    Show notes

Are you struggling to raise emotionally healthy, resilient adolescents in this fast-paced, ever-changing world? America has an epidemic of mental health disorders in adolescents that has made parenting even more challenging, but parents can still have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of their children. In her new book, Chicken Little: The Sky Isn't Falling, Erica Komisar offers parents the tools they need to navigate this tumultuous time of change and create a continuous deep connection with their children. Erica is a psychoanalyst and parent guidance expert who has been in private practice in New York City for over 30 years. She's also the author of Being There: Why Prioritizing Motherhood in the First Three Years Matters. 7:00 Teenagers still need their parents' guidance, even though teens tend to push their parents away 8:40 Covid exacerbated mental health issues and distress in younger people 11:30 There's a tremendous amount of sacrifice involved if you're going to raise and care for children well 13:40 We have placed more emphasis on money and career success than on caring for children 16:30 The best way to help quell the mental health crisis in children and adolescents is to prevent it from developing 19:00 Our society is achievement focused, rather than focused on emotional health, etc. 19:30 We “check out” of our children’s lives and simultaneously expect them to achieve more 20:00 Poverty can cause depression and so can affluence—in the same way. 22:00 Erica talks about her new book, Chicken Little. 23:00 At its root, anxiety is fear 24:00 The push for early independence is backfiring 24:30 The internet and social media has had a corrosive impact on the mental health of adolescence 27:30 Video games and tech additions are symptoms of anxiety and depression 31:40 Parents must be present during adolescence 34:00 You cannot protect your adolescent from pain and frustration, but it is a parents job to help them process it 35:00 Too many choices cause problems 38:35 We help shape our children’s identity over time. Parenting is also about helping your children take things OFF their plate. 41:00 Women/Girls get the message about having to “be something” more than boys/men 42:00 - PARENTS MATTER! Show notes

    IN THIS EPISODE:

4:40 What do most women end up doing in their lives?

5:00 More women graduate from law school than men, but most women end up dropping out way before obtaining partner status which is untrue for men

5:30 In order to get women to the top (which is what feminists want), you have to be able to sacrifice your home life and family

7:00 Parents, stop holding up big careers and money to your kids as something they have to aspire to! 9:30 Women are suffering trying to fit into the box the culture wants them to be in

    114. Kacey Musgrave's New 'Breadwinner' Song Sep 19, 2021
    Show notes

Suzanne discusses singer/songwriter Kacey Musgraves's new song, 'Breadwinner,' which blames men for what happens when wives earn more.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

3:50 Suzanne introduces the new song by Kacey Musgraves's 'Breadwinner'

7:25 Many women and men don't understand how the female breadwinner issue will affect their marriages

8:50 60% of Suzanne’s coaching clients are in a situation where the women earn more

10:05 Men AND women don't like when women earn more

11:30 The cultural narrative blames gender "stereotypes” and gender "expectations”

13:15 A man’s ability to earn is inextricably tied to his identity.

13:50 Women do not work out of a desire to provide for their husbands

14:50 When a woman has an all-consuming career, much like Musgraves', her relationships (and children if she has them) take a back seat

19:40 As long as the woman is earning, the man’s motivation will fall away

20:10 Men don’t get threatened by a woman earning more; it simply deflates them. Men and women are motivated by different things

21:40 The male breadwinner norm won’t change because women want men who earn the same as they do or more

22:00 This song resonates for women today because so many women are out-earning their partners

    111. 4 Lies the Culture Tells Women Aug 31, 2021
    Show notes

Suzanne discusses the fallout of the four lies our culture tells women, which represent Part One of Suzanne's new book, How to Get Hitched (and Stay Hitched): A 12-Step Program for Marriage-Minded Women.

    1:40 The Four Lies:

    - Marriage + Motherhood = Jail

    - Women should never depend on a man

    - Sex is just sex

    - Career success will and should define them

1:50 The women who fell for these lies are now dealing with the fallout (They either can’t find a marriageable man or they do find one and are unable to have children the natural way or stay home with their children)

2:30 Feminists want women in the workforce so they can push their political agenda of government sponsored day care and paid leave. This is not what most women want!

3:10 The birth rate is the lowest it has been in a century

4:30 There's so much more than money when it comes to mapping out a life that works

5:30 Follow the man’s career path because he is going to end up feeding the family, if only temporarily

6:00 Stop moving through the world like your body and life will be the same as a man’s

7:10 Put marriage and motherhood at the center of your life and build everything else around that

7:50 Marriage doesn’t change things as much as having a baby does

8:30 Women do not become more “eligible” with age

9:00 Plan ahead, and be flexible!
