How I set up my own conference network /w Yota Trom Jun 25, 2020
    Show notes

I have always had this fantasy - ok it’s more than a fantasy - to start my own conference - you know to have dozens, a hundred or even hundreds of people who are at my conference and have paid to be there.

I have been a speaker at several conferences and I am certainly interested in being a speaker at more conferences.

What about you? Is this something you would like? Is it a goal? An ambition? What would that do for your business?

What about making you money? Very few of the conferences I have attended are started on the basis of making the organiser some money. If they do, it’s a nice bonus. As long as they cover costs, that’s the main financial consideration.

But here’s what starting your own conference network will do:

    1. At the very least it’s going to raise your profile
    2. It’s going to change how other people see you
    3. It’s going to allow you to connect with amazing people

Today’s guest Yota Trom is going to share with you how she came to start her own network step-by-step, the success she has seen to date and where’s she’s taking it next. Big plans!

How I built a global coaching brand /w Michael Bungay Stanier Jun 18, 2020
    Show notes

The Coaching Habit is a book I read recently. I have read it several times. It’s not a complex book - which is good news when you want a book intended to help practicioners.

It is a simple book. It is a powerful book. It gives you an understanding of how you can use coaching questions to get more from yourself and your team. For that reason, it has gone down a storm with companies who want their managers to adopt a coaching style of leadership.

But….more importantly is the story of the man behind the book and the man behind the training business

Today’s guest is Michael Bungay Stanier who started Box of Crayons his training business completely on his own in Ontario in 2002 and has since built it to an international success story

He has a team of facilitators running his programs worldwide on his behalf for clients like CitiBank, HBO, Nestlé, Yahoo, American Express.

So how did he do it? That’s what today is all about.

How I use horses to run leadership workshops w/ Jude Jennnison Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

Leadership training with horses, seriously? Just when you think you have heard everything there is to know about the training business, you realise that there are people selling training programs and learning experiences in environments and in ways that you had not realised were possible.

I had never thought of leadership as something which can be delivered through interaction with animals. For many people, animals tend to invoke irrational fear. Yet for others, working with these gentle, silent beings brings out feelings and confidence that does not emerge readily from working with humans alone.

I know of two training businesses that deliver leadership training through having their paid clients working with horses and it's my pleasure to have a guest on today's episode who is going to explain to you how she came to build a training business around leadership training with horses.

And because Jude is also a published author, you’re also going to learn how writing a book has attrracted new clients and increased her revenue dramatically.

How I handled being furloughed as an L&D Manager w/ Lorna Gamman May 28, 2020
    Show notes

Linkedin is chock-a-block full of people’s stories at the moment - not just the usual self-promotion and advertising - there are a lot of human-interest stories as people are publically coming to terms with being laid off or being furloughed - which is what happended to Lorna Gamman today’s guest

I can’t recall having heard that term before the COVID-19 pandemic, but that’s one of the things which has emerged from this situation, new language, new terminology but also new mindset, better mindset and a stronger mindset.

Lorna wrote a post on LinkedIn which took a glass-half-full perspective - that being furloughed actually is an opportunity to rethink what you are doing, why you are doing what you are doing and what you can and want do next. It is in many respects, an opportunity to reinvent yourself as a learning professional

The Future of Selling Your Training May 21, 2020
    Show notes

How are you doing this week? There are signs that restrictions have been lifted here. Shops are opening and some businesses are reopening although it's going to be to a very different world.

Some of the trainers I have been speaking to I doing okay, some are doing well and some are not doing so well.

Many trainers have no idea where money is going to come in the summer months because the summer months are sometimes dry months and they're dreading September particularly if there are no on-site training programs.

Everyone is scrambling to produce programs and deliver programs online, but as I explained last week or the week before, I think that many programs are not transferable to an online environment.

We may have to deliver training online for the forseeable future. That is one challenge in itself.

But, we need to learn how to sell our training online as well. That is going to be a massive challenge for some and a massive opportunity for others.

Are you ready for the future of selling your training programs online?

    How do I succeed as a trainer in a V-U-C-A world? May 14, 2020
    Show notes

Following an online networking group with other trainers last week, I realise that the one constant in this sea of variables, is that actually no one really knows what next quarter looks like. We are slap bang in a VUCA environment.

    What does VUCA mean?

I have delivered training programs for the military before and one term which has been mentioned several times in conversations with military learning and development consultants is the term ‘VUCA’ which stands for Volatile. Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous.

So that's what today is all about. What to do when the training world is VUCA. I’ve got three ideas that will help your learning and development business survive.

This is Eps 87 of the TBC!

Right now - wherever you are listening to this - at home, in bed, on the commute to work (if you're still working) or perhaps you're sitting out in the garden if you're lucky to have one, things are economically, financially and personally tough! You don't need me to tell you that your learning and development business is not where you thought it would be this time last year. A good deal of my coaching and training work has been cancelled or postponed. Is that true for you? I hope not. But if our clients don’t need us right now, that is not to say that they won’t again soon. Your clients will need you again! Good times or bad times, we need to keep on keeping on and use the power of habit to get into the habit of doing things that focus your mind and keep you busy marketing and selling your training and development services when everything around you is up in the air. Today I'm going to give you five pretty straightforward habits to keep you focused, keep you on your toes and doing the things which will strengthen your business mindset. Best wishes, Mark
