For the young people in our lives, test-taking can evoke feelings of stress and anxiety. As their guardians, teachers, and loved ones, many of us wonder how we can aid them to push past test anxiety and excel in their academic pursuits? Joining me for this conversation is Diane Placide, LPC, NCC, M.Ed. During our conversation we discussed what test anxiety is and what it might look like in a learning environment, how we can prepare our students to feel confident in a classroom or test taking setting, and what resources are available for youth dealing with test anxiety.

Session 250: The Dynamics of Black Women Working With Black Women Therapists Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

If you’ve been contemplating working with a therapist, you may have found yourself wondering if working with another Black woman is the best choice for you. There are many many reasons why this is a great choice but there is also a level of vulnerability in working with another sister that catches many by surprise. In this week’s episode I’m joined again by my friends and colleagues Dr. Joy Beckwith and Dr. Ayanna Abrams, both psychologists in Atlanta, to dig a little deeper into the dynamic that can occur when Black women work with Black women therapists. We discussed some of the joys and challenges of working with Black women therapists, we shared some of our own experiences of working with Black women therapists, and discussed how you can advocate for yourself to ensure you’re getting what you need out of therapy.

Session 249: What's Missing From the Conversation About Black Women & Suicide Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

There are multiple layers to unpack when discussing Black women and girls who die by suicide. Historically much of the research conducted around suicide has been synonymous with whiteness, although Black women harming themselves is not a new phenomenon. As death by suicide has continued to rise among Black women and girls in recent years, pointed research in this area is still sorely lacking. This week we're joined by Dr. Jeannette Wade and Dr. Michelle Vance, Assistant Professors at North Carolina A&T State University, whose work centers suicide research & intervention among Black women and girls. In this conversation, we explored psychological stressors like sexism and racism that can lead to suicidal ideation, how research efforts conducted by and for Black women can save lives, and the importance of humanizing Black women with mental health issues.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

If you’ve been listening to the podcast a while, you know that when we find shows we love, we try to bring them to the podcast so we can chat about the characters, captivating plot lines, and of course any mental health implications that stand out. In this week's session we’re chatting about Peacock’s new seriesBel-Air. For this conversation I’m joined by our Associate Producer, Ellice Ellis and Senior Producer, Fredia Lucas.

During our conversation, we explored what we’re loving about the new series, what we notice makes Bel-Air a fresh take on a nostalgic classic, some of the mental health concerns impacting the characters, and of course our predictions for the season. If you haven’t had the time to watch Bel-Air you may want to put this episode on pause and save it until you are caught up because there are definitely spoilers in this episode.

Session 247: Improving Communication Skills Feb 16, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

It’s safe to say that many of us value being heard and understood. In order for that to happen, we must utilize effective communication skills. But, what does that look like? How do we know when we’re doing a good job communicating our point of view or listening to someone else’s? Joining me this week to dig more into this topic is Morgan R. Graves. Morgan and I chatted about the characteristics of good communication, avoiding poor communication habits, and understanding the different communication styles that exist.

Session 246: Managing Creator Burnout Feb 09, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Whether you’re working as a full-time creative or balancing your entrepreneurial goals with your 9-5, the creator economy seemingly never stops. The consistent pressure to create and publish something new can tax our mental health, lead to exhaustion, and ultimately result in creator burnout. Joining us this week to chat about managing it all is the host of the For Colored Nerds podcast, Brittany Luse. Brittany and I explored how to identify burnout as a creator, setting boundaries online, and how therapy has assisted her mental health journey as a full-time creative.
