    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

How to Intentionally Connect with Your Children - Image provided by Pitman PhotographyOOOOOHHHH, I love the show this week. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of getting to know Graeme Pitman, creative director of The Circe Institute. As I have watched his social media accounts, I have giggled and sat in amazement at the connecting moments he has had with his three young children. I thought it would be fun to have Graeme on the show and talk about his family and the way they make the everyday moments matter.

In this episode, Graeme Pitman shares that time does matter in parenting and that quality time requires quantity time. When I watched the video of Graeme and his son Rowan talking about Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, I was thrilled to witness a beautiful conversation where a child was invited to share his honest thoughts and interpretation of the story. I asked Graeme to tell us why he made this inspiring video.

One of my favorite posts on Graeme’s Instagram account was that of his daughter belly laughing. I enjoyed imagining the conversation that occurred in their home to cause such a grand laugh. Even though his life looks picturesque on social media, Graeme assures me that they are not a fairy tale family. He insists they are just a mom and dad trying to relax and enjoy the journey.

Visit Graeme’s site to learn more about his gifts as a photographer and creative director.

What If I Think My Child Needs a Diagnosis? Sep 01, 2017
    Show notes

What if I think My Child Needs a Diagnosis?I have the coolest friends. Sometimes I forget that they are even more amazing in their careers. This is the case with my friend, Lei Rhyne. Not only did she homeschool her kiddos fro several years, is beautiful and funny, she is also a psychometrist… say that three times fast. When she mentioned to me that she helped families who saw their children struggling, I wanted to know more.

Lei Rhyne, psychometrist - What if I think my child needs a diagnosis?

In this episode Lei shares the full process involved of having your child tested and diagnosed, putting your fears to rest. She explains the first meeting with the Psychologist, the fact-finding mission that usually involves a couple of days of testing and observations and the results meeting with both the Psychometrist and Psychologist.

    Lei Rhyne

I think one of the best parts about getting a diagnosis from Lei her team at Fresh Start Mind is the fact that in the end, parents will be armed with the information and tools needed to help their child succeed emotionally, socially, and academically.

If suspected that something is not quite right with your child socially, emotionally or academically, you should consider giving Lei or another qualified educational consulting team a call.

Are You An Unaware Mommy Shamer? Aug 25, 2017
    Show notes

Are You an Unaware Mommy Shamer?Have you ever been guilty of mommy shaming? I sure have. I honestly did not realize I was doing it until years later, but unfortunately that doesn’t change the fact that I did it in the first place. I hope this episode will encourage you to look at yourself and make sure you aren’t guilty of the same thing.

Lesli often tells the story of me mommy shaming her shortly after we first met. She offered me a pair of shoes similar to the ones in the picture below and I refused them because “my daughter was not allowed to wear heels.” Yep, I said that. Nope, I am not proud. Yep, it was mommy shaming.

Once I looked back, I realized that I often mommy shamed in those early years. I would proudly state my opinion about holistic medicine, homeschooling, etc… not realizing that just my tone about the subject could be harming another mom.

Mothering is a mystery. Mothering is challenging. At times mothering is flat out overwhelming. Most of us are insecure of our decisions, especially early on. I think many of us “yell” out our opinion as a cry for affirmation. Unfortunately, our opinions are often seen as mommy shaming.

If you think you might be guilty of mommy shaming, here are my suggestions:

    1. Recognize why you mommy shame.
    2. Recognize when you mommy shame.
    3. Strive to be quietly confident, only sharing STRONG opinions among your inner circle.

Mommy shaming divides. We need each other. Let’s spend our time respecting each other, encouraging each other, and loving each other.

Questions from Texas Listeners for the Real Kathy Lee, in the Woodlands

During a recent trip to Texas, I had the pleasure of attending Morning in the Mud with Keri, speaking and sharing A Year of Playing Skillfully at the THSC conference in The Woodlands, meeting and receiving a makeover from the adorable Cuore, and several late night podcast recordings in the hotel room with Jamie and Arlene.

We thought our final podcast topic should come from the fine folks of Texas. We had some great questions and thought you might like to hear our great answers. 😉

    1. This is our second year doing A Year of Playing Skillfully. Do we need to add anything to the curriculum or just go deeper with the topics?
    2. What can I do to help my active two year-old stay busy indoors in Michigan during the LONG winters?
    3. Does A Year of Playing Skillfully cover Language Arts and what do you think about a Whole Language Approach?
    4. What do you do when your child seems to be enjoying all aspects of learning and out of the blue decides to push it away and resist?

Wow, these were all great questions and I loved having two seasoned mommas with me to answer them. You will want to tune in to hear our thoughts and opinions!

Next week, I am talking with Holly Giles from http://www.thegilesfrontier.com. Holly shares how her son’s brain injury helped her learn to school out of the box! Don’t miss it!

Bigs, Middles, and Littles – Homeschool Children Across The Ages Aug 04, 2017
    Show notes

Bigs, Littles, and Middles - us how we homeschool children across the ages

Jamie, Arlene, and I had so much fun recording our podcast for last week, we decided to keep the party going and record a second one. At every conference people ask us how we homeschool children across the ages. We figured it might be something the podcast world would want us to talk about as well, so we did.

Every homeschooling family is unique. Some people homeschool year round, some 3 days a week, some 8-12 everyday. It is hard to tell others exactly HOW to homeschool, but we all agreed on the following for those homeschooling different ages at the same time.

    1. Find the rhythm for YOUR family, don’t compare.
    2. Make sure your youngest gets some quality time by creating an engaging environment for them.
    3. Partner children up to work together. For example, while you are working with the middle child, have the oldest and youngest work together. While you work with the oldest, have the middle and youngest work together, etc…
    4. Don’t be afraid to seek the help of tutors, enroll some children in a hybrid, or partner up with other homeschooling families to meet the needs of your children.
    5. Take advantage of early mornings and naptime. Be willing to change your schedule and remember this is just a season. Flexibility is KEY.

If WE Could Turn Back Time Jul 28, 2017
    Show notes

If We Turn Back Time - Things We'd Tell Our Younger Selves about HomeschoolingTHSC in The Woodlands is always a fun conference. One of the reasons I love it so much is that I get to hang out with two of my favorite ladies on the planet, Arlene and Jamie. We even wore the same NAME on our nametags all weekend and enjoyed the confused looks we received.

We decided it would be fun to chat about the things we would tell our young selves (if we could) about this homeschooling gig. We definitely had some laughs and shared some pretty cool stuff. Here are the highlights:

    1. Lighten up.
    2. Don’t try and do everything.
    3. Only plan for the next year.
    4. Don’t compare.
    5. Trust your gut.

Homeschooling is a journey. It is a marathon. Some days will be great. Some days will be disastrous. Hang in there. We all agreed that we are thankful we did and think our kids would say the same.

If you aren’t a part of a co-op or moms group, start one. We all need likeminded people around us to encourage us on the tough days. Contact your state or local homeschooling organization if you aren’t sure where the cool homeschool kids hang out in your area.

Morning in the Mud with Keri Vasek Jul 21, 2017
    Show notes

Morning in the Mud with Keri Vasek and The Real Kathy LeeWhat a morning! Once a month, my sweet friend Keri Vasek opens her home up to mommas in the Houston area for a morning of togetherness and MUD! Yes, MUD! I wanted to see this event first hand so before I headed to the THSC conference in The Woodlands, I made a stop at Keri’s house to be a part of this epic event. It did not disappoint. I arrived as moms and kids were unloading out of their SUV’s and skipping into Keri’s house.

Once inside I smell lovely essential oils diffusing throughout her charming house and notice this inviting sign that offered clear directions to the necessities!

Coffee was the first thing on my agenda after an early flight from Atlanta. Sweet Keri had just the cup for me… A YOU’VE got this mug. The mud was ready and several children jumped right in. However, some children chose to participate in the many other activities Keri had to offer. Fly Guts, Instant Snow, Water Beads, Herbal Play Dough, and the many fun toys in the playroom. There was something for everyone and that was also true for the moms. There was coffee and PIE! There were quiet areas for nursing moms, a massage therapist available, and plenty of spaces to meet a new momma friend or catch up with an old one.

To add to the fun of this special day, I asked several of my friends to donate items for a giveaway! I have the BEST friends. Keri and I combined, had enough giveaways for every mom to go home with something! Thank you, thank you to the following:

    Alesha at Lakeshore Learning

Jeff Preston at Discount School Supply

    Holly at The Giles Frontier

Sam and Josiah at SD Smith – The Green Ember Series

    Samantha at Raddish Kids

    Classical Academic Press Purpose Coffee

    Keri and DoTerra Oils

Michael and Jessica Somerville with Tapestry of Grace

    The Homegrown Preschooler

    Kenyatta and Co.

So many great products given away to enhance the lives of little ones in Houston, TX!!!

Also, one of Keri’s dear friends (and mine too) brought her husband along to record an episode for their YouTube Channel. Check them out at Better Together Life on YouTube.

Keri, you are an inspiration! I pray that moms all over the world will grab on to this idea and invite others over for some Dirty, Messy, Noisy Work! Yes, there will be mud and a mess! More importantly, there will be memories and friendships that last a lifetime!

What a good day, a very good day!

Facing the Fall Jul 14, 2017
    Show notes

Facing the Fall - Making Plans for the Next Homeschool YearSince Ashley and I were talking summer, we thought we would also talk about the thing that comes right after summer… THE FALL. It seems that as soon as July 4th passes, my brain immediately turns to the fall and making plans.

Over the years I have learned a few things that help me as I face the next school year. We talked about that today on the show.

    1. Pray – Get alone and reflect on last year… what worked, what didn’t. What was challenging for the children? For you?
    2. Prioritize – Set priorities for your family this year. What will you focus on? What will your kids focus on? Anything unusual happening in your year such as; building a house, having a baby, moving to New Zealand?
    3. Plan and prepare – Know how you work and plan according to that. Gather materials, create spaces and work on a routine your family can follow.
    4. Pass on the rest!!! Say it with me…. NO, NO, NO. So many people grab at homeschool moms because it is assumed that homeschool moms have tons of free time on their hands. You must so know to the extra noise… making meals, babysitting, leading bible studies, etc… There is a time for all of that, but it isn’t now.

Fall will be here before we know it. I hope you are looking to this new school year with your blessings, I sure am!

Surviving Summer with Ashley Smoot Jul 07, 2017
    Show notes

Well, it was the week of July 4th and summer is in full swing. Boat rides at the lake, sun in the fun at the pool, cookouts, and fireworks. What makes those events even more fun is one of your besties coming in town to celebrate with you. Ashley and I had a blast hanging out and we decided that we had some thoughts on surviving summer that we wanted to share!

    1. Have a flexible routine. If you are like me, the strict schedule goes out the window the minute school is out. Well, let’s be honest, I am not a strict schedule kind of mom. However, we do have tighter routines in the school year, especially bedtime. With four teenagers and a tween at home, sleep is often overlooked in our home. I have to encourage my kids to keep on a decent routine or everyone will be walking around like zombies.

    2. Don’t focus on the serious academics during the summer. Take this time to learn a new hobby together, Help your child learn about a topic they have been asking about, read fun books, draw/ paint. Enjoy the FUN in the summer!

    3. Find time for YOU. Summer months are make alone time challenging. However, alone time is very needed for moms taking care of children all day. Hire a sitter, swap off with a friend, ask your hubby to help you… do whatever it takes to get a few minutes to yourself on a regular basis.

Have fun! Give your children (and yourself) permission to discover, explore and have a sense of wonder!!!
