    In this episode:

    • What exactly is hyperpigmentation of the skin?
    • Is there something you can do to, number one, reduce the ones that you have, and then stop the development or progression of other sun spots?
    • Different options that help with hyperpigmentation.

    Quotes

“Sun-related spots, freckles, age spots, sun spots, liver spots: Technically they're many, many names for the same thing.” [3:55]

“Sun spots are caused by ultraviolet radiation, by ultraviolet exposure to your skin. You are more likely to get sun spots in areas where your skin is exposed.” [5:37]

111: What is Geographic Tongue? (Is It a Sign of Psoriasis?) Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

Have you ever heard of Geographic Tongue?

It certainly sounds strange, but bear with me because it's actually got some interesting connections to psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Some believe that Geographic Tongue (GT) is a sign of psoriasis in the mouth.

In today's episode, I wanted to share with you what GT is, what it means if you have psoriasis, and why it's important NOT to ignore it!

Part of the reason I say you shouldn't ignore it is that I believe your body communicates with you through signs and symptoms. If you've got an issue like this, your body is trying to say something.

Here's why I think Geographic Tongue is an important clue and how to find out if you have it!

    In this episode:

    • What is Geographic Tongue + its connection to Psoriasis
    • Does everyone with psoriasis get GT?
    • Triggers, medication + conditions associated with GT
    • Can GT be a sign of nutrient deficiencies?
    • Why it would be good to get an oral exam if you’ve got psoriasis

    Quotes:

Some sites call Geographic Tongue “psoriasis of the tongue”, but that might not be the case! Not everyone with psoriasis has GT though there is a high association between the two.

The potential for GT to be a sign of nutrient deficiencies underscores why this isn’t something to just blow off.

110: Missing Links Between Your Little One's Skin Rashes & Mom's Health w/ Jennifer Brand, MS, CNS Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

Seeing a baby struggle with chronic skin rashes is heartbreaking. Today's guest is here to talk about how mom's health has the potential to impact her baby's skin health.

My guest today, Jennifer Brand, is an integrative and clinical nutritionist with a Master's degree in public health, a Master's degree in nutrition, and she’s a Certified Nutrition Specialist.

She specializes in childhood skin rashes (eczema, psoriasis, tinea versicolor, hives, acne, vitiligo, and others), food allergies and sensitivities, and gut problems.

Jennifer’s own struggle with gut problems, and her father’s battle with psoriasis turned psoriatic arthritis left her frustrated with conventional medicine. She knows first hand that a different approach is needed:

    • An approach that doesn’t remove more foods from the diet. Your body runs off of nutrients from foods you eat. When they are missing, imbalances develop and symptoms and health problems follow.
    • An approach that doesn’t include stronger prescription steroid creams. No one has skin rashes because of a steroid cream deficiency!

Jennifer is a relentless detective putting her strong knowledge of nutritional biochemistry to work for you, to identify what’s driving symptoms and health problems in order to address the root cause of them.

Jennifer’s work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals and Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations at venues such as Casa Colina Hospital in Pomona California.

Join us as we discuss the link between a baby's skin rashes and the health of their mother.

Have you ever wondered if your health could have impacted your little one's skin rashes? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • No guilt or finger-pointing
    • What's the deal with an infant's microbiome compared to an adult, especially in terms of skin rash issues?
    • Effective testing for little ones
    • Can breast milk pass things that could affect a baby's skin?

    Quotes

“A gut microbiome is not mature until a child is about two to three years old.” [4:00]

“I started finding some research that certain gut bugs can be passed through breast milk. H. pylori is one of them.” [10:50]

109: Eczema Triggered By Hidden Infections [CASE REPORT] Jan 28, 2020
    Show notes

Ever feel like you've done everything and STILL aren't getting answers about your eczema (or other skin rashes)?

    You're not alone.

Even I felt like my dermatologist should have better answers than just use another steroid cream and "this is probably genetic". I really felt like the answers that I got weren't real answers.

At a certain point, I realized that I'd rather someone level with me and say "I don't know what's causing your eczema" rather than just blaming things that felt out of my control.

And that's how one of my clients felt as he neared the point of feeling very hopeless. He's tried both conventional and holistic solutions without getting pretty much anywhere.

Fortunately, we crossed paths and were able to uncover a major root cause that has gotten him some great results!

All it took was asking the right questions so that we knew where to dig!

    In this episode:

    • Chad's challenging eczema story
    • Why a really in-depth case history was crucial to finding answers
    • How we chose testing that help get to Chad's root causes
    • Why an elimination diet didn't help at all even though prior testing said he had many sensitivities
    • What Chad's eczema is like now after working on his root cause

    Quotes:

"One crucial step in my process is doing an incredibly thorough case history. I often ask questions that no one has ever asked before. All to tell me where we need to dig!"

"If you've ever visited a third world country, it can be a red flag... even if you didn't get sick. It's possible that you picked something up that didn't make you sick enough to even consider it a trigger for your rashes."

CBD is all the rage at the moment. My guest is back to discuss new research on CBD and its potential for those of us with skin rashes.

My guest today, Lily Mazzarella, MS, CNS, is an herbalist, nutritionist, educator and writer.

She is the owner of Farmacopia, a modern apothecary and integrative practice in Santa Rosa, CA. Lily is the formulator and creator of Farmacopia’s line of Signature Tinctures, Adaptogen Powders and Superfoods, and co-founder and formulator of Reishi Roast Original and Reishi Roast Elixir.

Join us as we discuss new research on CBD for skin rashes.

Have you used CBD or echinacea for your skin rashes? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • When did Lily's interest in CBD start?
    • Oral vs. topical use of CBD
    • All about echinacea
    • Red-flag ingredients for those with skin rashes
    • How to find good quality CBD products
    • Can the skin become addicted to CBD?

    Quotes

“Staph is present on 90% of people with eczema and is a complicating factor on eczema lesions with itch and is one of the things that causes the oozing and the crusting and all that stuff.” [12:11]

“CBD shows a lot of promise for regulating the osteocytes and turning down, again, not turning it off, not making your skin dry, but turning down inflammatory sebum production that's driven by testosterone and inflammatory fats, so poor quality fats in the diet.” [25:57]

107: Symptoms Of A Staph Infection On Your Skin Jan 21, 2020
    Show notes

Have you ever wondered what the symptoms of a staph infection on your skin are?

I have come to discover that a lot of people really don't know what the symptoms are which can lead to delay in seeking help from your doctor.

Recently, I asked my Instagram community if they knew what to look for if you're having a flare and it might be staph.

I was surprised to discover that 98% wanted me to talk more about staph infections and weren't clear on what the symptoms are.

And I've found this issue with clients who desperately manage a flare. But because they don't know the symptoms of a staph infection on the skin, they don't even consider it as an option.

Failure to identify a staph infection can lead to a potentially unnecessary period of suffering.

That's why I decided to share what you should look out for.

Because I'm not a doctor, this is certainly not intended to help you diagnose a staph infection. It's my hope that it will help you know when to see your doctor rather than trying to just deal with it on your own.

    In this episode:

    • Client story about staph infection
    • Is it worth it to blend alternative and conventional approaches?
    • 98% of my audience didn't know the symptoms of a skin staph infection
    • Signs of a Staph infection you need to be aware of
    • Are Staph infections only a concern for people with Eczema?

    Quotes:

Staph infections can happen to anyone and that means that they are not an eczema-specific problem! I've worked with psoriasis clients who are struggling with staph as well.

Burning skin and a deep, awful itch are two key symptoms during a flare that could spell the difference between a rash flare and a staph infection.

105: Can Melatonin Help Itchy Skin (So You Can Sleep)? Jan 14, 2020
    Show notes

Wishing you could get a better night’s sleep without waking up all itchy?

When sleep is compromised (or nonexistent) night after night, it can feel like you’ll never catch up. The cumulative effect of sleepless nights is maddening.

Clients in my clinical practice often ask me “How can I sleep better?”

The truth is, there’s not one simple answer to that question. Ultimately you have to figure out what’s causing the issue in the first place.

But some supplemental aides like melatonin might be helpful for some.

I’ve repeatedly seen studies mention lower nightly melatonin levels in those with eczema. And how the use of the supplement could be helpful!

Let’s dive in together to see if melatonin could be helpful for you.

    In this episode:

    • What is melatonin and can it be helpful for someone struggling with itchy eczema?
    • Melatonin production tends to be low in eczema patients
    • Food sources of melatonin (more than just tart cherries)
    • How to naturally boost melatonin production
    • Thoughts on supplementing with melatonin to avoid waking up groggy
    • Who shouldn’t take melatonin

    Quotes:

“33 to 87.1% of adults” and “83% of children with eczema” are dealing with some sort of sleep disturbance or difficulty staying asleep.

Melatonin is broken down by your liver specifically in Phase 1 of liver detoxification by the CYP1A2 enzyme (along with some others) to get it out of your system.

104: Topical B12 For Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Peter Lio Jan 09, 2020
    Show notes

For those of us with chronic skin rashes, topical steroid creams are usually the first thing prescribed. But many of us aren't given any guidelines for the safe use of these topicals, or informed about alternative treatments we can utilize.

My guest today is Dr. Peter Lio. Dr. Lio is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture.

Dr. Lio has written a textbook on Integrative Dermatology and has published over 100 papers.

Join us as we discuss the safe use of topical steroid creams, topical steroid withdrawal, and the use of topical B12 for skin rashes.

Have you tried topical B12 for skin rashes? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • How should people use topical steroid creams?
    • What is Topical Steroid Withdrawal?
    • Using topical steroids on sensitive spots (e.g. eyelids)
    • How do products like Eucrisa differ from topical steroid creams?
    • What is PEA (and could it be good for your skin)?
    • Using Topical B12 for skin rashes

    Quotes

“When you put topical steroids on, your blood vessels constrict. And if you keep doing that, then they kind of rebound and dilate, which is part of why we think people with TSW are bright red all the time. Their blood vessels are kind of broken from that.” [17:50]

“B12 is crimson red as a powder and when put in this white base, it becomes pink. So we call it pink magic. And we've had it in our office for many years. And lots of patients like it. Again, it's got very modest effect, but it is very soothing.” [22:47]

103: Hidradenitis Suppurativa: The Tip That Stopped My Flares Jan 07, 2020
    Show notes

If you've ever heard of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, then you know exactly how awful this condition is.

For me, I initially thought it was some sort of cancer because of the painful, swollen, lump I developing in my armpit.

As I did more research, I came to realize that even now... a decade later... not much is known about what causes HS.

But if you have it, this issue can feel like a wrecking ball smashing into your life!

Fortunately, I got a tip from a colleague that changed everything for me and put my Hidradenitis Suppurativa into remission.

In the spirit of sharing, I want to pass along this tip to you so in the event that it could also be helpful for you. I'm not guaranteeing that it will work for every case, but if it helps even one person, then it makes sharing this worth it.

    In this episode:

    • What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa? (also known as HS)
    • My experience living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa
    • What areas are impacted by HS flares?
    • Conventional + limited alternative treatment options
    • What put my HS into remission (thanks to a tip that was my game changer)

    Quotes:

Doctors still don't know what drives Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Inflammation plays a role and may be considered a form of auto-inflammation.

The Mayo Clinic lists armpits, groin, buttocks, and, breasts as known "hot spot" areas. But it can appear in other areas, even on your face!
