    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

Debt, Tattoos, and Sex… Oh My! (a heart to heart with Christy and Kailee Montes)Let me start off by saying that I don’t think I have all the answers about life. I know I say that all the time, but I want you to hear my heart on this one. Life is a journey, it is tough, it is full of twists and turns you don’t expect. I have messed up so much on this journey and I am so very grateful for grace. Without it, I wouldn’t be here. God is full of grace. If you have messed up, you are not alone. God uses messed up people. Jesus hung out with messed up people. We are called to live out our faith by loving as Jesus loved; by modeling kindness and gentleness.

Christy and Kailee pulling off an adorable selfie.

When Kailee Montes messaged me on FB and asked me to read the this blog post, I did just that. She asked me if I would record my reaction on a podcast. I thought it would be better if she came over and recorded a podcast with me. As a twenty-two-year-old homeschool graduate, she has experienced the pressures of today and had a lot to say about this blog post. I hope you will take a listen and let us know your thoughts. Our goal is not to bash the lady who wrote it, but to speak out on behalf of the girls and women who may be full of shame and guilt and encourage them on this journey of life.

    Genuine Hospitality Jul 29, 2018
    Show notes

As many of you know, I am getting ready to host some lovely women in my home next weekend. It is my goal that these ladies will feel at home from the moment they drive up. A recent FB post in our THGP- Playing Skillfully in Action group, got me thinking about genuine hospitality. What makes a good hostess? I thought I would share some of the things I do to make our home a welcoming place to others.

Genuine Hospitality - Click to Read the Things I do to make our home a welcoming place to others.

    1. Know your guests. Do they have any food/environmental allergies? Do they feel anxious about traveling? Do they have trouble climbing stairs?
    2. Prepare the space (fresh sheets, water by the bed, flowers, travel size toiletries).
    3. Have snacks easily accessible. Most people don’t feel comfortable asking for a snack

**Funny story about my snack basket pictured above. Recently, a friend’s son asked his mom why I was so mean. When asked for an explanation, he said only a mean mom would make their kids pay for snacks. I guess he didn’t get my joke. ☺

    4. Have a fan/diffuser in the room.
    5. If your guests are staying in a kid’s room, make sure the bed/nightstand is cleared of the stuff that can collect in those places (stuffed animals, treasures, etc.).
    6. Most importantly, have a welcoming attitude. You can have all the right things and have guests not feel comfortable or you can have a house that is a wreck, an empty fridge, and have guests that can’t wait to come back. So much of genuine hospitality is the attitude of the hostess.

I think this post sums it up! Thanks, Erica for allowing me to share!

Can I say an encouraging word about hospitality here?
I’m not sure if this would be considered an inappropriate post, as it is not really curriculum related so feel free to delete.

But I just really wanted to share a recent experience I had because, lets be honest here, we’re all moms and I think we all struggle with thinking our homes/ourselves are not “good enough” at times. Especially when we have preschoolers and are trying to “say yes” more!

My husband’s father remarried a woman from Mexico. This weekend we spent time at her brother and sister in laws house. The house was small, crowded and cluttered. Don’t get me wrong, it was clean, but nothing like what most of us would consider nice, or ready to entertain. There was nothing fancy about the food, just rice and beans in mismatched pots on the stove, random plates of veggies on the very crowded table (which was in the small kitchen with mismatched chairs all around), a grill full of food and mismatched plates and silverware that everyone had to search the cupboards for. The host herself spoke broken English and was slightly awkward and very shy. She didn’t serve us and didn’t bustle around making sure everything was perfect while we were there. She just sat and ate and tried her best to understand what we were saying and quietly washed dishes afterwards.

But I say all this to say, I have never felt so at ease, so welcome, so like family in a strange place. All of my mother in laws family from Mexico has a way of just treating you like family. They don’t prepare the house (other than bringing out all the chairs from every room). They don’t cook anything special. They don’t even set out plates or forks usually! But they are genuinely glad you are there, warm and friendly, and truly see everyone they invite into their home as family and welcome.

I wanted to share this because I often want to reach out but don’t feel my home (or my own social skills!) are good enough. I worry about my kids attitudes and messes. But maybe, we try too hard, and treat guests too different to make them feel at home. Maybe if we could just leave out the kids toys and let them be themselves (and let ourselves be ourselves!), and just welcome guests in as family, our homes would feel even more hospitable!

Who can you invite over this week?

Say YES and have a great week!!!

Thanks for listening. If you have topics you would like for me to discuss or people you would like to hear from, let me know. Just email me at kathy@thehomegrownpreschooler.com or shoot me a message on social media.

Mr. Rogers and Me Jul 13, 2018

A Closer Look at Mr. Rogers and his legacy with the Real Kathy Lee.If you know me, you know I love Mr. Rogers. As I was researching the history of Fred Rogers and his TV show, I realized that his show started about the same time my mom found out that she was expecting me. I guess you could say that I have been in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood from the very beginning.

Mr. Rogers had an impact on an entire generation. Once I took a closer look at what made this man a legacy, I knew I had to share my findings with you.

    1. LOVE was the root of Mr. Rogers work with children.

“Deep within us – no matter who we are- there lives a feeling of wanting to be lovable, of wanting to be the kind of person that others like to be with. And the greatest thing we can do is to let people know that they are loved and capable of loving”

    – Fred Rogers

    1. Mr. Rogers understood children.

    • He studied child development and the brain research behind his field.
    • He was willing to go out of the box to reach a child.
    • The child determined the approach.
    1. Mr. Rogers Knew Learning Involved Feelings.

What Do You Do with the Mad You Feel?

What do you do with the mad that you feel

When you feel so mad you could bite?

When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong…

And nothing you do seems very right?

What do you do? Do you punch a bag?

Do you pound some clay or some dough?

Do you round up friends for a game of tag?

Or see how fast you go?

It’s great to be able to stop

    When you’ve planned a thing that’s wrong,

And be able to do something else instead

    And think this song:

I can stop when I want to

    Can stop when I wish.

I can stop, stop, stop any time.

And what a good feeling to feel like this

And know that the feeling is really mine.

Know that there’s something deep inside

That helps us become what we can.

For a girl can be someday a woman

And a boy can be someday a man.

    1. Mr. Rogers chose his words carefully when talking to children. He understood that the way we talk to a child becomes their inner voice.

    5. Mr. Rogers made EVERY child feel Special.

    6. Mr. Rogers valued the WORK of PLAY.

The Damage of Disengaging Jul 08, 2018
    Show notes

Do any of you feel you disengage too often with your kids? If so, have you noticed a difference in your child’s behavior when you “check-out”? Listen to The Damage of Disengaging from The Real Kathy LeeJuly 4th is always a favorite holiday for our family. For the past few years, one of my dearest friends on the planet shows up for coffee, long talks, and sitting by the pool. I always try and record a podcast episode during Ash-a- lee’s visit and was so excited that we were able to chat early this morning about a subject that has been on my heart for a few weeks now.

During some recent outings, I have observed lots of little children that appear “starved” for attention. As I began watching closer, I realized that parents are disengaging with the children and it is happening on a regular basis.

Do any of you feel you disengage too often with your kids? If so, have you noticed a difference in your child’s behavior when you “check-out”? How can we be intentional about engagement so that we help our children become emotionally healthy adults? I get that we need to escape from the burdens of this parenting gig from time to time, but I worry that unless we make a commitment to intentionally engage, we are going to cause damage to our children’s hearts and soul.

Ashley and I suggested the following to help you on this engagement journey:

    1. Keep a basket of books close to the sofa and say YES to reading to your children.
    2. Set a time every day to check social media so that you are not looking on your phone all day long.
    3. Be present.
    4. Participate in family activities (the bowling story).
    5. Ask each child three, open-ended questions every day!

You won’t regret investing in your children’s emotional well -being. Investing when they are young, will pay off during those teen and early adult years.

Did I mention that she is a wife and mom to four pretty incredible children?

In this week’s podcast, Mandy shares her thoughts about finding time for yourself. Yes, we have talked about this before, but Mandy brings some fresh ideas to the subject. We had a lot of fun recording this episode and I know you are really going to enjoy listening. Don’t forget to check out Mandy’s website and follow her on Instagram. Foreign Language in a Day Jun 08, 2018

Foreign Languages in a Day with TalkBox.Mom and The Real Kathy Lee

Today was a fun one! While in Richmond, VA for the HEAV conference, I got the chance to chat with the founder of TALKBOX.MOM and learn more about her super cool business that helps families speak a new language the first day you put it into practice. If you are like me, the idea of teaching your kids a foreign language is intimidating. I always worry about saying the words wrong and I never can get the accent right. I was thankful when Adalaide shared that it is totally okay if words are mispronounced and accents are off. In fact, that is the very reason she includes authentic audio with every book. I LOVE THAT!

As a mom of two, Adalaide understands the importance of knowing other languages in today’s society. It was her opinion that it is never too early to start introducing a new language. With her lovely talk box cards, everyday phrases get reinforced easily throughout the day.

By the end of our time together, Adalaide had me convinced that I could actually learn Japanese before my trip next year. Additionally, I plan on getting a TALKBOX set in Spanish in order to support my son and daughter in law as they raise my grandbabies in a bilingual household. I think it is safe to say that I am a big fan of all that Adalaide is doing with TALKBOX.MOM.

Lastly, Adalaide offered a big discount to anyone listening to the show today!!! If you use the code HOMEGROWNPRESCHOOLER, you will save $40 off your subscription.

What’s The Deal With Ages and Stages? May 30, 2018
    Show notes

What's the deal with ages and stages in child development? Why are ages and stages important???

So that we can set developmentally appropriate expectations.

Developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) is an approach to teaching grounded in the research on how young children develop and learn and in what is known about effective early education. Its framework is designed to promote young children’s optimal learning and development.

Check out this presentation on Ages and Stages from Kathy Lee by clicking here!

The best way to teach children in a developmentally appropriate manner is through PLAY…

In short…PLAY builds the brain, develops the whole child, and contributes to children becoming who they were meant to be.

“Play is a vital way for the brain to integrate its divergent parts and build complex synaptic connections. This is key to brain stabilization, organization and development. “ – Stuart Brown, MD

“When children play, their brains are engaged in numerous pattern-seeking processes that construct, organize and synthesize knowledge.

    These processes Include:

    • Sorting
    • Ordering
    • Classifying
    • Counting
    • Patterning
    • Measuring
    • problem solving
    • organizing
    • comparing
    • describing
    • storytelling
    • Inventing
    • constructing
    • deciding
    • explaining
    • mapping
    • cooperating
    • experimenting
    • imagining
    • questioning
    • creating
    • symbol making

What is the role of a DAP Teacher/parent?

    • Observe
    • Facilitate
    • Encourage
    • Have realistic expectations
    • Focus on progression rather than perfection
    • Remember

“Childhood is the world of miracle and wonder, as if creation rose and bathed in light, out of darkness, utterly new and fresh and astonishing. The end of childhood is when things cease to astonish us. When the world seems familiar, when we have gotten used to existence, one has become an adult.” – E. Jonesco

“Every stage of development is complete in itself. The 3 year old is not an incomplete 5 year old. The child is not an incomplete adult. Never are we simply on our way, always we have arrived! Enjoy now!” – JC Pearce

    Mother’s Day Surprise May 12, 2018
    Show notes

Mother's Day Surprise! with The Real Kathy Lee Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and all of you moms listening!! This week I thought I would share some reminders from a talk I have been giving this summer at conferences across the country. At the end of this episode, I have a BIG surprise; you don’t want to miss it!

During my talk, “What Every Mother of Preschooler Needs to Know” I share the following:

    1. Your children will remember how you lived.

How do you spend your time? What are your passions? Will they remember that you were physically and emotionally present?

    1. Your children will remember how you loved.

How do you love? Do you show affection? Say I love you?

    1. Your children will remember what you loved.

What do you love? People? Things? Birds?

    1. Your children will remember whom you loved.

Do you love others? Do they see that? Do you love yourself? Do they see that? Hear that?

    1. Your children will grow up and will mother like you.

Someone once said, “The days are long but the years are short.” This is such a true statement. They grow up so incredibly fast and before we know it, we will witness them being moms and dads just like us. Yes, they will resemble you in so many ways. You are their model for what a mom looks like.

What’s the surprise, you ask? I have decided to add one more spot to my birthday celebration weekend. If you would like to be the final person chosen to attend, please like or follow me on Instagram @_therealkathylee or like my page FB @The Real Kathy Lee.
