"Black Swan" Aug 08, 2024

Show notes

Our 2010 retrospective continues with our penultimate review of Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror film "Black Swan" starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey & Winona Ryder. Acting as almost a companion piece with Aronofsky's previous film, "The Wrestler" (2008), the film examines the demands of perfection, the physical and emotional toll it takes on us, and the repression Nina experiences from her overbearing mother. It was a success at the box office, with critics, and during awards season, winning Natalie Portman the Academy Award for Best Actress. How does it hold up today? Join Josh Parham, Alyssa Christian, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the performances, writing, direction, cinematography, sound work, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy our discussion!

Insurgents take capitals, questioning the President's military control. Countering disinformation is vital, highlighting bipartisan defense of democracy. With a sense of urgency in its storytelling and taut filmmaking, the documentary film might very well be the most terrifying one you see all year. Directors Jesse Moss & Tony Gerber were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their experience making the documentary, which you can listen to below. "Trap" Aug 03, 2024

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, Giovanni Lago, Sara Clements, Josh Parham, & Tom O'Brien are reviewing the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan, "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills & Alison Pill. Shyamalan is one of the world's most polarizing yet fascinating filmmakers, and his latest is no different as it has divided audiences everywhere. Is it the taut thriller its trailers made it out to be, or is it a terribly plotted catastrophe with silly dialogue that writes itself into a trap by the time it reaches the third act? Tune in as the team discusses the writing, performances, suspense, the craziness of the third act, Shyamalan's direction, and more in their SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
