    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

Showing LOVE after Valentine’s Day is OVER! Feb 17, 2018
    Show notes

Showing LOVE after Valentine's Day is Over ... with The Real Kathy Lee Valentine’s Day is a fun holiday for me as a mom. I so enjoy getting up early to write my kids love notes, set the table with candles and red, sparkly runners and cook a special breakfast. I want my children to know on this day that they are loved!
Valentine's Day Once Valentine’s Day was over, I started questioning my attitude towards the other 364 days of the year. Did I work hard to make sure my kids know they were loved everyday? If so, how do I accomplish that and how do I encourage you to love your kids every February 15th – February 13

    I came up with a few things…

    1. Write love notes throughout the year. Be creative. Write on their bathroom mirror with lipstick, leave notes on the pillows, tape notes to the back of the seat where they sit in the car, put notes in their books, in their backpacks, in their lunchboxes. Share specific things you love about them or positive things you have noticed them doing. ☺
    2. Spend TIME with them. I recently saw a news clip about young children and tablet time. The reporter stated that it is fine for young children to be on devices as long as adults were engaged with the children. They showed a video of one child and two adults sitting on a sofa. All three people were on their own device. This is NOT what I am talking about. Real time with your kids means devices are put away. Conversations are happening. Dinner Time, time in the car, while tucking in at night, etc… In order to have a real relationship with anyone, you MUST spend time with him or her.
    3. Honor their work. If your child paints a picture for you, hang it up. If they want to sing you a song, stop what you are doing and listen to it (it usually takes less than two minutes). If they want to read you their story, listen! Honoring their work will teach them that their work matters!
    4. Be careful with your conversations. We have all been guilty of getting on the phone with a girlfriend and firing off. Maybe you were upset with a friend, your partner, or even your child? If you think your child is busy playing and not paying attention, WRONG. They are listening to every word. Decide to share positive things instead… about your friend, your partner, and your child. Words are powerful so choose them carefully.
    5. Create a home that is welcoming for your children and their friends. I am honored when kids say they feel comfortable in my home. I love it when my kids want us to host the party, the bible study, and the special event. I want every one who walks into my home to feel welcomed and relaxed. Hopefully, your children will want to follow your lead and have that kind of home when they grow up and leave the nest.

I am far from perfect as a mom. However, I am confident that my kids will know that I love them and I want them to grow up and love well.

How will you show love today???

When You Lose Your Junk (with Ashley Smoot) Feb 12, 2018
    Show notes

When You Lose Your Junk - with Ashley Smoot and the Real Kathy LeeToday’s show was full of honesty. We covered some topics that have come up from conversations with moms over the past couple of months. First, we chatted about how and why we ALL lose our JUNK with our kids sometimes. You know what I mean. Those times when you yell, freak out, and act like a lunatic at them. Please tell me, you have had those moments too. I totally have lost it with my kids, too many times. I share my suggestion to look inward and try and reflect on the why? If I am being honest, I usually lose it because I fail to prepare, communicate, or take necessary steps to avoid the conflict. Both Ashley and I shared a personal story of losing our junk and what we learned afterwards. I always suggest asking your children for forgiveness and own your part in the situation.

After we had some online therapy during the podcast about losing our junk, we discussed some other issues that had been brought up recently. We talked about what to do when you feel completely overwhelmed and how to deal with unrest between the adults in the home. In the end, I think we noticed that we mentioned the words, rest, grace and forgiveness a lot. Pretty sure, it is because we all need those things to survive this parenting thing. Thanks for listening. If you have topics you would like for me to discuss or people you would like to hear from, let me know.

Who is Your Tribe and What is Your Scheduling Vibe? Feb 02, 2018
    Show notes

Who Is Your Tribe and What Is Your Scheduling Vibe? With The Real Kathy LeeOn this week’s show, I ramble… in a parking lot…in Albany, NY. Yesterday afternoon I got a call saying that one of my oldest son’s was being transferred by ambulance to a hospital forty-five minutes from his university campus. When you get that kind of call, you immediately book a flight to Albany, NY (even if you know that it is freaking freezing cold there). A short 2 ½ hours later, I was on a plane. Times like these remind you that you cannot do it alone. You can’t pick up the kids as planned. You can’t make dinner as planned. You can’t go to the appointment with your child as planned. You need your tribe. This time, my precious husband picked up most of the balls I would be dropping; he had landed from a business trip five minutes before I received that phone call. He is part of my tribe. The other members in my tribe bombarded my phone with calls/texts offering to help with the kids, the dogs, and the business. I am blessed to have a tight tribe. They are a small group of women who have been there, no matter what. Do you have such a group? If you do, say out loud… I AM BLESSED. If you do not, find one!

Originally, I was planning to answer a couple of questions about scheduling and lack of interests in activities. I do mention both of those things on today’s show, in a rambling kind of way. Honestly, my mind was on my family today. Hopefully, you can make sense of my rambling and be encouraged on your journey of motherhood.

Guess what? I know you don’t have it together and you know that I don’t have it together. You know what else? NO ONE has it all together. Let’s rest in that and be thankful that in spite of our shortcomings, we LOVE our families fiercely and are raising up a beautiful group of future hot messes.

Have a great week!! Celebrate your TRIBE!

Thanks for listening. If you have topics you would like for me to discuss or people you would like to hear from, let me know. Just email me at kathy@thehomegrownpreschooler.com or shoot me a message on social media.

Mothering is a Marathon with Keri Vasek Jan 19, 2018
    Show notes

Mothering is a Marathon with Keri VasekIt had been a while since I had Keri on the show. Actually, it had been a while since Keri and I had talked in real life. It was good to catch up with her and hear what was on her heart. Keri took a few minutes to catch us up on her home and family. She has been a busy lady since we last chatted. Next, Keri asked about my suggestions for sibling disagreements. I admit that I don’t know all the answers on this one, but I did have a few thoughts and suggestions to teach children to be kind to one another.

Keri and I spent a good amount of time talking about a statement I often make during my speaking engagements, “Mothering is a marathon.” I do say that a lot. I really want parents to understand that it isn’t a sprint, it isn’t just getting them to kindergarten, or high school, or even adulthood. It is a long, tough journey that has ups and downs… highs and lows. It will test us, require patience and definitely demand endurance. It will be worth it. It is worth it.

We chatted a little bit about the popular TV show, This is Us. If you haven’t seen it, you should. I am pretty sure my twin is the writer for this show. I know you feel the same. It is so true, so raw, so needed. We can all learn valuable lessons from this show.

Thanks for listening. If you have topics you would like for me to discuss or people you would like to hear from, let me know. Just email me at kathy@thehomegrownpreschooler.com or shoot me a message on social media.

Fun Ways to Survive the Winter with Little Ones Jan 12, 2018
    Show notes

Fun Ways to Survive Winter with Little OnesOn this week’s show, I share my thoughts about winter… YUCK. I am a sunny, warm weather girl all the way. I admit, the dreary winter days can get tough. I think they are tougher when you have little ones who are tired of being inside and are whining their way through winter. Hopefully, the ideas I share on today’s show will help you prepare some fun things for your little ones and bring a little joy to all who are in your home! Thanks for listening!

    • Make some dough! I love dough. Doug is a great sensory experience, provides lots of possibilities for exploration and keeps children engaged for a long time. Below are some of my favorite dough recipes:

    • Cloud Dough – If you have little ones, you probably already have these ingredients. It is 4 cups of flour to 1 cup of baby oil. Mix well. If dough doesn’t stick together, add a little more baby oil
    • Salt Dough – This one is super simple. It is ½ salt, ½ water, 1 cup of flour. If your child wants to save their creation with this dough, simply air dry for a few days.

    `

    • Basic Play Dough – This is your best friend. Don’t be scared of cooked dough, it really is easy. It is 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, 2 tsp. cream of tarter, 1/3 cup salt and 1 TBSP vegetable oil. Mix and cook over a low heat until dough pulls away from pan. Move dough to parchment paper to cool. Once cooled, knead well. You can always add color or scents to your dough. At The Homegrown Preschooler, we love to steep some vanilla chai tea in the water to make Herbal Play Dough. `
    • Slime – I have been making this basic slime recipe for over twenty years. Just add about equal amounts of liquid Glue and liquid starch. Knead. Rinse in water to get off any excess stickiness. You can add a little shaving cream to vary the texture.

    • Fly Guts – This process remains one of my favorites. You will need a couple of bars of ivory soap, toilet paper and water. Grate the soap into a large bowl. Add 1-2 rolls of toilet paper and enough water to create the desired consistency. There is no wrong way to do this. Thicker fly guts is fun for building. Thinner makes interesting fun!
    • Provide lots of sensory experiences: Try cornstarch and water. Lots of cornstarch with a little water makes an amazing slimy concoction.
    • Make an Obstacle Course: You can use tape, crepe paper, ribbon, or string for this idea. The hallway makes a great Obstacle course area.
    • Make a Bear Den: Create a tent in your home. Use leftover Christmas lights to make it extra special.
    • Paint: Painting on the windows provides children with an unusual opportunity indoors. They can use big strokes and movements. If you don’t want your windows painted, simply tape paper to the window and let them paint away!
    • Read Alouds – Gather and read in the bear tent or by a cozy fire. Find an activity to do that correlates with the book you read (ie- make green eggs, write a “what happened next” story, paint a picture).
    • Cook Together – Create a menu together and cook. Take your time and let them really be involved. Cooking with little ones is more than letting them stir. ☺
    • Make a Band- I am sure you have all kinds of items in your home that can be an instrument. Rolled oats containers, pans, pots, cups. Make shakers with old beans and paper plates.
    • Put on a Puppet Show- Make puppets out of old socks, brown paper bags, and collage materials. Put on a puppet show for your kids and invite them to put on a puppet show for you.
    • Dance Party / Clean the Floors – Give kids clean white socks and a bottle of vinegar/water. Put on some music and dance your way to a clean floor. ☺

I hope these ideas will help you keep your sanity during these Winter Months. Say yes to exploring today!!!

    Hitting Reset in 2018 Jan 05, 2018
    Show notes

I am still blown away that it is 2018! I was just texting a friend that I met back in 1988 during a summer mission trip to Daytona Beach Florida. Thirty years… what? How has it been thirty years since that magnificent summer? Okay, I digress. Back to the show.

This week I wanted to talk about the need to RESET before we take on this New Year. If you are like me, there were some unmet goals n 2017 and the holidays have turned my fairly routine life into chaos and clutter. How do we get back on track in 2018? Here are my thoughts…

    1. R – Remember how far we’ve come.
    2. E – Evaluate 2017, honestly. What can we learn from our mistakes? I shared that one of my mistakes in 2017 was not caring for my health as I should. I mentioned a new program I have started called Plant Paradox. You can read more about Dr. Gundry and his program at http://drgundry.com/

    the Plant Paradox

    1. S – Stay Focused. I start off focused, but tend to fade as the year goes on. Staying focused can keep us from making some of the same mistakes this year.
    2. E – Expectations. This one gets me. UNREALISTIC expectations ruin relationships. Don’t expect something of someone without talking to him or her about it first. That goes for your friends, your spouse, and your kids.
    3. T – Take time to reflect, plan, be alone and move forward.

With a little effort we can RESET our homes, our minds, our schedules. Take some time to be still and be honest with yourself. Set some goals, set a routine, and move forward. You’ve got this!!!

Setting Intentions for 2018 with Christy Montes Dec 29, 2017
    Show notes

Setting Intentions for 2018I can’t believe 2017 is coming to an end. It seems just yesterday I was ringing in 2017 with family and sweet friends, including ASH A LEE. I remember last year, Ashley and I decided that FORWARD would be our word for 2017 and I think both of us lived out that word in our lives. As we thought about 2018, Balance kept coming to mind. I need balance in all areas… work, home, health, relationships. I plan to work on balance in 2018. My best girls, Christy and Ashley also decided to make balance their word for 2018. What is your word?

On this episode, Christy and I talk about setting intentions for 2018, deciding what our focus will be and writing it down. We talked about vision boards, journaling, good books, and daring to grow. Do you have plans to work on your self as 2018 approaches? If you need help, let me suggest some good resources:

    1. Brazen by Leanna Tankersley

    Brazen

    2. The Gifts of Imperfection, Braving the Wilderness, and Rising Strong by Brene’ Brown

    3. Start Where You Are by Meera Lee Patel

Find some time to be quiet and reflect on 2017. After you do that, think about the next year. Plan some time for you, for you and your partner, for you and your family. I hope 2018 is your best year ever!

    Happy New Year,

Headache Free Holiday Traditions with Lesli RichardsToday, Lesli (my business partner and friend) and I chatted about our holiday traditions. We agreed that holiday traditions can be a blessing as long as you don’t get sucked into believing that things must go a certain way every year.

We each have traditions that have been carried on from our parents/grandparents. I shared my special traditions of the shoebox and Lesli shared about her family stocking tradition.

Traditions can change over the years and that’s okay. The point of traditions is to honor family heritage and make memories. Keep it simple.

Lesli used to sew PJ’s for her entire family… NOT anymore… thank goodness. She would drive herself into a frenzy trying to get them all done in time. She mentioned the year that she made her husband’s pants too short. The proof is in the attached picture.

I mentioned how I would go to great lengths to make sure all of my kids had matching, Christmas PJ’s. Now, I am happy if they have Pj’s at all. 🙂

    pajama tradition

Whether your thing is Gingerbread Houses, Caroling on Christmas Eve, or making cookies for all the neighbors… keep it simple. Focus on what matters, family!!

Holidays on a Budget with Lesli Richards Dec 01, 2017
    Show notes

Holidays on a Budget with Lesli RichardsOn today’s show, I invited my business partner, Lesli Richards from www.thehomegrownpreschooler.com to chat with me about enjoying the holidays during the lean years.Lesli and I have both experienced years when we had no idea how we would pay for Christmas. However, with a little creativity and lowered expectations we did it.

    The gifts…

    • Think about the child’s interest.
    • Have a date night at a thrift store. Think about adjusting items you find to make a fabulous new gift for your child.
    • Post on social media if you are looking for something classic. We had a friend give us a dollhouse that we saved for months. It was the perfect Polly Pocket Village.
    • Have a re-gifting swap, might find the perfect stocking stuffers.

    The food…

    • Keep the food simple. Chili or Stew with bread and salad make a great, inexpensive Christmas meal.
    • Include the children. Bake together. Makes excellent inexpensive gifts for friends, teachers, and neighbors.
    • It is about gathering, not the menu.
    • Don’t miss out on the memories because you are in the kitchen.

    The decorations…

    • Find greenery from your yard (or a friend’s yard).
    • Don’t completely change decor, just add Christmas sprinkles.

    • Have a Christmas decoration swap at the beginning of the season.

    The reason…

    • Be honest with children about the lean years.
    • Get involved in a community project to give back.
    • Find a great devotional to keep you focused on the reason.

What I Think Your Preschooler Really Needs for Christmas Nov 25, 2017
    Show notes

What I Think Your Preschooler Really Needs for ChristmasOn today’s show I talked about Christmas presents for young learners. Well-meaning adults often focus on the amount of presents under the tree, but this year I want to encourage them (and you) to focus on quality toys and presents instead.

    • Quality Wooden Blocks – I mention Constructive Playthings on the show and they have great products. Honestly, my favorite are Community Playthings and their website is www.communityplaythings.com Sooo worth the money!
    • Books – Good books are a must! For little ones, focus on board books with beautiful (real, when possible) pictures. Rhyming books, silly books, read –alouds are great for children, as they get a little older. Check out this link…http://time.com/100-best-childrens-books/
    • Kits – Create different kits for a great present that will keep your kids engaged. You can decorate plastic containers with lids for easy storage and cute presentation.

Exploration Kit- Nature journal (blank notebook), bird / flower books, pencils, magnifying glass, collection containers, tweezers for collecting bugs and such.

Art Kit- Check out www.discountschoolsupply.com and www.lakeshore.com for quality art products for kids. Paper (large and small sizes), blank canvas’, pencils, paint, brushes, stickers, collage materials, and glue are all great in an art kit.

Bath Kit- Shaving cream, brushes, scrubbers, soaps, squirt toys, and even a new tootbrush.

Baby Doll Kit – baby dolls, blankets, small bucket for bathing, baby wash cloths, baby soap, bottles.

Sensory Kit- slime materials (glue and liquid starch, waterbeads, play-doh ingredients, textured items)

    • Grocery Store and such – www.ana-white.com has a great plan for a grocery store/flower shop/post office/puppet stage… If you are not a woodworker, fill a small grocery cart with a cash register, a receipt pad, and some empty food boxes. My kids loved this cash register and it can be found from a variety of retailers.

    • Tent / Space for One – Creating a cozy space for one in your home is of benefit to you and your child. Many retailers have tents that can be purchased. Also include some cozy pillows, a few books, and maybe a small container of manipulatives or even a simple memory game.
    • Playhouse – Try and find something general enough that children can pretend with people or animals. Check out this treehouse dollhouse from www.landofnod.com.

Also, we’ve been having fun playing but I want to do more read alouds. The only thing is that my youngest is just too noisy. Is that something about discipline or just age? Should I do read alouds when he’s asleep?

    1. Amanda asked, “ Do you, and if so HOW do you find time for yourself to avoid burnout? I feel like I can keep it together for a couple of weeks – getting up early to get a jump on the day, spending much needed time with the Lord, being patient and sweet with the kids (LOL!), saying yes and playing skillfully, keeping up with laundry and cleanup, cooking meals… by 3rd week I start feeling spent and the laundry starts slipping, I’m inclined to order dinner out every night and my best-laid school plans fall behind. Do you have a strategy for self-refreshment?

I loved answering all of these questions on the show. If you have questions for me, submit them via FB or instagram (The Real Kathy Lee) or message me through the website.
