Longhorn Republic: July 12, 2022 - Recruiting Update with Hudson Standish Jul 12, 2022
    Show notes

The month of June was great for the Texas Longhorns on the recruiting trail, landing 12 of their 18 overall commitments, including No. 1 overall player Arch Manning. Manning's commitment started a wave of momentum, propelling Texas to nine other commitments -- including adding two additional five-star players. The commitments shot Texas up as nigh as No. 2 in the recruiting rankings, but movement in early July has Texa settling in comfortably at No. 4 in the country. So where do we think Texas will end up in February when all of the ink is dry? To help us break down the current state of recruiting, we reached out to Hudson Standish of Horns247 to add some layers to the conversation. We discussed June's Arch Madness, what we should expect moving forward from Texas, and what it says about Steve Sarkisian's immediate future in Austin. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: July 5, 2022 - West Virginia Mountaineers Preview Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

The journey toward the 2022 Texas Longhorns' season continues with a preview of the West Virginia Mountaineers, a team that handed Texas an eight-point loss a year ago and sealed a losing season in the first year of the Steve Sarkisian era. West Virginia will look quite different from a year ago, with new coordinators on both sides of the ball and rotating talent -- both transfers in and out -- that will likely shape the season for them. Graham Harrell has a high-ceiling quarterback in JT Daniels but may not know what he has at the wide receiver position until a few weeks before the season. Defensively, WVU has to replace its top three tacklers and will take the field without one of the Stills brothers on the defense for what feels like the first time this century. So what can we expect from the Mountaineers in 2022? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Intro and Outro: Earth, Wind, Fire ( Ryan Little / CC BY-SA 4.0) Learn more about your ad choices. Longhorn Republic: June 30, 2022 - Texas Tech Preview Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

We've reached the conference portion of the 2022 Texas Longhorns seasons, so that means we get to bring on one of our favorites, Albie Shore of Tortillas and Takes to help us preview the Texas Tech Red Raiders. It's the first year under new head coach Joey McGuire, who has taken the recruiting world by storm and has tech positioned well heading into the fall. The Red Raiders return their quarterback from a year ago, but turn over at the wide receiver position and much of their defense as well. So what are expectations for the Red Raiders in 2022 and how will they build moving forward? We also dive in on the latest commitments to the 2023 class, Oklahoma State flip Billy Walton and 5* wide receiver Johntay Cook, II. Texas is now up to No. 2 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings and will continue to build into the fall. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: June 28, 2022 - Arch Madness Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, 2023 quarterback Arch Manning sent a shockwave through college football when he announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns via social media. National media, outside of the sports realm, picked up on the commitment that quickly dominated the sports news cycle. Then, within 72 hours of his commitment, Texas and the college football world saw the actual impact of the commitment, with Texas adding six other commitments to the class -- including a second 5* player from Louisiana. With the additions, Texas jumped from the double-digits in the overall class rankings to No. 3 overall and became one of just four schools nationally to have multiple five-star players committed. What does this mean for Texas and the 2023 class? How does this impact the players already on campus? And what does it mean for Steve Sarkisian's future in Austin? Longhorn Republic: June 23, 2022 - Previewing Texas football with Fozzy Whittaker Jun 23, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns are heading toward the 2022 football season and we had the opportunity to sit down with former Texas running back Fozzy Whittaker, who has spent the last four seasons as an analyst on the Longhorn Network after finishing his NFL career. Fozzy was a member of the team from 2008-2011, playing a role in the 2009 run at a national championship. We ask Fozzy what he thinks it's going to take to get Texas back to championship caliber, what are his biggest questions for the 2022 season, and who he has his eye on for the upcoming campaign. Because it's the Longhorn Republic, we also have some fun and dive in on which of his former teammates would have made a great WWE superstar and his dream NIL deal. Longhorn Republic: June 21, 2022 - 0fer in Omaha and UTSA Preview Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns made it back to Omaha but didn't spend much time there, leaving after losing their first two games against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Texas A&M Aggies. Both Texas starters struggled, while the offense failed to capitalize on baserunners -- which is a losing prospect in any environment. A day after the season ends, the coaching staff is already undergoing changes, with head coach David Pierce moving on from Sean Allen in an effort to fix some of the pitching issues. What do we make of this up-and-down season and will the coaching change yield any dividends? We then welcome on Jared Kalmus of the Alamodome Audible podcast to help us preview the UTSA Roadrunners. Head coach Jeff Traylor is entering his third season, coming off of a 12-1 campaign, hoping to maintain that success as the Roadrunners deal with replacing some key contributors on both sides of the ball. Longhorn Republic: June 16, 2022 - Previewing the Alabama Crimson Tide Jun 16, 2022
    Show notes

As we inch closer and closer to the Texas Longhorns’ kickoff, we continue our summer previews with the marquee non-conference matchup, the Alabama Crimson Tide. The newly sold-out game will mark the first time the two teams have squared off since the National Championship game that seemingly set both programs on opposite trajectories. Alabama has been the class of college football for the last 12 seasons, with six national championships and four Heisman Trophy winners — including current quarterback Bryce Young. Alabama comes to town Week 2 to serve as a reunion for Steve Sarkisian and Nick Saban, with Sark squaring off against his former boss after helping lead them to their most recent national championship. Texas also features three players that made the jump to Austin from Tuscaloosa with Keilan Robinson joining a year ago, while Jahleel Billingsly and Agiye Hall joining for the 2022 season. So what should we expect from the juggernaut of college football, hoping to march through Austin on their way to the College Football Playoff? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: June 13, 2022 - Heading Back to Omaha Jun 14, 2022
    Show notes

In spite of a Friday afternoon scare, the Texas Longhorns are heading back to Omaha for the Men's College World Series -- trip No. 38 in the 75-year history of the event. Texas, in spite of troubles in the regular season, is exactly where everyone expected them to be, it just took a bit of a different journey to get there. Now they sit in a bracket with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who knocked off top-ranked Tennessee, as well as a pair of rivals -- the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas A&M Aggies. Texas also brought home a pair of second-place finishes at the track and field national championships, giving coach Edrick Floréal his fourth top-two finish in three seasons at the helm for the Longhorns as he continues to build that program back. Longhorn Republic: June 9, 2022 - ULM Preview Jun 09, 2022
    Show notes

We are inching ever closer to the start of the 2022 football season, which means we are starting our week-by-week breakdowns of the Texas Longhorns schedule. With 86 days left before kickoff, we start with the first opponent on the schedule, the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks, who are coming off of what could be considered a resurgent season despite the 4-8 record. Under new head coach Terry Bowden, the Warhawks showed immediate improvement from the 2020 pandemic season, a year in which they played 10 games and never held a lead. That season ended the tenure of Matt Viator and ushered in the Bowden era. After one year, Bowden had to reshuffle his coaching staff as offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez bolted for Jacksonville State and took much of the coaching staff with him. Bowden opted to bring back a name familiar with ULM to fill the void, former ULM offensive coordinator Matt Kubic. Kubic spent four years as the Warhawks' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, during which the Warhawks’ offense helped lead them to a 9-4 record. Longhorn Republic: June 7, 2022 - Big Weekend on the Diamond Jun 07, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns took care of business in both the Austin Regional and in Oklahoma City, continuing what is turning out to be a very successful semester for the spring sports. While there were fireworks in several other regionals, the baseball team seemingly cruised to a super regional berth, with a three-run win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs sandwiched between two lopsided wins over the Air Force Falcons. The Longhorns got quality starts from their top two starters, with Pete Hansen and Lucas Gordon giving up just four runs in their starts, while the Longhorns scored 26 runs over the weekend. The softball team's weekend was a little more dramatic than the baseball team, but they still managed to come out on top and become the first team in school history to reach the WCWS finals. After knocking off Oklahoma State twice on Monday, the Longhorns now face the Oklahoma Sooners - who have dropped just three games all season. However, one of those three was to Texas, snapping their winning streak. With all of that success, Texas is now in prime position to claim its second-consecutive Director's Cup, given to the top athletic department in the country. We welcome back Brett Wilkinson to dive in on how the math favors Texas as the academic year draws to a close. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook.
