How Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Can Help You & Your Teens with Strong Emotions. Aug 20, 2020
    Show notes

Lisa M. Schab, LCSW, joins Lisa to discuss dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), an offshoot of cognitive behavioral therapy that targets emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

A follow up to "Put Your Worries Here" -- the first journal in The Instant Help Guided Journals for Teens series -- "Put Your Feelings Here" focuses on reducing and managing debilitating emotions such as fear, frustration, stress, and sadness.

Unlike most journals designed for teens, Lisa M. Schab, LCSW, uses dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), an offshoot of cognitive behavioral therapy that targets emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

With prompts that guide teens to finding fragrances they love, planning the ultimate party, and giving loved ones advice, teens will learn to stay calm, reduce intense emotions, and enter a state of mindfulness that they can use well beyond their teen years.

Listen as Schab joins Lisa to share more about DBT and how people of any age can use the technique to manage their feelings.

Living with an Invisible Illness with Jennifer Esposito Aug 17, 2020
    Show notes

Actress Jennifer Esposito knows firsthand the "invisible" aspect that makes celiac disease so difficult to deal with.

Almost daily she hears the phrase, "You don't look sick."

For those with celiac, it can become a constant struggle to get people to understand the pain that you're suffering silently. Just because they can't see it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

This is especially true if you don't have the "typical" symptoms of celiac. For years, Jennifer suffered from everything from sinus infections to digestive issues and panic attacks. She was labeled a hypochondriac and "dramatic," and doctors put her on medications like Prozac.

Even the supposed "experts" don't always listen, and it can kill your soul to go so unheard for so long... to know something is truly wrong but no one recognizes that's the case.

Jennifer has seen major resistance with the press in accepting that celiac is a serious disease, so just imagine what the normal, everyday person goes through.

What advice does Jennifer have for those suffering from celiac?

First, look your disease in the face, accept it and digest it. Accept your disease for what it is and move forward. Be clear and honest with yourself; it's a journey every day.

Once you accept this in yourself, you can look to those who support you.

Finally, understand those who can't understand; but also seek out those who will always be there for you.

Jennifer and Lisa discuss the invisible nature of celiac, as well as ways to cope with this painful and often debilitating disease.

Making sense of labels (USDA certified organic, grass-fed, Non-GMO, or free-range, & more!) Aug 13, 2020
    Show notes

When you're trying to shop "healthier" it can be overwhelming to understand what labels like USDA certified organic, grass-fed, Non-GMO, or free-range actually mean.

Can you really trust that these labels accurately reflect what they appear to claim? What about foods that use natural pesticides versus synthetic ones -- are they truly safe?

Lisa covers a selection of these labels, as well as the importance of paying close attention to the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists.

How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids Aug 11, 2020
    Show notes

FYI: THIS WAS TAPED BEFORE COVID19 or I would have asked her about parenting during this time.

You're not a bad parent if you sometimes yell. It happens. The key is not getting carried away or falling into a pattern of shouting at your kids.

When your kid is having a meltdown in the middle of the grocery store, or has disobeyed you for the fifth time that day, it can take everything in your will to keep yourself from having your own meltdown.

You're not a bad parent if you sometimes yell. It happens. The key is not getting carried away or falling into a pattern of shouting at your kids.

Carla Naumburg, PhD, author of How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids: A Guide to Becoming a Calmer, Happier Parent, found her own way to calm after realizing there had to be a better way.

In his episode, she joins Lisa to discuss the book, as well as offer these tips:

    • Know your triggers by understanding what sets you off.
    • Make buttons as push-proof as possible by getting enough sleep, single-tasking, accepting support, and not beating yourself up.
    • Do literally anything else when on the brink of explosion. It could be the classic three deep breaths, but it could also be playing a little air guitar -- anything that redirects.

Beyond Recycling - How to Make the World a Better & More Sustainable Place. Aug 06, 2020
    Show notes

Small steps lead to greater environmental change.

Sustainability and environmental concerns are impacted by the small choices you make in daily life.

Eco-evangelist Ashlee Piper urges for people to take a step beyond recycling. While recycling helps reduce overall waste, examining one’s daily garbage creation will make a bigger difference. Look at how much packaging you throw away in a day.

Transitioning to a plant-based diet is good for the health of the planet. If you aren’t ready to eliminate meat completely, reducing your weekly consumption helps.

For your fur baby, sustainable pet supplies are great. T-shirt strips braided into ropes make great toys. Consider second-hand supplies.

Get smart at the supermarket. Eat ugly produce. Bring your own bags. Shop bulk foods to avoid excessive packaging.

Listen as Ashlee joins Lisa to share tips on how to make the world a better, more sustainable place.

Be More Tree - How to feel more steady and grounded. Aug 04, 2020
    Show notes

Lisa is joined by Alice Peck, author of "Be More Tree."

Every tree tells a complete and ongoing story; from its powerful taproots to the birds that alight on its fragile high branches. Trees reflect our lives through their perseverance and seasonal rhythms; always changing yet consistent. They evolve along a much more protracted timetable than humans.

Like us, trees feel and react to their environment, and communicate with us in subtle but distinct ways.

Alice suggests exploring trees from four perspectives:

    1. Roots:wisdom and understanding
    2. Branches: symbols and rituals
    3. Leaves: healing and science
    4. Seeds: transformation and spirituality

All of these elements show us how, although they live outside us, trees offer a path to our inner selves.

From the Bodhi Tree to the Garden of Eden, the Druids to forest monks, medicines to tire swings, people have always received physical, psychological, and spiritual sustenance from trees.

Filled with insights from botany to poetry, ecology to mythology, and herbalism to sacraments, Be More Tree explores the ways these grounded yet soaring entities can steady and move us, teach and transform us, inspire and comfort us.

Finding Your Why - A huge step towards making your healthy living goals a reality! Jul 30, 2020
    Show notes

What is the real reason you want to change? A lot of people want to make healthy lifestyle changes. Some even start to make those changes, but then "fall off the wagon."

The key is uncovering what your "why" is. What is the real reason you want to change? It's not something that can necessarily be answered overnight; it requires peeling away all the layers and digging deep.

Once you do identify your why, actually making change takes practice -- weeks, maybe months. But, the end goal will be worth it if your desired change is truly your why.

Lisa discusses how to find your why, make healthy lifestyle changes, and meet (or even exceed) the goals you set out to achieve.
