Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism, and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100 Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

Lisa interviews author and science journalist Marta Zaraska.

Description of her book, "Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism, and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100."

A smart, research-driven case for why optimism, kindness, and strong social networks will help us live to 100.

From the day her daughter was born, science journalist Marta Zaraska fretted about what she and her family were eating. She fasted, considered adopting the keto diet, and ran a half-marathon. She bought goji berries and chia seeds and ate organic food.

But then her research brought her to read countless scientific papers and to interview dozens of experts in various fields of study, including molecular biochemistry, epidemiology and neuroscience. What Marta discovered shattered her long-held beliefs about aging and longevity. A strong support network of family and friends, she learned, lowers mortality risk by about 45 percent, while exercise only lowers it by about 23 percent. Volunteering your free time lowers it by 22 percent or so, while certain health fads like turmeric haven't been shown to help at all. These revelations led Marta Zaraska to a simple conclusion: In addition to healthy nutrition and physical activity, deepening friendships, practicing empathy and contemplating your purpose in life can improve your lifespan.

Through eleven chapters that take her around the world, from catching wild mice in the woods of central England to flower arranging with octogenarians in Japan, from laboratories to "hugging centres," Marta embarks on an absorbing, entertaining and insightful journey to determine the habits that will have the greatest impact on our longevity.

Deeply researched and expertly reported, Growing Young will dramatically change the way you seek a longer, happier life.

    Show notes

    Hi all!!

I wanted to share my brand new podcast!! "Active Allyship...it's more than a #hashtag!" It is a show I co-created and co-host with Sunni Days who you have probably heard on this show. She co-hosted 4 episodes of "Talk Healthy Today." Check them out if you missed them!

The murder of George Floyd was soul crushing & opened up many hearts and minds to the issues of systemic racism. You may be asking why I am sharing this here since this is a health show. Health SHOULD be for all. Fair for all. But the health disparities are huge and covid19 has disportionately affected black and brown communities.

I hope you will give my new show a listen and if you like it, subscribe. I would be so honored to have you here getting your health tips on "Talk Healthy Today" and learning about allyship and dismantling racism with me and Sunni Days on "Active Allyship...it's more than a #hashtag!"

    Thank you in advance.

    With health & love.

Smart Fat: Eat More Fat. Lose More Weight with Jonny Bowden, Ph.D/ Steven Masley, MD - Don't RUIN your good fats - heat points of cooking with fat and oils. Jul 02, 2020
    Show notes

Jonny Bowden, Ph.D talks about the book he did with Steven Masley, MD, "Smart Fat." After the interview with Dr. Bowden, Lisa interviews Dr Steven Masley about how not to ruin good fats and the heat points of cooking with fats and oils.

    Description of Good Fats:

The innovative guide that reveals how eating more fat—the smart kind—is the key to health, longevity, and permanent weight loss.

For years experts have told us that eating fat is bad. But by banning fat from our diets, we’ve deprived ourselves of considerable health benefits—and have actually sabotaged our own efforts to lose weight.

Though they originally came from vastly different schools of thought about diet and weight loss, renowned nutritionist Jonny Bowden and well-respected physician Steven Masley independently came to the same conclusion about why so many people continually fail to shed pounds and get healthy. It all comes back to a distinction far more important than calories vs. carbs or paleo vs. plant-based: smart fat vs. dumb fat.

In Smart Fat, they explain the amazing properties of healthy fat, including its ability to balance hormones for increased energy and appetite control, and its incredible anti-inflammatory benefits. The solution for slimming down—and keeping the pounds off for life—is to “smart-fat” your meals, incorporating smart fats with fiber, protein, and most importantly, flavor. Bowden and Masley identify smart fats, explain what not to eat, and provide a thirty-day meal plan and fifty recipes based on the magic formula of fat, fiber, protein, and flavor.

It’s time to unlearn what we think we know about food. Getting smart about fat—and everything you eat—and learning to smart-fat your meals is the only solution you'll ever need.

Lisa is joined by cookbook author Missy Chase Lapine to talk about her book, "Sneaky Blends: Supercharge Your Health with More Than 100 Recipes Using the Power of Purees."

Lisa's new co-host Sunni Dayz will be back on Thursday!

    Here is the book description:

The New York Times bestselling author of The Sneaky Chef brings us the next trend in healthy eating with delicious and easy recipes whipped up with nutrient-dense purees to create leaner, cleaner yet ridiculously tasty meals.

BLEND (blend) NOUN: a combination of different tastes made from superfoods, like blueberries, kale, and broccoli that are packed with disease fighting phytonutrients, fiber, and low in calories.

When the New York Times bestselling Sneaky Chef took off, Missy Chase Lapine knew parents were finally getting their kids to eat healthy with hidden veggie purees (a.k.a. Blends). What surprised her, though, was that those same parents were using Blends in their own recipes and feeling more energized. Taking her cue from those parents, Missy is on a mission with Sneaky Blends to show how anyone can eat healthy without sacrificing taste.

Starting off with fifteen signature Base Blends, such as Butternut Squash-Apple, Black Bean-Blueberry-Baby Kale, and Carrot-Sweet Potato, Missy shows you how these nutrient packed blends can kick start your healthy lifestyle. When these blends are added to your favorite recipes or one of Missy’s delicious recipes like Zucchini Pasta Piccata, Chai Tea Smoothie Bowl, Cheesy Kale-Basil Soufflé, Meaty Mushroom Bolognese, or 45-Calorie Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, they instantly become healthy. This is healthy eating without deprivation!

Missy also has created the Blends Cleanse™, a 3-day Body Reboot that you can tailor to your own lifestyle, giving you a diet do-over and setting you on the path to weight loss. Full of gorgeous color photos and tips and tricks to start blending, this is the only cookbook you will need to detox and transform your overall health while still enjoying delicious meals.
