    Ep 124: Ambition at Mid-Career Apr 30, 2023
    Show notes

Ambition is a phrase typically reserved for people closer to the start of their career.
But today we're talking about what ambition actually looks like at mid-life.
Because while we might still enjoy what we do, the truth is at mid-career we have a more complicated life.
That are many things vying for our attention.
And most of us have to figure out a way to balance the demands of our life with the demands of a career that is at or approaching it's peak.
At the same time, mid-career is also a time when our perspective is starting to shift.
We realize that the road in front of us is finite.
And we become more aware of wanting to spend our remaining time doing things that matter to us.
Things that might look very different from what we're doing right now.
So today we're talking about how to think about what you want now.
How you're feeling everyday in your current role.
And we're discussing the benefit of exploring possibilities for your future that might look very different from your life today.
I offer questions to ask yourself as it relates to where you are and where you want to go.
So you ensure the time remaining in your career is time you'll spend doing something you love.
Ambition is not a topic reserved for the young.
Mid-life is a time to reignite that fire in your belly so you recalibrate and re-fire into a very meaningful next act.
    Give the episode a listen.
Then share it with a friend.

Ep 123: Reinvention at Mid Career Apr 22, 2023
    Show notes

    Today we're talking about reinvention.
Not through the lens of just changing the outer façade of our life.
But through the lens of true transformation, which is, changing how we see ourselves.
Because when we change how we see ourselves, we change what's possible for us.
We start to show up in the world in a new way.
We address the challenges we encounter in a new way.
We see new possibilities for ourselves.
Reinvention is something many of us fantasize about when we get to mid-life.
We long for it and yet, we wonder if it's possible to re-imagine our life.
We wonder if we're just too set in the way we've always been.
We fear blowing up our existing ways of being to step into a new world that's unfamiliar.
    It's exciting to think about.
    But a little scary too.
So in today's episode, we're talking reinvention at mid-career and mid-life.
And I'm sharing six ways to go about it.
Whether it's something you wonder about casually, or whether it's something you feel compelled to try because you're just not willing to settle for the life you have any longer, this episode is worth checking out.
It's worth it to at least consider reinvention.
To try on that change you're dreaming of like as you would a designer suit you've been admiring.
    To see how it fits.
To see if it's something you want.
Reinvention can be a fun exercise that's about exploring possibilities.
And you're never too old, too set in your ways and it's never too late to give something entirely new a try.
So, give the episode a listen.
Then share it with a friend.

Ep 122: Resilience at Mid Career Apr 15, 2023
    Show notes

Resilience is the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties.
    It's about being mentally tough.
That's something we need at any age.
    But particularly at midlife.
Because midlife is when we're kind of getting it from all sides.
We're at the peak of our career.
We might still have our children at home.
Or we might be dealing with children leaving the nest.
We might also be dealing with aging parents.
It's also the time of life when we can have more pressing financial problems.
    Or health problems.
Bottom line, midlife is probably the time when we'll most need to be resilient.
Many of us think that we're either resilient or we're not.
But the truth is, resilience is a muscle.
It's a learned way of being.
Some of us acquire resilience skills in our youth by weathering challenging experiences.
Or perhaps by participating in team sports.
But resilience can be learned at any age.
It's a way of thinking, feeling and behaving that helps you to cope.
    And bounce back.
Believing that you're better for having had the (difficult) experience.
And confident in the knowledge you have what it takes now to face that situation next time.
This is important. Not just at midlife but at any age.
And this is what we're talking about on this week's podcast.
Give it a listen. Then share it with a friend.

Ep 121: The Change Curve: Learning to Roll with Life's Changes Apr 09, 2023
    Show notes

If change is inevitable and continual, how come most of us find it so challenging?
Since it's something we all deal with everyday from the day we're born, you'd think we'd all be Masters in rolling with change - especially by the time we get to mid career or mid life.
    But we're not.
    Actually it's the opposite.
Most of us have an adversarial relationship with change.
We deny it's happening (for as long as we can).
We resist and vilify it (as if that's going to "change" anything that's going on).
Until finally we realize it's inevitable, at which point we (begrudgingly) accept it.
This paradigm shows up everywhere in our life - career, home, relationships, culture, technology, the economy...you name it.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
There's actually a thing called The Change Curve.
I was lucky enough to learn this early in my career from a very wise boss and mentor.
And it's helped me not only with the leadership roles I've held in business.
But it's also helped me roll with some of the tougher work and life hands I've been dealt over the years (to put it in poker terms).
When we let our brains run the show on autopilot, we humans will do all kinds of crazy things to try to deny or stop the changes that are happening (at least the ones we don't like).
But the truth is, denial and resistance never work because the changes that are going to happen are, well, going to happen.
    There's a better way.
    Instead of denial or resistance...
What if you learned how to deal with change proactively?
What if you learned to accept it more quickly?
What if you learned to instantly look for the possibilities something new might present, instead of wasting time denying or resisting it?
What if you could proactively find the best ways to deal with it in your own life?
The great news is, you can.
You can become a master at dealing with change.
And it's an invaluable thing to know when you're responsible for leading a team, organization or business.
    The change curve.
Give it a listen. Then share it with a friend.

Ep 120: The Value of Wanting (Loving) What You Have Even When You're Pursuing More Apr 02, 2023
    Show notes

It's so easy to get caught up in wanting something more or different.
    More success.
    More money.
    A better relationship.
    A better job.
    It's natural.
It's how our human brains are wired.
Especially American human brains. But it's probably a global thing.
And there's nothing wrong with wanting more out of life.
After all, that's kinda what my business and podcast are all about.
The problem though is when the pursuit of something more or different causes you to discount where you are.
    To devalue what you've achieved.
    To diminish who you've become.
To discount the things you already have.
And this happens when you dismiss the things you have and see them as imperfect because you're focusing on the value or perfection of the new dream you're pursuing.
Wanting to be the best version of you, to see what you're capable of doing is a beautiful thing.
But the key is to do that from a place of fully appreciating and valuing and being grateful for what you already have.
To actually love the things you've achieved and acquired and possess while at the same time allowing yourself to passionately pursue something more.
When you love what you have while going after what you want next, it takes the desperation out of the pursuit.
    The pursuit becomes about actualization.
The pursuit isn't about fixing something that's wrong or broken or less than it should be.
And it isn't about filling yourself up or making yourself happy by getting the new thing.
The pursuit of the new thing just becomes about seeing what's possible for yourself.
To see what you're capable of.
And doing that from a place where you're already happy and content with where you're at and what you already have.
Even if where you're at is less than perfect.
When we learn to appreciate *here* and the lessons we learned that got us here, we get to feel that sense of satisfaction and actualization right now.
    Right where we are.
With all the things in our life we already have.
And that's beautiful way to live.

    Ep 119: Dealing with Other People's Opinions (#2 of 2) Mar 26, 2023
    Show notes

People are going to have opinions about us.
    About who we are.
    About what we're doing.
About what they think and feel about that.
And in our career or business, this can become a distraction.
Certainly we need to present ourselves to our stakeholders and communities in a way that isn't off-putting or offensive. In a way that is sensitive to others.
But if we're not careful, we can become too fixated on what other people think about us.
And when we do that, it holds us back.
It keeps us from putting ourselves out there.
It keep us from speaking up in the meeting.
It keep us from saying what we really think or from doing what we really want to do.
And here's the real truth of it.
When we modify our behavior to try to influence how or what people think of us, it never works.
People are going to have their opinions no matter what.
So my advice is to shift your focus from other people's opinions to yourself.
    On what you think.
On what you want to do.
    And go do that.
Let other people think what they will.
Let them be wrong (or right) about you.
And let it not matter which way it goes.
That's what we're talking on the podcast.
Give the episode a listen. Then share it with a friend.

    Ep 118: Dealing with Other People's Actions (#1 of 2) Mar 19, 2023
    Show notes

    Sometimes people don't make sense.
They can commit to something and then not follow through.
They can say they want one thing and then do something completely opposite.
I think we're all guilty of this at times.
It's about our human brain and the reality of what happens if it goes unmanaged.
Sometimes we'll do things that don't make sense.
Which means the other people in that scenario are left trying to figure it out.
    And it can be confounding.
This is something that can happen in any part of our life.
    In the business we run.
    In our corporate life.
    Or in our relationships.
So on today's episode, we're talking about what to do if you find yourself in a place where other people aren't following through in some way with something you agreed to do.
And how to avoid getting stuck in an unhelpful dynamic where you're trying to control or negotiate or influence the other person into "seeing the light" or changing their behavior.
    Because that never works.
We all know this intellectually, but I know from very painful, personal experience that it's very easy to forget.
So today I'm sharing six steps to follow when you find yourself in a situation like that so you can get unstuck and moving forward again.
This will help with any situations in your career or your life.
Give the episode a listen. Then share it with a friend.

Ep 117: Six Ways to Manage Through a Crisis Mar 12, 2023
    Show notes

I recently lost both of my parents within a matter of months.
This happened after nearly a year where I (and my siblings) provided long-term care to my parents.
Which required me to be halfway across the country one week of each month.
Which started just after I began a new job. In a new Industry. In a hybrid work situation, requiring me to be in the office 3 days a week.
Which was happening while I was also trying to grow a business.
    It was a lot.
We can all find ourselves in times like this. Where it's like one thing happens, then another, then another.
Until it all feels like too much.
So today, I'm sharing the six things I did to manage through that crisis with my parents.
It will work no matter what you're dealing with.
    A job loss.
    An illness.
    A death.
These are six powerful ways to take back control over the emotions that pile up during times like this.
So you can show up in those times in the way you want to.
And do that in the healthiest, most powerful and productive way you can.
Give it a listen. And then share it with a friend who might be struggling.

Ep 116: The Five Types of Impostor Syndrome & the Cycle (#2 of 2) Mar 04, 2023
    Show notes

There are five types of Imposter Syndrome.
This is important to know because the first part of changing your Impostor ways is recognizing when it's happening.
So today we're building off last week's episode and we're exploring the different ways it can show up.
You might experience it one way. Or (like me) you might experience many (or even all).
Bottom line, you need to know the way it shows up for you so you can recognize it and shift it.
And lastly we discuss the six-part Impostor Cycle.
Because that's what it is. A recurring pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that starts with a trigger (typically something new that raises your profile a bit).
    This is important work.
And while my coaching practice and the CBT-based method I teach are the ultimate long-term fix for this recurring cycle, in this episode I share some very helpful 'short term fixes' that you can put into practice today.
Give the episode a listen. And then (please) share it with a friend you think might be experiencing this.
Impostor Syndrome will steal your joy and suck all the life out of your self-belief and your relationships. It's my mission to help alleviate this faulty thinking pattern from the planet.
Give it a listen. And join us next week for the webinar, where we'll go a little deeper.
