    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

Self-Awareness: Looking in the Mirror with the Real Kathy LeeThis week I spent hours and hours talking with some friends that were going through some pretty serious issues. Ladies, we need each other. This week isn’t about your toddler biting or your four year-old who wets the bed. This week, let’s talk honestly about YOU… and me… and all of us.

    self-a·ware·ness

    ˈˌself əˈwernəs/

    noun

    1. conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires.

“the process can be painful but it leads to greater self-awareness”

Would you say that you are self-aware? How does one become self-aware? Does it even matter? On this week’s episode I share my thoughts on this subject and my journey of self-awareness. I fully believe that our past influences our present. Believe me, I don’t have it all figured out and the number one thing I tell everyone is GIVE YOURSELF GRACE. We all need it!

I suggest the following as you look in the mirror:

    1. Be still
    2. Be honest
    3. Be vulnerable
    4. Share your journey with a few people you can trust.
    5. Be willing to learn.

Check out Andy Stanley’s sermon, What Happy Couples Know.

If you haven’t heard of Robin Sharma, please check out his site.

Of course, Brene’ Brown’s TED Talk is one of my favorites on the subject of vulnerability and her book, Rising Strong is brilliant.

Hugs for you as you take a look in the mirror this week. May you find the strength to be honest with yourself and address anything that might have been hiding or tucked away.

Say YES and have a great week!!!

You Feel How You Feel Apr 27, 2018

You Feel How You Feel -- with the Real Kathy LeeHenry was not too happy about taking a picture as a COW! I tried to explain that getting FREE Chick Fil A was definitely a reason to be happy, but he would have NO part in it. He was mad.

Helping kids navigate through their emotions is one of the toughest parts of parenting. Heck, it is often tough for us as adults to navigate through our own emotions. On this week’s episode, we talk about the big subject of FEELINGS.

I think Mr. Rogers was the first to encourage talking about how you feel. He would always say that it was brave to talk about your feelings. I agree. It is hard to say you are mad or sad or hurt. However, if we want well-adjusted adults, we need to teach them to be able to work through all of the normal emotions of living. Often, we tell kids to stop crying or just get over it, but this doesn’t help them work through the emotion. Giving them permission to be sad or mad is the first step in helping them move forward. Next, find a way to help them navigate their feelings and create healthy coping mechanisms to dealing with them, especially those of deep sadness or anger. Teaching them how to take deep breaths, find space and time to process, and talk through how they feel are some that we have used in our home.

One of the best ways to help children deal with their emotions is to model coping skills when dealing with your own emotions. We all get sad and mad; it is how we deal with it that matters most.

Say YES and have a great week!!!

Lessons From the Road – Families: Does Size Matter? Apr 20, 2018
    Show notes

Families: Does Size Matter? Lessons From the Road with The Real Kathy LeeI had such a great time speaking at the Midwest Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio! I met so many moms and dads who all desire to love and teach their kids well. This weekend, I heard a lot of moms share how overwhelmed they were and how they were struggling at home. This combined with some recent conversations about family size and kids growing up feeling left out and overlooked made me start thinking about family size. Is there a perfect number of kids? Is there a family size that is easiest to manage? Does a small family size guarantee each child will have a quality childhood? Are we all called to raise 12 + arrows? Lots of things were running through my mind. When my dear friend, Christy Montes showed up for coffee and catch up we started talking about my weekend in Cincinnati and recent thoughts. I decided that maybe some of you had been thinking about these things too, so I grabbed my microphone and hit record.

Honestly, Christy and I have no idea how many children are best for your family. However, we have been involved with lots of families for many years and have experience and witnessed some things that we thought we should share to help you as you talk openly about this subject. Let us know what you thought about this episode. HUGS from home (where I get to stay for several weeks)!!!

    Blessings!

ps- Did you hear that I am turning 50 this year?? To celebrate, I am inviting ten moms from across the country to spend the weekend at my house in August. My goal is for you to sit by the pool, relax and have great conversation with other moms. My bestie, Christy will be hanging out with us too! If you want to take the final spot, shoot me an email or message on social media and tell me why you want to be chosen!! Good luck!

Say YES and have a great week!!!

Thanks for listening. If you have topics you would like for me to discuss or people you would like to hear from, let me know. Just email me at kathy@thehomegrownpreschooler.com or shoot me a message on social media.

What Is A Dad Supposed To Do? With The Real Kathy LeeI am back from the cruise with Grace (we had a wonderful time) and in Cincinnati for the GHC convention. This was a great time to catch up with Mike Somerville with Tapestry of Grace! I adore Michael and his family (Jessica and the girls). They are a beautiful example of to new homeschool families. As second generation homeschoolers, they have lived in this crazy world for some time now and have an interesting perspective to share.

Today, Michael shares his thoughts on a Father’s role in homeschooling. I love his ideas and think that every dad could benefit from listening to what he has to say. If you are a mom, don’t think this episode isn’t for you. It is. Take a listen and think through the ways your man can support you on this journey. An honest conversation about your needs can help your man know what his role should be.

Thoughts about my Upcoming Graduate Apr 06, 2018
    Show notes

Thoughts About My Upcoming Graduate - The Real Kathy LeeI can’t believe that I have another senior this year (insert tears)! In just a few short weeks, Grace will be graduating high school and pursuing her passions as a make up artist and esthetician. I am so proud of the young woman she has become. Before she graduates, we are heading on a senior trip (a Caribbean Cruise) this week. As I was thinking about this upcoming trip and her graduation, I started asking myself if I have covered all of the parenting talks. Of course not, how do we EVER share EVERYTHING. I did decide to make a list of some conversations and topics I wanted to have with her this week. I can’t think of another time in her 18 years that we have been alone for this long. We will be together for eight days and I thought I would mention one topic per day.

    1. BE YOURSELF
    2. LOVE YOURSELF
    3. LOVE OTHERS
    4. HAVE BOUNDARIES
    5. TALKING ALWAYS HELPS
    6. RELATIONSHIPS ARE WORK
    7. QUALITY IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN QUANTITY, ESPECIALLY IN FRIENDSHIPS
    8. EXPECTATIONS RUIN RELATIONSHIPS

I am excited to spend this time with Grace. I want to say a special thank you to my husband who encouraged me to say YES to this special trip with her. Next week, I will be in Cincinnati at the GHC conference! Can’t wait to see what lessons are waiting for me there! Happy SPRING!

Dr. Angie Ates is a Natural Health Educator and a mom of three who has been on an amazing journey and is now helping others find physical and emotional health. Please do yourself a favor and find a lovely spot in the sunshine (all alone if possible) to listen to this episode. Take along your headphones, a journal, a pen, and maybe a pack of tissues. This episode just might save your life.

Dr. Angie shares her thoughts on why so many women in their 30’s are facing autoimmune disease and other illnesses. She shares some powerful words for young moms who are rapidly losing themselves to their role of motherhood. I love the practical advice and encouragement she offers. I know that many of you are going to be challenged to look in the mirror and be honest with yourself. I pray that you will take that challenge and implement what you hear on this episode. Let’s agree to do at least ONE thing to show ourselves love. I plan on implementing repeating lovely affirmations to myself every morning, what will you do?

Lessons Learned on the Road – Making a Difference Mar 23, 2018
    Show notes

Wow, what a week! I had planned to have Mike and Jessica Somerville on the show this week, but I bet you have learned by now that my life rarely goes as planned. We will have the Somerville’s on soon, I promise. Instead, this week I decided to share about my latest lessons learned on the road. This time, I was in Fort Worth, TX and making a difference kept coming to mind. I am sure I have mentioned before that the reason I do this job (writing and speaking) for a living is because of my great love and respect for young children. As much as I really do enjoy encouraging moms and dads, I get the most joy out of meeting and spending time with young children, hoping I am making a difference.

When I think back to the person who role modeled making a difference in the lives of young children, I can’t help but think of my childhood crush. I am sure you know exactly who that is… Mr. Rogers. Mr. Rogers treated children with kindness and respect. He believed they were worthy of hearing good things about themselves, in knowing they were worthy of love and capable of loving. I love this trailer for the upcoming Mr. Roger’s documentary. I also tear up watching this video with Mr. Rogers and his friend Jeff. Mr. Rogers show us that even tough subjects can be approached with tenderness and care. Oh, how I want to make a difference in children’s lives the way Mr. Rogers did.

How do you want to make a difference? What legacy do you want to leave behind? When someone mentions your name, what visual do you want him or her to have? For me, it is simple. I want others to remember that I desired to make a difference in the lives of children (especially my own) and the adults who cared for them.

This week’s sponsor fits in perfectly with our theme. The Perfect Season movie is a true story about a young volleyball player who tragically lost her life and the difference she made in the lives of her team and her community. Check it out at miracleseason.movie.

Lessons Learned from the Road – GHC Greenville Conference Mar 16, 2018
    Show notes

Lessons Learned from the Road from GHC Greenville - The Real Kathy LeeLast week was the first conference of the season and I was reminded why it is so important to get out there on the road and share my message of play and imperfect motherhood. In addition to sharing my heart, I get the pleasure of knowing some amazing people. I got to catch up with Dr. Kathy Koch (I even used this great book of hers as a reference in one of my talks). She understands the mind of children and how to teach to their gifts and levels.

I also got the chance to briefly hear about the rockstar, Sam Smith. He was soooo busy signing autographs and meeting his fans that I had to stand in line to say hello. J It was great hearing about his success and seeing his new book and Merch!

Speaking of new merch, we introduced some at our booth!! We rolled out a new booth set up, new t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, mugs, our summer curriculum presale and the promise of an amazing planner. We have quite a bit going on for us at The Homegrown Preschooler.

This week we are in Ft. Worth TX! Looking forward to catching up with more friends, including the Somerville Family with Tapestry of Grace. Make sure to tune in to the show to hear what they have been up to with the business and with their beautiful family!

Lost and Found with Kendra Fletcher Mar 03, 2018
    Show notes

Lost and Found: Losing Religion, Finding Grace - with Kendra FletcherThe “right” homeschooling philosophy. The right brand of theology. The “right” meal-planning, home-managing, keep-it-all-together parenting. Kendra Fletcher, homeschooling mom of eight, had it all “right,” until it all fell apart. In the course of eighteen months, Kendra found her baby in a coma, ran over her five-year-old, and nearly lost her eight-year-old to a septic ruptured appendix. Lost and Found is the story of how God used those events to transform her family s self-righteous religion into freedom in Christ. Fletcher’s debut book is the gripping true story of how God used suffering to save her family from empty religion. As wave after wave of crisis hit, the Fletchers discovered that getting religion “right” wasn’t a good substitute for a living relationship with a loving God. Through their suffering, they learned about misplaced identities and false hope, and they threw themselves wholly into the arms of Jesus where they found the grace they needed. Fletcher, a well-known writer and conference speaker in Christian homeschooling circles, addresses the quiet legalism that so easily infiltrates Christian communities and exposes the dangers of focusing our hopes on the “right” ways of worship, work, and family life. More than a memoir, Lost and Found invites all of us to give up the things that hold us in bondage and find our value, worth, significance, hope, and identity in Christ alone. – AMAZON

Today’s episode was short, but extra sweet. The super cool mom of many, Kendra Fletcher agreed to be on the show to talk about life in the Fletcher house and her book, Lost and Found: Losing Religion, Finding Grace and her travel plans this homeschool season. I love what Kendra shared and am blown away by what she and her family had to go through during an 18-month period. I am grateful that she was willing to share her story with us in her book. We did end up cutting the episode short due to some technical issues, but I am thankful that I got to hear about her book. I got so excited that I decided to order TWO from Amazon, one for me and one to give away. Boom! 😉 If you are interested in getting that second copy of Kendra’s book, go leave a review on itunes or comment about the show on social media.

Nobody Doesn’t Like Sarah Lee Feb 24, 2018
    Show notes

Nobody Doesn't Like Sarah Lee with The Real Kathy LeeMy sweet Sarah Lee. I thought it would be fun to have my youngest daughter, Sarah on the show today. Fun fact about Sarah, when she was born we named her Sarah Elizabeth. Her sister and I wanted to call her by the nickname Ellie and so we did. However, when Sarah turned five she looked at me and wanted to know why we called her Ellie if her name was Sarah. I tried to explain to her that Ellie was a beautiful nickname, but she would have no part in it. From that moment on she demanded to be called Sarah. All of her monograms and nametags had to be replaced. Do you know how hard that is for a girl from the south?

Anyway, Sarah shares her journey of homeschooling and her advice for moms of teenagers today. I am fortunate to have a great relationship with all of my kids and really believe it is because I have always given them permission to express their feelings and try my best to just listen when they need to talk. Sarah has quite a bit of wisdom for a young teenager; I think this week is definitely worth a listen.

BTW- Sarah mentioned her school on the show today. You can find out more about Artios @ www.artiosacademies.com. I don’t think Sarah mentioned that she cheers for a homeschool football league (The 2017 National Champs, I might add). You can learn more about them at www.forcehsfootball.com. I also mentioned that I am reading a fantastic book called The Leader Without a Title, by Robin Sharma. I recommend this book for all moms. Many of the things mentioned in this book apply to us as we are leading our children in education and life.

    Have a great week!!!
