Whether you’re watching your favorite series on your phone, computer, or TV - the shows that we’ve grown to binge watch and/or critique were created by teams of people invested in the power of storytelling. Whether it’s a Youtube based comedy series or an HBO original, the tales told on our screens allow us to live vicariously through characters that remind us of ourselves, the people we love, and even the people we don’t want to be like. But, who are the people behind these characters? Who are the talented individuals who translate stories to reality?

In this week’s session, I'm joined by industry powerhouse and triple threat Writer, Director, and Showrunner, Amy Aniobi. Amy is one of the incredible Black women behind iconic shows like Hoorae Media’s Awkward Black Girl, HBO’s 2 Dope Queens, and HBO’s Insecure. Our conversation explores the characteristics of working in film and television as a Black woman and the necessity of mentorship in the industry.

Session 272: Navigating Academia As A Black Woman Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Over the years, there have been many public conversations around academic institutions failing to adequately support Black women, leaving many brilliant sisters feeling burned out, discouraged, and undervalued. At the same time, the desire for Black women to pursue higher education and secure tenure roles at Universities still exists, and rightfully so. Black women deserve a seat in higher education just like everyone else. The question is, for those who want to pursue higher education, what should they know beforehand?

Joining me this week to discuss Black women navigating the academic arena are Professor Helen A. Neville, an Educational Psychology and African American Studies professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Dr. Della V. Mosley, co-founder of Academics for Black Survival and Wellness. In our conversation, we break down the difficulties Black women face while pursuing tenure track positions in academia, what Black women should consider in their assessment of whether to get into academia, and what other pathways exist to pursue higher education.

Session 271: Being Mindful About How We Use Mental Health Terminology Aug 17, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Over the past few years, you’ve probably found yourself online viewing and reacting to bite size pieces of mental health information. At times in an attempt to better understand ourselves and the world we live in, we digest and share pieces of information that we don’t fully understand or properly reflect our experiences. Take for example the terms trauma bonding, gaslighting, and narcissism. All terms that you’ve probably heard before, and maybe even used in your everyday life. But, are you using them correctly?

Joining me today for another one of our Group Chat conversations are my friends and colleagues Dr. Ayana Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, both psychologists in Atlanta. During our conversation we break down the definition of key terms we’ve noticed people using online and share suggestions on how to be more mindful around information online.

Session 270: What You Need to Know About Enneagrams Aug 10, 2022
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

If you’re someone who enjoys taking personality tests you might have heard of enneagrams. If you’re not familiar, enneagrams are models of the human psyche that are based around nine intertwining personality archetypes. This week I’m joined by Chichi Agorom, a Certified Enneagram Teacher & Practitioner and the Author of The Enneagram for Black Liberation to chat all about it. During our conversation we chatted about the history of the enneagram, differentiating between the nine personality types, and how the enneagram can be used as a tool for black resistance and liberation.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

It can be hard to know where to start to get solid information about food and nutrition as so many sources share information that is incorrect and can be damaging to both our health and our relationship to food. Joining me this week to share their insights and expertise about all things food and nutrition are Registered Dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators Wendy Lopez and Jessica Jones. Wendy and Jessica are also the hosts of the popular podcast Food Heaven. During our conversation they provided definitions to some important terms like intuitive eating and diet culture, we discussed the cultural nuances that impact our relationships to food, and we discussed how our relationship to food impacts our mental health.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

In recent years there’s been no shortage of documentaries, podcasts and articles about cults and the people who lead them. I’ve been very curious about the psychology behind cults and how members become part of them and wanted to talk with someone to help shed some light on how it tends to happen. Joining me this week is Dr. Ashley Tisdale, a Postdoctoral Fellow at American University researching the intersection of disability, race, and horror. Dr. Ash is also the author of Cult Community, a newsletter for cult fanatics. The relationship we have with our therapists is unlike any other we have in our lives. They typically know lots about us while we usually only know a little about them. This is designed so that our emotional safety and needs are prioritized in the space but it can also lead to lots of questions that sometimes go unanswered. Joining me today for another one of our group chat conversations are my friends and colleagues Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, both psychologists in Atlanta, to answer some of the questions you might have about your therapist that you didn’t want to ask.
