    Show notes

    Keeping Your Promise

    Imagine this.
You make a date to meet a friend for lunch.
At the time you need to leave your house, you don’t feel like meeting this friend.

    But nothing is really wrong.
She’s already on the way there, so it’s too late to cancel.
And she is counting on you being there.

Do you just not show up?
Do you just blow off the date because you don’t feel like going?

My guess is that you keep your promise to your friend and show up for your date.
You care about what she will think.
You care about how she views you.
You care about being the kind of person who does what she says she will do.

So how do we translate this skill, that you already have, to you?
And train yourself to do what you say you will do?

That is what we will cover in your coaching session today.
We will talk about all the different kinds of promises you might make.
And all the excitement you have when you first make them.

I know you think that excitement will help you follow through. And it does, to some extent. But you also need to take action. And practice taking action over and over again.

We will talk about why it’s easier to make and keep promises in the morning and how to create momentum that will help you stay true to your word even as the day goes on.

You’ll learn why planning on a deep level really helps make keeping those promises easier, and how to plan and break down that promise into small doable steps.

Imagine now how amazing it would feel to do exactly what you said you would do, just like honoring that promise to a friend who is sitting waiting for you at lunch.

You can do this, and I will help you.

Episode 211 – How to Decide What to Eat Feb 23, 2021
    Show notes

    Ah, the big question!
    What should I eat?

No doubt you’ve asked yourself this question many, many times.
Possibly hoping for a magical answer. But you know I am always honest with you.
My friend, there is no magical answer.

In this coaching session, I will walk you through the process of deciding how to choose your food, as the intelligent, adult woman you are.

I know you want me, or someone, to tell you what to eat.
I know that would feel easier for you.
But you know and I know that it simply doesn’t work.
No one knows you and your body and your needs better than you.
Even though you may not believe me.

I know you probably think there is some list somewhere in the world, that has all the perfect foods for you, that will deliver amazingly fast weight loss.
This list will also tell you what foods to stay away from and if you follow this list, you will wake up thin and happy.

    Okay, back to real life.
You have within you the ability to figure out your food.
This is not rocket science, I promise.
You can use a few simple criteria to know how to say yes or no to any given food. After you decide if you are hungry, or course.

This is weight loss for the thinking woman.

Let’s take a look at why you’re resistant to choosing your own food and how you can overcome this roadblock.
And of course, I will help you.

Episode 210: How to Avoid The Perfect Storm of Overeating Feb 16, 2021
    Show notes

    Storm Ahead

Did you ever have one of those days when all the things that happened, and what you did, added up to you eating way more than you needed?

And did you ever have one of those days when all the things seemed to go right? And you easily created a great day of eating and self-care?

I like to call these days, both of them: perfect storm days. That means that all the things you experienced, thought about, felt and did added up to a result. Either a day you felt great about or a day you ended up regretting.

So you can have a day that is a perfect storm of overeating. OR you can have a day that is a perfect storm of doing great.

I know you’d love to string together a bunch of great days of helpful eating and great self-management. And I know that sometimes it feels like you have no control over how the days turn out.

Today we’re going to work on these things:
What leads to a day that is a perfect storm of overeating?
Is this something you have control over?
Can you create a day that is a perfect storm of peaceful and helpful eating?
How can you be more in charge of how your days turn out?

Join me in this coaching session where we take apart your typical great days and your typical not-so-great days and see what happened and why.

Remember, you are an intelligent, thinking woman, and this is weight loss for the thinking woman.

We dissect what is happening and figure out how to make it look more like the weight, the body and the life you wish you had.

This is something that is more than possible!
    Let’s do this together!

Episode 209: How To Tell If You Are Truly Hungry Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

If I followed you around for a few days (don’t worry, I won’t!) what would I see?
Would I see you grazing all day?
Would I see you sit down to eat periodically, and watch you ask yourself if you were hungry?
Or would you go to food just because it was time?
    Or because others were eating?
Or because someone offered you food?

A few years back, my eating had nothing to do with my hunger.
I ate for all sorts of reasons, and hardly any of it had to do with hunger.
    And my weight reflected that.

I also was obsessed with losing weight.
And I couldn’t put two + two together to understand why losing my extra weight was so hard.
I thought it was all about WHAT I was eating.
I didn’t pay attention to all those times I ate without hunger.

If you struggle with your weight, the very first thing we need to work on is you learning what it feels like to be hungry, to be full, and then to eat according to those two signals.

Not when the food looks yummy.
    Not when it’s lunchtime.
And not when you are anxious, nervous or worried.

No. Just when you are hungry.
That is how natural eaters eat.
Join me in this coaching session today and I will help you recognize what real hunger feels like.
    What emotional hunger feels like.
And how to tell the difference.

Episode 208: Does Thin Equal Happy? Feb 02, 2021
    Show notes

    Pop quiz:
How often have you said these things to yourself?
When I weigh ___, then I’ll be happy.
When I lose ___ pounds, then my relationship will be better.
When my weight gets to this lower point, then I can work on other things.

If you recognize these thoughts, you are in for a challenge today.
You are in a common habit of thinking that your happiness hinges on your weight.

I know we live in a culture where thin is worshipped.
Although I must say that it’s getting better.
And even if you don’t worship thin, you still want to lose weight so you can be a natural eater and lose the drama around food and your weight.

All this is good. But what isn’t so good is you connecting happiness with a number. Because if you believe you can’t be happy until you achieve the magic number, then you are doomed.

It’s like you are telling yourself that you must be miserable until someday in the future when you get to that number.

Think about how that makes you feel.
    Awful in the present, right?
And does feeling awful about yourself right now help you lose weight?
    Let me think?

    No.
    It does not.
I have never worked with a woman who successfully learned how to be a natural eater who hated herself all along the journey.

So I hope you open your mind today to the idea that you do not have to hate where you are to change where you are.
You can be more accepting of where you are and yes, still get to your goal. And I can promise that the journey will feel a whole lot better.

Episode 207: A Good Eating Day Starts the Night Before Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

Are you a planner, or do you live and eat spontaneously?
Most of us identify as one or the other.
You might think that you simply don’t have the personality to be a planner, and if it doesn’t come naturally to you, that you weren’t meant to do it.

But I want to talk to you today, and yes, I want to convince you, that planning ahead for yourself is the way to help you change, to help you keep your promises to yourself, and to help you eat differently.

When you make decisions in the moment, 99% of the time, they will be decisions to do the same things you have always done. And this certainly includes how you eat.

When you pre-think a situation, you are giving your brain a plan. You are telling yourself: when this happens, I want to do ____.

So if you are trying to eat differently, and stick to a plan, you need to think through what it will feel like in the moment and how you will handle it.

If planning ahead makes so much sense and helps you get what you really want, why aren’t you doing it?

It might be that you just think it’s too hard.
Or that it’s boring to plan.
Or that if you plan you might miss out on something wonderful.
OR you might be rebelling against being told what to do. Even if you are being told by you! For something you really want!

It is time to step back and see what lack of planning costs you, why it really works and how to do it.

Join me as I coach you about thinking things through ahead of time and how to get yourself to stop rejecting what really works. You can do this, even if you think you’re not a planner.

Episode 206: It’s Okay to Feel Low Right Now AND Not Overeat Jan 19, 2021
    Show notes

What do you do when you wake up and feel low?
    Or anxious?
    Or worried about things?

If you’ve been listening to me for a while, and you know how your mind works, you might be tempted to think: what can I think to feel better?

You might struggle to think positively so that you don’t overeat.
If you’re an emotional eater, you know how strong this habit can be.

But what if you could have a down day, or a ‘blah’ day, like I sometimes do, and don’t feel compelled to fix it?

You could just accept that ups and downs and in-betweens are all just part of the whole picture of you.
And when you are feeling blah, there is no need to fix anything.

When you don’t like how you feel, you might assume that you need to do something to feel better.
    And, do it quickly!

But it’s when you think you ‘shouldn’t’ feel low that you then add to the original low feeling. You might be resisting feeling all the natural emotions, and this leads you to want to run to the escape hatch…quickly!

What’s one of the fastest ways away from a painful emotion?
    Food.
Whether you are hungry or not.

So, join me today as we explore what you might do with challenging emotions. It’s a skill worth learning.

Episode 205: How to Accept Failure Gracefully and Restart Your Weight Loss Journey Without the Drama Jan 12, 2021
    Show notes

I want you to think back to the last time you set a goal and you failed.
No, I’m not trying to make you feel bad about how you are doing with your eating and your weight.

I want to help you see exactly what keeps you stuck.

Here’s the big point of this coaching session:
When you have a habit, even if you hate the habit, it’s always easier to do it than to do something new.
When you fail at doing a new thing, this is absolutely part of the process of change.
If you think you can escape without failing and be the exception…. I’m sorry my dear. But you are kidding yourself.

Okay, so this is probably not what you want to hear.
    I get it.
But now that you’ve heard the fact about failure as a requirement for change, now we can move onto making those hard things easier.

In this coaching session, you and I are going to look at why you fail at doing what you want most.

And how the way you look at it will either keep setting you back at the starting line, or help you get up, learn, brush yourself off, and move toward the new version of you.

So, let’s look at the steps you’ll need to take to fail forward.
Yes, to fail and actually move ahead at the same time.
    Without regrets.
    Without hating yourself.
    And without feeling bad. Promise.

    Are you ready?

Episode 204: Want Weight Loss? Give Yourself a Dose of Belief! Jan 05, 2021
    Show notes

    I know, I know.
You want to lose weight and you want the formula.
Just tell me what to eat, right?
Just give me that magical list of the good foods and the bad foods and I’ll do my best.

If you have thought these things before, you know that they are not enough.
Because as soon as you begin your weight loss journey, you will bump into something hard.
    Something new.
And you will fall down and experience a ‘fail’.

If you don’t have a firm belief that you can do this, no matter what, then you won’t get back up again.
At least not for a while.

Without the belief that you can do this even when it’s challenging, you will struggle all the way.
And it’s likely that you won’t get too far.

But, you ask me, how can I believe in myself if I’ve never done this before?
I have proof over and over again that I can’t do this?
How can I believe that I can?

    I hear you.
    I understand.
And creating that belief is exactly what I am going to help you with today.

We are working together to look at your old habits and dump the ones that are not working and add in some that will work.

That means that before you even start, you need to look at your belief in yourself.
Your belief in your ability to change.
No matter how many times you’ve tried and failed in the past.
This is KEY to changing for good.
And that is what we will work on together in this coaching session.
    See you inside!

    Episode 203 – My Top 3 Weight Loss Concepts from 2020 Dec 29, 2020
    Show notes

Weight loss and eating struggles are complicated.
There are so many moving parts. So many things to consider.
    Where to start?

Today, I’ve gathered up three of my top weight loss concepts from this past year, for you, my dear listener.
I know, if you listen to me regularly, that these coaching sessions give you a lot to take in.
You listen, and each week there is something new to focus on.

    So let’s simplify things.
Here are just 3 things I want you to think about AND take action on.
You can do three things, for sure.
    Here we go!

Concept #1 = You need to learn how to hold yourself accountable when you overeat without punishing yourself and without overcompensating for what you ate.

Episode 171: Hold Yourself Accountable for What You Eat

Is it good that you are not beating yourself up about a slip? Yes, of course. Beating yourself up serves zero purpose. But I don’t want you to move on from the slip until you pause and ask what you’ve learned.
I also want to make sure you don’t starve yourself to make up for what you’ve overeaten.

    Got it?

Concept #2 = You need to stop stopping.

Episode 173: Stop Stopping to Get What You Want!

You need to know that when you have a fail, which you will when you learn something new, you need to fail forward and move on. Not stop, say: what the hell! And then wake up a month later.
No. You need to fail, do the right thing, and keep moving.
You lose steam when you stop and take a break because you disappointed yourself.

    Stop stopping.

Concept #3 = Stop thinking there is shame in asking for help. You think: I SHOULD be able to figure this out for myself.

Episode 189: I Should be Able to Figure This Out on My Own!

    Yet, you can’t.
You can argue with reality or get help and get what you want.
Does this sound like the smarter option? To me it does.

Okay, join me in this coaching session and take these three simple ideas into the new year with you.
    You CAN do this.
    And I can help.
