The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Where in your body do you carry joy? Isn’t that a profoundly beautiful but maybe also difficult to answer question? But it’s an important one and one I want you to spend some time thinking about. To help us dig a little deeper into what Black joy is and why it’s important, this weel I’m joined by Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggets, the author of Black Joy: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration. Tracey and I chatted about how to get in touch with joy, why joy can sometimes be hard to access, the importance of Black joy, particularly when things are difficult, and she shares a beautiful excerpt from her book.

Are you looking for something new and insightful to add to your bookshelf? The Therapy for Black Girls Library has got you covered. Since so many of our community members love a good book, we'll be sharing interviews with the authors of some books we think you'll enjoy in these TBG Library episodes.

This week we’re reading Truth's Table: Black Women’s Musings on Life, Love, and Liberation. Truth’s Table is a collection of essays and stories documenting the lived theology and spirituality we need to hear in order to lean into a more freeing, loving, and liberating faith—from the hosts of the beloved Truth’s Table podcast. For this conversation I was joined by co-authors Dr. Christina Edmondson and Ms. Ekemini Uwan. We chatted about the creation story behind the book, how they managed the vulnerability required to write, their expansive ideas about faith and sprituality, and how they want this book to impact readers.

Session 256: Black Women In Competitive Sports Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

In the world of competitive sports, an athlete’s mentality can be their best or worst friend. While we may perceive the athletes in our lives, or on our screens, as superhuman, it’s important to remember that they are more human than super. As athletes like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles take public steps to address and protect their mental health, it’s imperative that we continue to create a space for athletes to feel seen and heard. This week I’m joined by Olympic, World, and US National Champion Track and Field Sprinter Natasha Hastings. During our conversation we explored the types of pressures competitive athletes are up against and how coaches and family members can aid the athletes in their lives to suit up not just for their sport but also for their mental health.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

So much of our adult lives are impacted by our work. For some, it can determine where we live, where our children go to school, and even what times we eat dinner. Additionally, the quality of our lives depends largely on who we work with, which is why our work experiences should be improving our lives and not dampening them. In this week’s session, I speak with one of my former professors, Dr. Kecia M. Thomas, Dean, professor, and expert in the psychology of workplace diversity. Our conversation explores the complexities of color blindness in the workplace, overt and covert signs of workplace discrimination, and the critical research on diversity resistance in the workplace.

What is your version of happy? Sure, we don’t all have the same things in mind, but we do have something in mind when we think of personal happiness. Joining us this week to discuss how we work toward obtaining our vision of happiness is Rosetta Thurman, the Founder of Happy Black Woman. Rosetta and I chatted about how happiness is not about having stuff but instead about doing the stuff that you care the most about, how minimalism amplifies what we deem the most important, and how a minimalist approach to life can lead to us accomplishing dreams we’d never thought we’d see in this lifetime.
