Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Daniel Howat & Brendan Hodges. Today, we're discussing the latest and final(?) film in the "Guardians Of The Galaxy" franchise from director/writer James Gunn, "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3" starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova & Sylvester Stallone. What did we think of the focus on Rocket's story, the humor, action, and performances from this beloved cast, and how Gunn uses practical effects compared to other blockbusters today? With "Ted Lasso" possibly ending after its third season, Apple TV+ watchers have wondered what feel-good show would fill the hole that series would leave behind. Well, they received their answer earlier this year when "Shrinking" premiered to positive reviews and captured viewers' hearts. Daniel Howat was fortunate to speak with many members behind the scenes of one of 2023 hottest shows, all of whom are up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards. First, we have Casting Directors Debby Romano & Brett Benner, then Cinematographer Jim Frohna, and we wrap things up with Composer Tom Howe. Be sure to check out the show if you haven't already, which is now streaming in full on Apple TV+. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Midnight In Paris" May 04, 2023

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2011 retrospective continues, and with the Cannes Film Festival right around the corner, we're reviewing two Best Picture nominees from this year that had their world premieres at the infamous international film festival. First up is Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris," starring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, and Carla Bruni. While Josh Parham, Dan Bayer and I do acknowledge Allen is a controversial figure, his Oscar-winning 2011 film could not be ignored for our retrospective as we discuss its merits and flaws and dissect it through a 2023 lens. Please tune in to hear what we thought of the story, the performances, its awards run, and more. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," & "The Iron Lady."

Interview With "Poker Face" Editor Glenn Garland May 03, 2023

Show notes

Rian Johnson's hit new show "Poker Face" premiered at the top of 2023 and instantly became a hit on Peacock with critics and audiences. The clever "case-of-the-week" murder mystery series evoked the same pleasures he brought to the "Knives Out" movies and gave Natasha Lyonne another standout role she could sink her teeth into. Editor Glenn Garland (Episodes 2, 4, and 10) was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the show, which you can listen to down below. Be sure to check out the show if you haven't already, which is now streaming in full on Peacock and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy awards. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Beef" Composer Bobby Krlic May 02, 2023

Show notes

The hit new miniseries "Beef" premiered on Netflix on April 6th and instantly earned acclaim for its direction, writing, and performances from Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. British rock star and composer Bobby Krlic, aka. "The Haxan Cloak" has worked in both film ("Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid") and television ("Snowpiercer") and was brought on to work on the miniseries' simmering, multi-faceted score. Bobby was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about his work on the miniseries, the differences between working on film and television, how the score had to pair with the miniseries' rocking soundtrack, and more! Be sure to give it a listen and check out the miniseries if you haven't already, which is now available to stream in full on Netflix and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy awards. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "White House Plumbers" Director David Mandel May 02, 2023

Show notes

HBO's new miniseries "White House Plumbers" just premiered last night and stars Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux as Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy, who were infamously responsible for the Watergate Scandal, which shook the foundation of politics in Washington and the country as a whole back in the 1970s. Director David Mandel, who directed all six episodes of the miniseries, talked with me about his work on the miniseries, how much he loves this era of history, coming up with the miniseries' visual aesthetic, working with the actors and more! Be sure to give it a listen and check out the miniseries if you haven't already, which is now airing new episodes weekly on HBO and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy awards. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Sisu" Director/Writer Jalmari Helander May 01, 2023

Show notes

"Sisu" had its world premiere in the Midnight Section of last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where it entertained everyone with its straightforward plot of an old Finnish man who, during WWII, strikes gold, encounters Nazis on his way to the bank, and vanquishes anyone who gets in his way. The film has received positive reviews and is now playing in theaters in North America from Lionsgate. Director and writer Jalmari Helander was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking about his work on the film, who would win in a fight between his badass, seemingly indestructible character, Aatami Korpi or John Wick, and more! Please take a listen, or you can watch the interview below. Thank you, and enjoy!
