090: Learning To Create Boundaries & Ditch Perfectionism w/ Kelli Tennant Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

Skin conditions can lead to feelings of powerlessness. In this conversation, I hope we can shift that.

My guest today is Kelli Tennant, Host and Founder of Ceremony Wellness. She helps women heal deeply through Functional medicine, Ayurveda and spiritual development.

As an advocate for women, Kelli educates on the importance of speaking up, choosing yourself and living authentic in every aspect of life.

Join us as we discuss the healing journey, and how to advocate for ourselves.

Have you learned how to advocate for yourself? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • What you can learn through a healing journey
    • Advocating for yourself (especially when you're used to pleasing everyone else)
    • Detoxing products and relationships to free yourself from those shackles
    • Learning how to say no (and how doing so can dramatically improve your life)

    Quotes

“My body was trying to tell me to stop, to stop living for other people, to stop living inauthentically, to stop taking care of everyone else before myself, to stop putting everyone else's priorities and needs and ideas of what this world and this life is supposed to be like ahead of my own.” [2:58]

“I do believe in working hard and trying to reach your goals and pursue your dreams, but that's different than trying to pursue perfection. Those are very different things. And once you're able to realize I am enough as I am, I am worthy of all the things that I want and desire, then you can start pursuing your goals and your dreams the way you're really meant to, not in this rat race, hamster wheel mentality that many of us are raised in.” [8:27]

089: Overcoming Food Fear Triggering Skin Rashes Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

“How do I start reintroducing foods that I’ve eliminated without triggering a flare?”

It’s a great question and one that my community has asked me repeatedly to address. The problem is that by blaming diet over and over — food fear is created.

And let me tell you from personal experience — food fear is very real (and awful).

Because your skin is like a sponge and requires so many nutrients, increasingly restrictive elimination diets can put you on the path to nutrient deficiencies.

And make you more socially withdrawn and food obsessive. Many can feel like a victim of food and like a constant failure (because you aren’t being strict enough).

I’d like to offer a very different perspective on food fear. So let’s breakdown how many are ending up with food fear and some practical steps to start walking yourself out of this food restriction hole!

    In this episode:

    • How you end up with food fear from eliminating food from your diet
    • What happened when Jodi solely blamed food for her rashes
    • What if it’s not food that’s triggering rashes (but something else)?
    • Are food sensitivity tests helpful (or cause more harm)?
    • My recommendations to begin reintroducing foods

    Quotes:

Thinking that diet is the only thing you can change to improve your skin is a very dangerous and shortsighted idea.

The book industry has focused so much on empowering people around elimination diets that it has inadvertently misled them to believe that the thing that will fix their skin is food. And that ultimately food is the enemy.

088: Can Red Light Therapy Help Skin Rash Conditions? w/ Ari Whitten Nov 14, 2019
    Show notes

Modern human beings spend the overwhelming majority of our time indoors. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend around 90% of our lives inside. That, combined with our fear of spending too much time in the sun, has led many of us to be deficient in wavelengths of light that are actually incredibly beneficial to our health.

Ari Whitten is a best-selling author, a nutrition and lifestyle expert, and the founder of The Energy Blueprint.

He has been studying and teaching health science for over 20 years. Ari has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, and recently completed the coursework for his PhD in Clinical Psychology.

For the last five years, he’s teamed up with world-renowned scientists and physicians to develop The Energy Blueprint system, which is a powerful, evidence-based system for overcoming fatigue and increasing energy levels.

Join us as we discuss red light therapy, and its possible benefits for our skin and overall health.

Has red light therapy improved your skin health? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • What is red light, and why is it good for our cellular health?
    • Is there a skin cancer risk when using red light therapy?
    • Do we need sun exposure?
    • Where to begin.

    Quotes

“It turns out that light and specific spectrums or wavelengths of light are profoundly bioactive in humans. They influence the way ourselves and our body function.” [3:38]

“We should be getting lots of red and near-infrared light naturally through sun exposure. Since we're deficient, using some of these red and near-infrared light therapy devices helps correct that deficiency and give us this nutrient that our bodies need to function optimally.” [10:40]

087: Skin Picking Triggered By Chronic Skin Rashes Nov 12, 2019
    Show notes

If living with skin rashes weren't enough, compulsive skin picking triggered by those rashes makes everything worse.

It makes your level of shame go through the roof and can have a bunch of other unintended negative impacts on your life. This condition, known more formally as Dermatillomania, is on the OCD spectrum.

And it can cause extra damage to your skin that goes beyond what the rashes will cause.

This is a personal topic because skin picking is something that I live with daily. I considered creating an episode on this topic for a few months, but my own personal shame (that I'm working on) kept me afraid to share.

Recently, I decided that helping just one person not feel alone was more valuable than getting this vulnerable with you.

So if you're dealing with Dermatillomania (skin picking) because of your rashes, or supporting someone who is, I hope that you find this episode enlightening.

086: Allergies, Your Immune System & Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Maya Shetreat Nov 07, 2019
    Show notes

In today's world, germs are the enemy. We are constantly washing our hands, wiping down surfaces, and slathering on the hand sanitizer. But what does this over-sanitization mean for our skin and overall health?

Maya Shetreat, MD is a neurologist, herbalist, urban farmer, and author of The Dirt Cure: Healthy Food, Healthy Gut, Happy Child (Simon and Schuster, 2016), which has been translated into ten languages.

She has been featured in the New York Times, The Telegraph, NPR, Sky News, The Dr. Oz Show, and more. Dr. Maya is the founder of the Terrain Institute, where she teaches Terrain Medicine™, earth-based programs for transformational healing.

She works and studies with indigenous communities and healers in Ecuador, and is a lifelong student of ethnobotany, plant healing, and the sacred.

Has spending more time in nature improved your overall health? Let me know in the comments!

    In this episode:

    • The problem with over-sanitization
    • How antibiotics affect the gut
    • Connection between the immune system and the skin
    • Does over-sanitization as children affect us as adults?

    Quotes:

“Everything's connected in the body. And this is a thing I think that unfortunately is forgotten about by all doctors and especially by dermatologists. Dermatologists are always thinking topical. Like, what will I do topically rather than thinking that, you know, how we heal skin is from the inside out.” [5:51]

“The immune system is a remote system. So when something's activated in one place, like the gut, it can totally cause symptoms in another place like the skin.” [8:56]

“What you need for a healthy immune system, particularly in infancy and childhood but throughout life at any point in life, is you need small stressors. And that's a concept called hormesis, which is the idea that something that might be toxic in a large amount, in a very tiny amount it actually optimizes health.” [13:20]

085: Picking The Right Type of Magnesium Supplements For Your Skin Rash Protocol Nov 05, 2019
    Show notes

Magnesium supplements are probably one of the most common supplements that people take. As I shared in Part 1 of this conversation, magnesium is critical for over 300 biochemical reactions in your body!

It is important to convert Vitamin D to its active form.

It also activates ATP (your body's energy currency) that I've discussed in a previous episode HERE.

So yes, magnesium is critical to the proper functioning of your body. It's one of the most common nutrient depletions that I discover in clients.

But when it comes to picking the right form of magnesium, that's where things can get tricky!

In today's episode, I'm going to break all that down for you so you know what the best type is for you!

Or, listen on your favorite app: iTunes (Apple Podcasts) | Spotify | Stitcher | TuneIn

    In this episode:

    • 5 different types of magnesium to choose from
    • Differences between each form of magnesium (based on your symptoms)
    • The most absorbable magnesium supplements to take
    • Best test to check your magnesium levels
    • What can block magnesium absorption
    • When to avoid taking magnesium supplements

    Quotes:

There are five forms that are most commonly available on the market -- magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide, magnesium threonate and magnesium malate. The type of magnesium that you take does matter, especially if you're more diarrhea or constipation prone, or if you want to go to sleep at night.

Absorption can be hindered in cases of celiac disease and IBD. And if you have gut dysbiosis, some unfriendly bugs hanging out in your gut can essentially steal magnesium from you before it's absorbed.

083: Can Magnesium Give You A Rash? Oct 29, 2019
    Show notes

Have you ever tried spraying your skin with magnesium oil spray only to end up super itchy? Or maybe your skin feels like it burns…

Magnesium is a pretty popular supplement suggestion. And so is this topical route!

But there can be a downside to it.

So the question is… is it normal to experience this type of reaction?

And does it mean that you’re sensitive to something in the spray?

In today’s episode, I wanted to explore why you might want to avoid magnesium oil spray on rashed skin.

    In this episode:

    • Quick overview about the importance of magnesium for health
    • Why magnesium oil may not be the best option
    • What does magnesium oil mean if it burns?
    • Alternative options to magnesium oil that won’t flare your skin

    Quotes:

Magnesium is critical to the proper functioning of your body and is necessary for over 300 biochemical reactions in your body. It can help you relax and fall asleep while certain forms can have the exact opposite action during the day by waking you up.

If magnesium oil triggers what feels like a rash or a flare, you may want to stop it. Nobody really knows why magnesium oil causes itching or burning. Some people say that this reaction means you're deficient in magnesium, but there is literally no science to support that claim.

There are healthy and natural sweeteners to use instead. Today we discuss how to find the sweeteners that work for you and how you can cook with them.

    • Stevia as a natural sweetener and how you can use it in your food
    • What sugar-alcohols are and how you might be able to incorporate them into your food
    • Tips and tricks for baking with sugar alternatives

    Quotes

“Even within that natural category, there might be something that isn’t unhealthy for a healthy person. But for someone who’s really sensitive to sugars, I have to think about other factors like the glycemic index, how quickly it raises your blood-sugar.” [3:40]

“If you’re a sweets addict like I am, what you don’t want to do is bake a brownie and eat half the thing in one sitting.” [9:36]

“There are definitely recipes for out there. If you want to try any of the things you’re used to, you can find recipes for all of the standard treats that use these low-glycemic sweeteners and are good.” [14:08]
