes music about the simple things in life. She weaves a down home blues vernacular with finger style guitar to create songs that feel like they have been around forever. Following in her mothers / parent's footsteps, this little ol gal from Ohio graced the silver screen (acting and singing) in Francis Ford Coppolas movie “Twixt. Inspired by a found recording of a song her mother wrote, Lisa goes back to her roots on her latest album The Beat of My Heart. AMY BLACK has always been drawn to soul singers. But it wasnt until she began exploring her own southern soul roots for her last album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, that she found her musical sweet spot and knew her next stop had to be the place where blues and soul convergeMemphis. Released on her own Reuben Records, Memphis puts Black already considered “a bluesy, R&B heavy hitter by Elmore magazine on the same continuum as soul sisters from Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and Mavis Staples to Bonnie Raitt and Shelby Lynne. WoodSongs Kid: Savannah Reeves is a 15-year-old singer and guitarist from Lexington, Kentucky with an incredible voice.

WoodSongs 889: Shun Ng and Peter Mulvey Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

SHUN NG is an award-winning fingerstyle guitar virtuoso, singer and songwriter, known for his unique style which infuses elements of Soul, Funk, Blues and Jazz. Shun dazzles audiences from all over the world with his flamboyant technique, soulful vocals and hypnotic groove. He stands as one of the most dynamic and innovative performers, winning accolades from legendary producer, Quincy Jones to fellow guitar virtuoso, Tuck Andress. PETER MULVEY has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana stylings over the past 20 years. Mulvey has a rare ability to hold an audiences attention and transport them, using wit, humor, and a subtle but sophisticated melodic and harmonic sensibility to gracefully introduce complex and provocative concepts and characters. Relentlessly touring as a headliner he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, and Greg Brown, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam. His latest record, produced by Ani DiFranco for Righteous Babe Records, is called Are You Listening?. WoodSongs Kid: Andrew Swisher is a 15-year-old ragtime and blues pianist from Lexington, Kentucky.

WoodSongs 888: Victor Wainwright & The Train and Birds of Chicago Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

VICTOR WAINWRIGHT & THE TRAIN features the high-octane boogie piano and big soul sounds of vocalist and blues man Victor Wainwright, backed by one of the tightest smokin bands on the scene. Victors star is definitely on the rise, having won the coveted BB KING Entertainer of the Year in 2016 at Blues Music Award as well as “Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year in both 2013 and 2014. With the release of Boom Town, the bands latest record, theyre poised to ignite blues/roots fans with a sound thats infectious and impossible to ignore. BIRDS OF CHICAGO is a collective built around husband and wife duo JT Nero (Chicago, IL) and Allison Russell (Montreal, QC). Since forming in 2012, theyve toured internationally 10+ months of the year. Their brand of rock and roll poetry can be a little hard to categorize, for people that insist on categorizing... their voices are undoubtedly the centerpiece - Nero's fractured country soul croon is wrapped in Russell's silver and gold tones for a harmony blend that is like nothing else in music today. Real Midnight is the bands poignant new Joe Henry produced album. WoodSongs Kid: Mikaya Taylor is talented bluegrass singer from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. This 12 year old is being called Kentuckys Singing Angel.

WoodSongs 887: Brandy Clark and Charlie Worsham Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

BRANDY CLARK is part of a new vanguard in country music one that tips a hat to tradition, while not eschewing its evolution. For Clark, the dream she harbored in her small hometown of Morton, Washington, was to be a country singer. Sure, once she moved to Nashville, she had successful cuts as a songwriter [The Band Perry's "Better Dig Two," Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart," and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow" which won the CMA Song of the Year Award in 2014], but being an artist in her own right was a dream she had stopped dreaming until three years ago when her first album, the stunning 12 Stories, debuted and went on to become a GRAMMY- and CMA-nominated release that topped a myriad of "Best Albums of 2013. Big Day in a Small Town is the new album from this critically acclaimed songwriter and four-time GRAMMY nominee. CHARLIE WORSHAM is widely acclaimed within the Nashville community and is set for a breakthrough year with the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, Beginning of Things. Worsha, is a ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist and student of great songs. Hes developed a unique modern country sound built around the traditional acoustic instruments he grew up on. From the Opry at age twelve to the local Missionary Baptist Church to the back-road blues joints he wasn't even supposed to know about, much less play in, wherever he found a stage, he played. For the last two years, he's divided his time between writing songs, being an in-demand studio musician for other artists and playing his music live sharing stages across the country with Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and others. WoodSongs Kid: Shelby Hudson is a 13-year-old singer from Greenville, Kentucky.

WoodSongs 886: Southern Avenue and Mudbone Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

SOUTHERN AVENUE takes its name from a Memphis street that runs from the eastern-most part of the city limits all the way to Soulsville (the original home of Stax Records). Its a fitting moniker for this diverse four-piece: two powerhouse sisters whose musical education came from the church (Tierinii and Tikyra Jackson), a jazz bassist (Daniel McKee) and an Israeli-born guitar virtuoso who grew up a student of the blues and funk (Ori Naftaly). The band reached the finals at the 32nd International Blues Challenge, Naftaly and his bandmates knew theyll be labeled "a blues band. And they love the blues but Naftaly says Southern Avenue is much more as evident from their debut album Dont Give Up on Stax Records MUDBONE tells the story of American music one song at a time. His performances reach a broad audience by taking them on a journey from the late 19th century when bluegrass met the blues, through the country, soul, funk, and rock & roll of the 20th century. He was born near the Black River in Northeast Arkansas. That river is the dividing line between the Mississippi River Delta and the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. Combining his abilities as a guitarist with fiery vocals, Mudbone has developed a signature sound that appeals to a wide demographic while remaining uniquely his own. His latest release Rivers', part 1 of the 2 disc set Rivers and Roads, is a reflection of old world delta blues, bluegrass and gospel music flowing together in the river they all come from.

WoodSongs 885: Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge and Aoife O'Donovan Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

JULIAN LAGE & CHRIS ELDRIDGE first full-length album Avalon is a vivid snapshot of this duos repertoire, circa 2014; a portrait of a burgeoning friendship between two virtuosic players; and, at its heart, a pristinely recorded love letter to the sound of the acoustic guitar. Lage has, since childhood, been highly regarded in jazz and new music circles for his own work as well as for his collaborations with such artists as Gary Burton, Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, and Jim Hall, among many others. Chris Eldridge is equally noted in the progressive bluegrass world for his stints with The Seldom Scene and The Infamous Stringdusters, which led to his joining Chris Thile's adventurous, Grammy-nominated quintet, Punch Brothers. AOIFE ODONOVAN has gained wide recognition through an impressive list of projects including the captivating lead singer of the Boston-based progressive string band Crooked Still and The Goat Rodeo Sessions (with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile). The Washington Post describes her singing as “almost too gorgeous for its own good. She has made regular appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and collaborated with some of the most eminent names in music across a wide variety of genres from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas. Her latest release is Man in The Neon Coat: Live in Cambridge. The album features live trio performances of tracks from Aoife's two critically acclaimed releases as well as covers of Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris classics. WoodSongs Kid: Beth Davis is award winning fiddle player and singer from Carbondale, Illinois. She is 12 years old.

WoodSongs 884: Guy Davis and Fabrizio Poggi and The Affrilachian Poets Sep 22, 2017
    Show notes

GUY DAVIS and FABRIZIO POGGI pay homage to the legendary blues duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee on their latest release Sonny & Brownies Last Train on MC Records. The deep, acoustic blues sessions for the album took place in Milan Italy and were recorded live in the studio. The result captured the special musical connection that “The Ambassador of the Blues" and this award winning international harmonica sensation possess from the years of playing and recording together. THE AFFRILACHIAN POETS have been writing together, defying the persistent stereotype of a racially homogenized rural region of Appalachia since 1991. The term "Affrilachia" was originally coined by Frank X Walker who was named the youngest Poet Laureate of Kentucky in 2013. Through their writing and the very existence of their enclave, the Affrilachian Poets continue to reveal relationships that link identity to familial roots, socio-economic stratification and cultural influence, and an inherent connection to the land. An all-star team of poets lead by Frank X and Bianca Spriggs will read and discuss their poetry, the 25th Anniversary of the group and the release of the Black Bone Anthology. Reknown Louisville jazz pianist Harry Pickens will appear as a special guest to back the poets readings. WoodSongs Kid: Zakia Holland-Tucker is lives in Richmond, Kentucky and attends Madison Central High School. She is one of newest members of the Affrilachian Poets.
