Longhorn Republic: August 16, 2022 - Fall Update and DL Preview Aug 16, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns nearly made it through the offseason without the typical bad news, but seemingly saved it up for one weekend. After transfer wide receiver Agiye Hall's arrest for misdemeanor vandalism, the Longhorns saw two key pieces go down with season-ending injuries. Offensive lineman Junior Angilau and wide receiver Isaiah Neyor will both miss the entirety of the 2022 season with non-contact knee injuries, highlighting an injury report that featured starters and key contributors on both sides of the ball. Now begins the process of re-examining our expectations for the 2022 season and what would mean success for Texas. We also dive in on the Longhorns' defensive line, trying to identify who can step up as the key contributor to a unit that needs a star to emerge. Longhorn Republic: August 11, 2022 - TCU Preview Aug 11, 2022
    Show notes

We continue working through the Texas Longhorns' schedule and enter the final three games, starting with the TCU Horned Frogs. For the first time in two decades, the Horned Frogs opened fall camp without Gary Patterson on the coaching staff. In his place is Sonny Dykes, after moving across town from SMU and bringing much of the staff and recruiting class with him. The philosophies from years past will obviously change, shifting from a defensive-minded head coach to one that spent time learning under Mike Leach as a position coach and co-offensive coordinator. Similarly, TCU is shifting from the four-man fronts they played for years under Patterson to a 3-3-5 alignment under Joe Gillespie. With all of that change happening, TCU brings back significant talent from a year ago, with 80% of last year's contributors returning. That puts them second in the conference behind the Kansas Jayhawks. So what are the expectations for the newly-redesigned Horned Frogs? Longhorn Republic: August 9, 2022 - Spring Practice and OL Preview Aug 09, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns are officially starting practice and the pads come on as of Tuesday, which means we are rapidly moving toward separation in camp. Steve Sarkisian spoke to the media Monday ahead of the first full-pads practice, updating the public on where he thinks the team stands heading into the next critical phase of preparation. How do his thoughts on the quarterbacks, offensive line, and more compare to the tone during his first fall? We also continue our group-by-group previews with the offensive line. Texas has some experienced players in the trenches, but will once again need to call on some less-experienced linemen to fill in the gaps. Will it be one of the new freshmen to the squad or will an older player managed to step in and hold a spot? Longhorn Republic: August 4, 2022 - Kansas State Wildcats Preview Aug 04, 2022
    Show notes

We've reached week nine of the Texas Longhorns' 2022 season, bringing us to the Kansas State Wildcats. It's year four of the Chris Klieman era and KSU has high hopes after its second 8-5 season of the post-Bill Snyder era. They bring in Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez, who will operate the offense under new offensive coordinator Collin Klien. As an interim, Klien led the Wildcats to a massive 42-20 win over the LSU Tigers in the Texas Bowl, averaging 7.13 yards per play to close the season. Running back Deuce Vaughn, one of two unanimous preseason All-Conference players, returns for another year to hopefully ease the tension on his OC and quarterback, while trying to notch another 2,000-yard season. Defensively, the Wildcats bring back six starters from a defense that allowed 21 points per game and 5.37 yards per play but must replace two key pieces in Cody Fletcher and Ross Elder, who finished second and third on the team in tackles. Who will replace that production and how can the defense take a step forward in 2022? Longhorn Republic: August 2, 2022 - Looking at the Rebuilt WR Room Aug 02, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns were in need of some depth and talent in the wide receiver room, to help supplement the players already in the room. Coming in to help Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, last year's top receivers, were Isaiah Neyor, Agiye Hall, and Tarique Milton from the transfer portal, as well as the likely emergence of Brennen Thompson into the mix. Texas has seemingly raised the floor for the receivers, but what does that mean for the guys already on campus? What will the workload look like between the top receivers on the team? We also take time to dive into the coaching changes on the hardwood, as well as players coming and going from the baseball and softball teams. Longhorn Republic: July 28, 2022 - Oklahoma State Preview Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

The Texas Longhorns run the gauntlet to start the regular season, going eight games without a bye week. They end that run against a team likely to be in contention for a conference championship, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, a team that erased a double-digit lead a year ago to beat the Longhorns in Austin. The Cowboys lost several key pieces of a team that was a play away from a conference championship a year ago but has plenty of talent to reload and make another run. Offensively, the Cowboys lost their two top producers to the NFL, but return Spencer Sanders, a four-year starter who was just named the preseason first-team All-Big 12 quarterback. Defensively, Oklahoma State lost its defensive coordinator, as well as its top five tacklers, but does return one of the top pass rushers in the conference, sophomore Collin Oliver, who finished third in the conference in sacks a year ago. Rebuilding the back end of the defense may prove to be much easier with the elite front they should field in 2022. Longhorn Republic: July 25, 2022 - Previewing the Running Backs Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

It's pretty easy to say that the biggest strength the Texas Longhorns possess offensively is the parade of talent housed in the running backs room. The group is headlined by Bijan Robinson, who fully stepped into his talent a year ago and emerged as one of the top running backs in the country. In the second year under Steve Sarkisian, Robinson has the opportunity to solidify himself as the top RB in the nation and help Texas achieve its goals in 2022. Helping carry the load is senior Roschon Johnson, looking to close out his Longhorn career on a high note, after changing positions as a freshman to help out the team. We talk realistic expectations for the group, what should the workload be to ensure fresh legs, and how does this set them up for 2023 and beyond? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: July 21, 2022 - Iowa State Preview Jul 21, 2022
    Show notes

We continue our trek through the Texas Longhorns' 2022 schedule, this time diving in on the Iowa State Cyclones. Texas has no end of trouble with Iowa State in recent memory, dropping three straight to the Cyclones -- including a trip to the woodshed last year in Ames. But the 2022 Cyclones are looking for answers of their own after losing the long-time core of their offense, quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Breece Hall, and a pair of NFL tight ends. What can we expect from Iowa State in 2022? Are they rebuilding or reloading? Defensively, Iowa State has to replace its four top tacklers from a year ago, but defensive guru Jon Heacock returns one of the best pass rushers in the country in Will McDonald. What will the renowned defensive mind cook up for the Cyclones in 2022 to keep offenses on their toes? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: July 19, 2022 - Big 12 Media Days and QB Preview Jul 19, 2022
    Show notes

THe Texas Longhorns joined the rest of the Big 12 in Arlington for the annual gathering of coaches, players and press to preview the upcoming football season. While Oklahoma Sooners' coach Brent Venables struggled to land his metaphors, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was forced to answer questions about the outgoing teams. The Texas contingent feels that Texas made the right choices in recruiting, especially up-front while providing minimal insight into the quarterback race between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers. We also stop and dive in on the quarterbacks and the forthcoming conclusion of the quarterback battle. Which quarterback do we think starts the season as QB1 and do we think they'll hold the spot through the season? What help will they need from the rest of their teammates? And ultimately, how will it impact the on-field production. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. Longhorn Republic: July 13, 2022 - Oklahoma Sooners Preview Jul 14, 2022
    Show notes

We continue our journey through the Texas Longhorns' schedule, reaching the Red River Showdown and the Oklahoma Sooners. It's a new era in Norman, with Brent Venables taking over for Lincoln Riley, who dramatically left for the USC Trojans - taking a bit of talent with him. Joining Venables is offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, coming off of two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, and his former all-conference quarterback Dillon Gabriel at the helm. Venables and defensive coordinator Todd Bates inherit a defense that needs to replace NFL talent in the trenches but will have an opportunity to reverse a negative trend under former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. To help us dive in on the Sooners, we welcome Kamiar Mehrabian of Crimson and Cream Machine to help us dive in on OU. Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook.
