    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

What REALLY Matters with with Keri Vasek Mar 29, 2019
    Show notes

Relationships… relationships matter. In this podcast, Keri and I unpack what this looks like and how to accomplish it in the middle of diaper changing and breaking up sibling fights. I know I have said it more than a thousand times, but I absolutely love meeting young moms and dads, encouraging them on their parenting journey. It has now been four years since I first met Keri at a conference in Fort Worth, TX. If you haven’t heard how we met, check out TRKL – Episode 2. A couple of weeks ago, Keri was in town for a DoTerra leadership convention and I got to sneak downtown to have lunch with her (yes, that’s Christy Montes in the picture, along with Keri’s mom and good friend, Kelly). This week Keri and I had an honest conversation about parenting in the early years and focusing on what really matters. If you are like so many other moms out there, you have had people tell you more than once that this stage of parenting flies by and most of the stuff that stresses us out simply does not matter. Well if it doesn’t matter, what DOES matter?

Relationships… relationships matter. In this episode, Keri and I unpack what this looks like and how to accomplish it in the middle of diaper changing and breaking up sibling fights. Grab a journal so you can jot down some ideas as we are talking. You know your children best and you know what they need to feel connected to you.

Some of my favorite ways to build connection are:

    Tell stories of your childhood.

Turn on music and dance and laugh and laugh some more.

    Cook together.

    Set the table together.

Put phones away and play age appropriate games.

Read aloud a favorite childhood book.

    Write a story together.

    Go on a hike.

    Have a picnic.

Make cookies for someone or your neighborhood or the nearest firestation.

    Hug. Really hug. No tapping.

Listen (even if they have already told you the story 100 times).

    Say yes.

I Didn’t Want This to be Part of My Story Mar 23, 2019
    Show notes

On this podcast, Kathy Lee shares the journey she has been going through with her son Joshua's battle with cancer. Some of you might be wondering why I took the past few months off from the podcast. I thought I would take the chance in my first podcast back to explain. A few days before Christmas, we thought our 19 year-old son, Joshua had the flu. He had a fever, vomiting and sore joints. Most of his symptoms improved throughout the Christmas holiday. However, on December 27th, he couldn’t grip his right hand and still had a low-grade fever. The pediatrician did some blood work and the next day asked us to take Joshua to the hospital. This is when we were told that he possibly had Leukemia. We were stunned. We were transported to the Bone Marrow Unit at Northside in Atlanta and honestly felt as if we were spinning in a nightmare for the next 24 hours. As nurses and doctors talked, I kept thinking… NO, I am not in this club. I don’t want to be in this club. Surely this is a mistake.

We now find ourselves in an all-consuming fight for his life. Joshua has a rare form of Leukemia (CRLF2 Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and has already endured two rounds of heavy chemo (30 days per round). We are now prepping for a stem cell transplant on April 12th and we are praying this will be the thing that helps him kick cancer’s butt!

Through all of this I am convinced more than ever that we do not focus on the right things as young mommas. We stress over potty training, temper tantrums, and messy kitchens. Those are stressful things indeed, but they really, really, really do not matter. What matters is that you invest in the heart of your child. You sit and read. You run around outside. You snuggle. You listen. You watch. You engage. You will need this relationship with your child as they grow and face tough times. They will need this relationship with you. You never know what your story will be. I definitely didn’t see this being part of my story and I never ever wanted it. However, this IS my story and I am thankful for the relationship I have with Joshua.

To follow Joshua’s journey, check out his Caring Bridge site or FB group.

Best of The Real Kathy Lee: Let’s Get Organized! Feb 08, 2019

Let's Get Organized! with The Real Kathy Lee

This week, the second top podcast episode of all time! Let’s Get Organized: Things don’t always work out as planned, but I have learned that it is usually for a good reason. Hoping that is the case with this week’s episode. I was scheduled to talk to my good friend, Mary Ann Kohl (author and process art expert). However, Mary Ann had to cancel so I called up my buddy ASH-A-LEE in Nashville. We decided to chat about one of the topics I get asked about THE MOST, organization.

People often think that because I am the queen of “say yes” and “get messy” that I have a very messy house. Not true. Well, it CAN get messy. However, I am best when my house is organized and everything has a place. Just this week, I tweaked the organization of my pantry. See below.

    kitchen organization

I shared some basic thoughts about organization on today’s episode.

    1. Find a place for everything and make that place known.
    2. Minimize your stuff. If you haven’t used it in a year, chances are you are not going to use it. This goes for clothes, shoes, toys, and kitchen utensils.
    3. Less is BEST. As parents we are guilty of thinking our kids need lots of different toys. False. Choose quality over quantity and rotate toys in and out.
    4. It is easier to say yes when everything has a place (ie – paint supplies, legos, etc…)
    5. Organizing children is easier in an organized space.
    6. Have children work together in order to free of individual time with each child. I love that Ashley sent me the following pics a few hours after our podcast. She immediately implemented some of my suggestions. Way to go Ashley!

Best of The Real Kathy Lee: You’ve Got This! When Motherhood is Hard Feb 02, 2019
    Show notes

You've Got This! When Motherhood is Hard with The Real Kathy LeeThis week we are running a few “Best of” episodes you might have missed! This is the #1 episode for my podcast! If you have listened to my podcast for very long, you have heard me say… You’ve Got This. You might have wondered what in the world I actually mean by that statement. Today’s podcast explains my thoughts as I share such an empowering phrase.

Motherhood is hard. We become parents through pregnancy or adoption, both are hard. Before the baby arrives we are often exhausted physically and emotionally. Next, we stay up all night and are expected to be happy and function the next day. What? How? By digging deep, by realizing that you are making a difference for eternity. It doesn’t mean that it isn’t challenging and very lonely at times.

I suggest the following for moms who struggle believing that they can pull off this thing called motherhood:

    1. Don’t be scared to ask for help – Reach out to a close friend and share your feelings.
    2. Say YES to taking time for yourself. You won’t regret it. You and your family will be happier for it.
    3. Say NO often. Motherhood can overwhelm us, especially when we take on too many things outside the home during the early years.
    4. It is okay to have your own tantrum from time to time. I suggest going in the closet for a good cry or toddler style fit. ☺
    5. Time flies. Try and lean in to these years, savor them. It sounds ridiculous, but you will miss the middle of the night feedings and early morning snuggles on the sofa.

YOU really, really do HAVE this!!

Teaching the Fruits of the Spirit to Little Ones Dec 23, 2018
    Show notes

I often suggest parents start with the Fruit of the Spirit when helping little ones understand God and His world. In this podcast, I share practical ways to teach your children.I often get asked how to handle spiritual training with little ones. I believe spiritual lessons should be like every other lesson at this age, taught in a concrete manner. I often suggest parents start with the Fruit of the Spirit when helping little ones understand God and His world. In this podcast, I share practical ways to teach the following lessons:

    Love

    Joy

    Peace

    Patience

    Kindness

    Goodness

    Faithfulness

    Gentleness

    Self-Control

As you have probably heard before, behavior is caught and taught. Your children will learn so much about the Fruits of the Spirit from watching YOU. Do you love others (I have an entire podcast on this subject)? Are you Joyful? Kind? Good? Faithful? Gentle? Patient? Self-Controlled? I know that I can work on these areas in my life. Each year I choose a WORD for the year. Maybe you choose a Fruit of the Spirit each year to focus on with your family. Being intentional about the Fruits of the Spirit could make a very big difference in the spiritual life of your family.

    Merry Christmas!

Are you a good guest? Dec 14, 2018
    Show notes

My friend Ashley and I had a great chat today about traveling with young kids and tips for being remembered as a good guest. Many of you will be traveling with young kids during the holidays. My friend, Ashley will be traveling too. She and I had a great chat today about traveling with young kids and tips for being remembered as a good guest.

    1. Make a phone call to the host family. Ask if you need to bring high chairs/portable cribs/ sleeping bags, etc. Also, ask if any special clothes will be needed for events happening during your visit.
    2. Pack some activities in Ziploc bags for the car ride and trip. Blocks, cars, animals, puzzles, books, crayons, stickers and paper work great!
    3. Discuss with your spouse who will put kids to bed each night so that each of you get some “adult” time on your trip.
    4. Ask for the tentative meal schedule and inform hostess of any scheduling conflicts your family has, so everyone can plan.
    5. Ask before doing. Ask about the house rules (no shoes on carpet, no eating in family room, etc…) and let your kids know these up front. Just because you have certain rules at your house doesn’t mean your host family will have the same rules.
    6. Keep your space picked up. Even if you don’t make your bed at home, it is good manners to make your bed, daily when visiting others.
    7. If children are disruptive, remove them from the situation. Very few children suddenly start behaving again after a big meltdown. Often this is due to lack of sleep and extra sugar during the holidays.
    8. Take your host a small token of appreciation (wine, candle, loaf of bread, etc…) and a handwritten note.
    9. Ask what needs to be done with dirty linens. It is standard etiquette to take sheets off bed, fold them and put them on the end of the bed and remake the bed. However, not every host wants that done. Asking is always best.

10.Leave things better than you found them. J

Visiting others does not have to be stressful. Preparation should make things easier on you and your host family.

When You Don’t Feel Like It Dec 01, 2018
    Show notes

How do you handle things, when you don’t feel well, or you are down? In this week’s episode, I suggested steps to take when you find yourself feeling low. After a two week break, I am back! To be honest, I wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t have a topic to talk about, I have been sick all week, and I have been a bit down in the dumps. So, staying true to myself, I decided to talk about that this week. How do you handle things, when you don’t feel well, or you are down?

In this week’s episode, I suggested one take the following steps when they find themselves feeling low:

    1. Give yourself permission to feel. You feel how you feel. Acknowledge it. Say it out loud. Ignoring or stuffing your feelings will never help you be an emotionally healthy individual.
    2. Get quiet. Grab a cup of coffee, your journal, and some background music. Sit and ponder your feelings.
    3. Ask yourself some honest questions. What is going on inside? What is the root? Is there trauma that has been triggered? Do you need to talk to someone?
    4. Share your thoughts with a safe person in your tribe. Hopefully your partner is number one on that list, but find someone safe and talk.
    5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We all need help. We all have things that we are dealing with. There are many great therapists that can help.
    6. Find something to be grateful for. Create a list.

Take some deep breaths and know that you are worthy of health and happiness.

    Have a great week!

Yep, two weeks until the Turkey, Dressing, and Pumpkin Pie. I decided to chat about the rapidly approaching holidays and some of the pitfalls that moms face this time of year.

Ashley Pomerory (formerly known as Ashley Smoot), my buddy from Nashville joined me today and asked some thought provoking questions about Thanksgiving and Christmas. First, Ashley wanted to know my thoughts on slowing down the Christmas Rush. Both of us have witnessed neighbors and friends skipping over Thanksgiving in order to get a jump on the Christmas decorations. I really want to encourage parents to slow it down when it comes to Christmas. Please take the time to be thankful with your family. Make a thankful jar, a thankful tree, or simply share why you are thankful over the holiday meal. Teaching children to be thankful is a tough task and this is a great time of year to put some family focus on this important lesson.

If you are not careful, Christmas can come in like a massive hurricane wrecking your life. You can over book and under plan, which will leave you completely exhausted come January 1st. I suggest making a list of priorities and traditions that are important to you during the holiday season. Don’t overcommit and definitely learn to say NO. Practice it now, N…. O…. NO! You can do it. It is a powerful word to use if you want to maintain your sanity this Christmas.

Leaving a Legacy – An Interview with Ashley Wiggers - This week’s podcast is such a sweet episode - grab your journal and tissues before you hit play. #podcast #homeschoolThis week’s podcast is such a sweet episode. However, you will definitely want to grab your journal and a box of tissues before you hit play. Five years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Debbie Strayer at the Southeast Homeschool Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We had just released our book, The Homegrown Preschooler and were excited to share it with the homeschooling community. Debbie, the co-founder of the magazine, Homeschooling Today was a speaker at the 2013 conference. As the conference was winding down, Debbie stopped by our booth and shared encouraging thoughts about our business and our book. I was so appreciative of the lovely words she shared with me that evening. I said goodbye to Debbie and watched her exit the vendor hall. On my drive home, I pondered my conversation with Debbie and looked forward to developing a friendship with her. Unfortunately, that would not be possible. The following morning, I was shocked to hear the tragic news that Debbie Strayer had passed away in her sleep.

A couple of years later, I met the lovely daughter of Debbie Strayer, Ashley Wiggers. Ashely and her husband chose to carry on her mom’s legacy by running the magazine and working with Geo Matters, the company that published her mom’s curriculum. We talk about all of this and so much more in today’s episode. Ashley shares stories of her mom and the lessons she learned growing up in a homeschooling family. I know you are going to want to take notes, so make sure you are ready to write as you listen to this one.

Last week, Kari Oakley Miller shared her story of loss and how it forced her to find a new plan for her family.Last week, Kari Oakley Miller shared her story of loss and how it forced her to find a new plan for her family. This week, Kari is back to share the rest of her story. After the death of her husband, Kari remained single for ten years. Fear of the unknown and concern for her five children kept her from even entertaining the idea of dating and remarrying. However, God had a different plan.

About five years ago, Kari was introduced to Andrew Miller, a widower with four children. As the relationship progressed, Kari was once again faced with the possibility of a new life plan. Instead of being a single parent of five kids, she was about to embark on a new journey, a blended family with nine children total. As you can imagine, this is a big decision. Not only will she have to adjust to married life and being a wife again, she will now have to figure out how to blend completely different families and lifestyles. I am so thankful for Kari’s willingness to be vulnerable and share the highs and lows of a new love and a new family. I know Kari’s honesty will move you to think about your own family, blended or not.

If you know someone who is considering blending families, please encourage them to take a listen to this podcast. As Kari and I say in the podcast, we hope that you never have to reconsider your original plan. However, if you do we hope you will remember the encouraging words here. God is faithful and He is for you.

    Hugs.
