    The Real Kathy Lee

    The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

    Confessions of a Fake Supermom with The Real Kathy LeeSooooo, how did you like that cover photo this week? Well, since we are confessing… that picture was taken when I was putting my house on the market. See the picture below… this is how my laundry room often looked! Yep, I am a fake. I can pretend I have it together by hosting a podcast, writing books, and traveling the country speaking to parents and educators.

    However, I don’t have it together at all. In this episode I share the following five reasons that I deserve to be called a FAKE supermom:

    1. I don’t cook meals for my family everyday.

    2. Sometimes I yell at my kids and freak out over stupid stuff.

    3. My house can get REALLY messy.

    4. Sometimes I wear work out clothes all day (even to the store) when I ZERO intentions of working out.

    5. I rely on a steady stream of coffee to answer the 1 + million questions I answer daily.

    No one is a perfect mom. We all have areas of mothering that we do very well (it is easy for me to say yes) and areas we struggle with (keeping up with the laundry). This is a journey that we are meant to enjoy, not lie about on social media. Let’s encourage one another and stop comparing!! NO ONE has it all together… NO ONE!

    Raising Artists without Losing Your Mind with Lesli Richards Apr 14, 2017
    Show notes

    IRaising Artists without Losing Your Mind with Lesli Richards and The Real Kathy Leen this episode, I invited Lesli Richards to join me to talk about the importance and beauty of including Art in your home without losing your mind. Lesli is the homeschooling mother of five and a former Classical Conversations director and tutor. In addition, Lesli is a dear friend and my business partner at The Homegrown Preschooler. Lesli stays busy schooling her blessings and traveling across the country sharing her passion for classical education and life long learning.

    Lesli shared three reasons she believes art is a must in every home. She suggests that art be displayed on your walls, your screensavers, and in your books. Lesli and I talk about the importance of process driven art instead of product driven art for young children under the age of six. This process-oriented art develops the structure of a child’s brain, releases endorphins, and encourages the child to take risk when creating art. Art for young children should be open ended and parents should not have an expected result (eyes in a certain place, looks like a picture, etc…). Parents should invite children to create with a variety of materials, leaving the results up to the child.

    Some of our favorite process art books for young children are written by Mary Ann Kohl and can be purchased here. We also recommend our book, The Homegrown Preschooler for sensory table and Plexiglas easel plans and our curriculum, A Year of Playing Skillfully for a year of planned out art ideas (and other developmental areas).

    We love buying quality art supplies for young children at Discount School Supply and Lakeshore Learning. We suggest you have the following in your supply closet, so that #saying yes is easier.

    1. Liquid Tempera
    2. Water Color
    3. Chalk Pastels
    4. Markers
    5. Crayons
    6. Colored Pencils

    8. Large Plain Paper
    9. Roll of Paper
    10. Quality Paint Brushes
    11. A variety of other painting tools (kitchen gadgets, dog toys, and even plungers make great painters. Qtips make great painters for toddlers.)
    12. Smocks or dad’s old work shirts
    13. Shower Liner or Picnic Tablecloth to protect spaces
    14. Paint cups
    15. Collage materials (feathers, shapes, large sequins, fabric squares, tissue paper, string)
    16. Scissors

    In last week’s episode I chatted with my dear friend and naturopath doctor, Christy Montes about transforming yourself from Last to First. If you missed it, DO NOT listen to this episode without going back and listening to that one first.

    If you have not taking care of yourself in the past, you have the power to change that. Take some time to evaluate your life, your past, and your health. Ask yourself some important questions:

    1. Do I have anything in my past that I need to address, any trauma or hurt?

    2. Do I love myself, why or why not?

    3. What is one thing I desire to see change or improve in my life?

    Don’t be afraid to acknowledge the amazing things about yourself and dare to change the things that have been keeping you down. You are worthy of love and belonging. You are perfectly imperfect and that should be celebrated. If you do not own a journal, I highly suggest you buy one today. You can read my story about journaling here. Seek out a good friend, therapist or pastor to help you on this journey of emotional self- awareness.

    In addition to being aware of your emotional health, Christy suggests everyone follow a balanced diet (80/20) and get sufficient rest.     On this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with my dear friend, Christy Montes. Christy is the homeschooling mother of four girls and works as a naturopath, serving others through her gift in the industry of natural medicine. Both Christy and I share our journey from legalism to grace and from putting ourselves last to caring for our own needs before others.

    Christy and I get honest in this episode, sharing our hearts for other moms who might be facing similar situations. Christy encourages moms to look in the mirror and name 10 things they like about themselves. As a journaling fan, I encourage moms to take it a step further by writing down affirmations and read them daily

    Both Christy and I have seen the benefit of looking in the mirror and seeing ourselves; our desires, our gifts, our longings and asking the Lord to continue to grow those areas during our motherhood season. We have found it much easier to give grace to other people who may have different convictions and preferences because we know how much grace we need on a daily basis. We continue to work at letting go of the pride that once ruled us as we parented from a “mom last” mentality.

    We have learned a lot about the connection of emotional health and physical health. We have seen many men and women get healthier physically when they get healthier emotionally. We will discuss this further in our next episode together. Don’t miss it!

    I had a great time talking with Keri Vasek about the unrealistic expectations we as moms put on ourselves. You might remember Keri from Episode 2 where we talked about Losing Your Joy in Motherhood. Keri is the mother of three “muddlings” and enjoys encouraging other moms to let their children PLAY.

    On this episode, Keri and I get real about the expectations that haunt mothers. As mothers, we often feel the need to keep a spotless house, present perfect children, and always be dressed and ready to host an event. Well, this is UNREALISTIC. Moms with little ones often have chaos, unruly children, and can be found in yoga pants and a messy bun. Keri and I share some of the unrealistic expectations we had early on as moms and agree that keeping it simple is best.

    I loved Keri’s 3 REALISTIC expectations for each day.

    1. Find time to read aloud.

    2. Invite your children to play.

    3. Be intentional about loving one another.

    Let’s EXPECT good things from our kids and from ourselves. My goal is that my children grow up to know they are loved, so that they feel free to give love to others.
