    The Real Kathy Lee

The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms.  It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

Kathy Lee answers a question from a listener about playrooms and shares thoughts on creating inviting spaces for your little ones!Special Replay of The Real Kathy Lee: When my sweet friend, Misty sent me a Marco Polo (a cool video app) asking my opinion on her child’s playroom, I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts with all of you on creating inviting spaces for your little ones!

Everyone is worthy of feeling as if they belong, especially our children and most definitely in their own home. Before you begin designing an inviting space for your children, I suggest you get on your hands and knees and crawl around your home. YEP, literally get on your hands and knees. Spaces look so different from a child’s eye level. Ask yourself, how do things look and feel from that level. Are there enough “small” areas for your children to work, play, discover and explore?

    1. Work – Children need small ways to contribute to the family. They need work. Create spaces for their belongings on their level. Have a drawer for their cups, plates, utensils, and special cooking items. Have a bucket with basic cleaning supplies and cloths. Place hooks low enough so that children can hang up their own coats. Creating good habits at a young age pay off.
    2. Play – Children are meant to play. How easy is it to say YES to their ideas for play? Less is definitely more in this area. Children do not need 20 containers full of toys in a playroom. During the early years it is likely that everything that is in a container will end up dumped on the floor, all at once. Buy quality toys and items that inspire open-ended play. This is more engaging for the child. I suggest you keep it basic. Some quality blocks, some arts and crafts materials, something that inspires pretend play (dress up, kitchen, baby dolls, etc..) and a cozy corner with books. Put everything else in a large plastic bin and keep it for a month. During that month, move anything your child asks for into a different bin. Whatever is left in the original bin after a month, donate.

    3. Discover and Explore- Kids need permission to get outside in search of discovery and exploration. Do you have a space for them to do that? Do you have materials such as nature journals, pencils, binoculars, and bird/flower books to inspire them? Keeping these type of items handy will help you say yes!

Creating inviting spaces is worth the time and effort! Get down on your hands and knees and start crawling around your space today!

Back to School Replay – Homeschool Children Across The Ages Aug 17, 2022

Bigs, Littles, and Middles - us how we homeschool children across the ages

Jamie, Arlene, and I had so much fun recording our podcast for last week, we decided to keep the party going and record a second one. At every conference people ask us how we homeschool children across the ages. We figured it might be something the podcast world would want us to talk about as well, so we did.

Every homeschooling family is unique. Some people homeschool year round, some 3 days a week, some 8-12 everyday. It is hard to tell others exactly HOW to homeschool, but we all agreed on the following for those homeschooling different ages at the same time.

    1. Find the rhythm for YOUR family, don’t compare.
    2. Make sure your youngest gets some quality time by creating an engaging environment for them.
    3. Partner children up to work together. For example, while you are working with the middle child, have the oldest and youngest work together. While you work with the oldest, have the middle and youngest work together, etc…
    4. Don’t be afraid to seek the help of tutors, enroll some children in a hybrid, or partner up with other homeschooling families to meet the needs of your children.
    5. Take advantage of early mornings and naptime. Be willing to change your schedule and remember this is just a season. Flexibility is KEY.

Special Replay: Facing the Fall Sep 27, 2019

Facing the Fall - Making Plans for the Next Homeschool YearSince Ashley and I were talking summer, we thought we would also talk about the thing that comes right after summer… THE FALL. It seems that as soon as July 4th passes, my brain immediately turns to the fall and making plans.

Over the years I have learned a few things that help me as I face the next school year. We talked about that today on the show.

    1. Pray – Get alone and reflect on last year… what worked, what didn’t. What was challenging for the children? For you?
    2. Prioritize – Set priorities for your family this year. What will you focus on? What will your kids focus on? Anything unusual happening in your year such as; building a house, having a baby, moving to New Zealand?
    3. Plan and prepare – Know how you work and plan according to that. Gather materials, create spaces and work on a routine your family can follow.
    4. Pass on the rest!!! Say it with me…. NO, NO, NO. So many people grab at homeschool moms because it is assumed that homeschool moms have tons of free time on their hands. You must so know to the extra noise… making meals, babysitting, leading bible studies, etc… There is a time for all of that, but it isn’t now.

Fall will be here before we know it. I hope you are looking to this new school year with your blessings, I sure am!

Special Replay: What If I Think My Child Needs a Diagnosis? Sep 13, 2019
    Show notes

What if I think My Child Needs a Diagnosis?Special Replay from Kathy Lee! I have the coolest friends. Sometimes I forget that they are even more amazing in their careers. This is the case with my friend, Lei Rhyne. Not only did she homeschool her kiddos fro several years, is beautiful and funny, she is also a psychometrist… say that three times fast. When she mentioned to me that she helped families who saw their children struggling, I wanted to know more.

Lei Rhyne, psychometrist - What if I think my child needs a diagnosis?

In this episode Lei shares the full process involved of having your child tested and diagnosed, putting your fears to rest. She explains the first meeting with the Psychologist, the fact-finding mission that usually involves a couple of days of testing and observations and the results meeting with both the Psychometrist and Psychologist.

    Lei Rhyne

I think one of the best parts about getting a diagnosis from Lei her team at Fresh Start Mind is the fact that in the end, parents will be armed with the information and tools needed to help their child succeed emotionally, socially, and academically.

If suspected that something is not quite right with your child socially, emotionally or academically, you should consider giving Lei or another qualified educational consulting team a call.

Keeping Your Calm This School Year - Tips for Surviving Back to School with The Real Kathy Lee - Listen Now! #podcast #moms #homeschool

Special Replay! School approaches … can you believe it? Here’s a special replay with some special tips to help you get ready to have a calm school year!

As this school year approaches, I thought I would share some of my plans to have a calm year! This year I have one 7th grader, one 9th grader, two high school seniors, one in Estethecian School and one junior in college. Whew, that is a lot. I will be honest, the first couple of weeks I find myself struggling to get us all on the same page. Between school, jobs, sports, etc… keeping this house running smoothly is a challenge.

Here are some of my tips for surviving back to school 2018:

    1. Create Dream Posters.
    2. Create a Healthy Meal Plan.
    3. Follow Through on Healthy Meal Plan.
    4. Plan a family night to make dream posters. You will need poster board, markers, magazine, and glue. Invite your children to create a dream poster and display them in your home.
    5. Have a Dream Poster Date Night with your partner/spouse.
    6. SLEEP… get sleep. Make sure everyone in the home is getting enough sleep.
    7. Organize your space and remember less is better. Don’t forget to create a cozy corner for reading books/getting away.
    8. Take time to watch and listen. What are your kids talking about, playing with, dreaming of? What pushes their buttons, brings them joy, challenges them?
    9. Create a realistic routine that you can live with. Encourage children to stick with routine.
    10. Be Flexible – If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it.

Say YES and have a great week!!! Don’t forget that The Homegrown Preschooler’s biggest sale of the year is going on until Labor Day, save $35 off any order of $150 or more.

Sharing the Secret of Sexual Abuse Apr 28, 2019
    Show notes

Sharing the Secret of Sexual Abuse - a tough topic on this week's podcast on The Real Kathy LeeHas anyone watched the Leaving Neverland Documentary or the Oprah special that followed? Well, I did, and boy did it stir up all kinds of emotions for me. While I am a fan of the #metoo movement and the fact that adults are sharing their stories of sexual abuse and hopefully healing through that, I am disturbed for our children. We need to find a way to stop childhood sexual abuse by encouraging them to share their secrets.

In this episode I share my own story of sexual abuse and how it felt to keep the secret until I was 19. I was repeated molested from the time I was eight years old until the age of fifteen. I was terrified that if I shared the secret my family would fall apart, and I would get in immense trouble. Somehow, I felt it was my fault. Did you know that one in six boys are molested by the time they are 18 and one in four girls? Heartbreaking. The thing most of these cases have in common is that the children are told that they must keep the secret to protect everyone involved. Parents, be careful how you talk about secrets. It is important that your children learn from an early age that you are their advocate and every secret must to be told to the people they trust the most (their parents). This is such a tough subject to talk about, but we MUST.

If you, yourself were sexual abused, check out this article about adults dealing with childhood sexual abuse.

    2. What are my constant struggles?
    3. What is the root of those struggles?
    4. What are my strengths?
    5. What would others say about me?

Is YES Really Best? with Keri Vasek Apr 05, 2019
    Show notes

Both Keri and I know that saying yes isn’t always easy and sometimes is simply impossible. This podcast may help! #sayyes I always have a blast catching up with Keri Vasek. I think I need to purposely schedule to have her on the podcast so we will take time to chat on the phone. This week we decided to talk about the YES I always talk about in my talks, on this show, and pretty much any time I am with young moms.

Keri is a great example of how creating a home full of YES can change everything. As she shares on this episode, her home has become more creative, more discovery based, and more interesting since she decided to say yes to playing in the rain, digging for worms, and creative a mud pit in her backyard. Both Keri and I know that saying yes isn’t always easy and sometimes is simply impossible. This episode is not meant to lay on the guilt, it is to encourage you to give your children a chance at childhood, real childhood. I think we would all agree that we want our children to discover, experience, and have a sense of wonder about the world they live in. Children are born curious and full of ideas. Unfortunately, we adults often stifle those God given traits with our boundaries and our NO.

Find a way to say YES today. Start with one YES. Next, try TWO. Before you know it, you might have the nickname my kids gave me… the queen of YES. I will take that.
