Powerback 48: Ask for Insight — Not Permission Dec 19, 2019
    Show notes

Second-guessing yourself is one of the fastest ways to give away your power. When we’re not in alignment with ourselves, we over-analyze, overthink, and play out every possible scenario at 2 am (spoiler alert, they’re not usually great endings).
So what do we do? We look for validation. We’ll ask every Tom, Dick, and Harry what they think. And by the time we get back to ourselves, we have a watered-down version of what we set out to do.

It’s ok to ask for insight — from trusted sources — but you don’t need permission to do the thing that’s ringing true in your gut. When you’re in alignment with yourself and can get quiet to really feel the answer out, you’ll find that it’s already inside of you, you just need to listen to it.

48: Resetting Your Life with Kate Blake Dec 17, 2019
    Show notes

Earlier this year I was feeling pretty darn sorry for myself and came across a free webinar from a lady named Kate Blake. I opted in and quickly wondered how in the hell she knew me. Tired, wore down, ambitious but struggling — basically stuck in my own way with old behaviors and patterns. She’s the driving force behind Liberation Week at Worx, and the positive ripple just keeps going.
I’m beyond stoked to bring Kate to YOU. She’s not only a wealth of knowledge, but she’s real and keeps things real. Somehow she has a magical way of calming all of the crazy-talk in my head by reminding me of the basics. She even schooled me a little in this episode, and I loved every second of it.
We’re all buried by all the “shoulds” in our lives: I should do more; I should have more time; I should go to that event; I should be thinner. We’ll pour everything we have into everyone around us, yet leave ourselves thin, overwhelmed, and exhausted. Whatever is showing up for you on the outside is a reflection of how you’re treating yourself on the inside. (Insert long pause of realization…)
Energy only becomes matter when you give it focus. Your mindset is everything and resetting your life starts with embracing your emotional side. Your belief has to be stronger than your fear because when you flip the table and rewrite the script, you can quite literally have and do anything you set out to do.
This episode is near and dear to my heart. I hope you love it as much as I love Kate, lol.

Powerback 47: Evaluate and Minimize Your Commitments Dec 12, 2019
    Show notes

    Join my organization!
You’re so talented, can you help me?
I love what you’re doing, could you donate?

These are all amazing compliments but are also a slippery slope to overcommitting yourself. A yes here and a yes there quickly add up to diluted efforts across many areas of your life. So how do you get your power back? Start by asking yourself these questions about every task, volunteer role, business and personal commitment:
    1. Is it a hell yes?
    2. Is this personally important to me?
    3. Am I growing?
    4. Is it supporting my business?
If any of these answers are NO – it’s time to take action on clearing your commitment plate.

47: Lack of Processes: How it's Holding You Back Dec 10, 2019
    Show notes

When you start a business, you’re often making things up as you go, waiting to find out if they work well or if it’s a flop and you need to find another way. From time to time you nail it on the first go and then repeat that process over and over again. When was the last time you wrote any of those golden nuggets of information down? Yeah, I thought so.
You’re part of the “I’ll remember it because I do it all the time tribe,” which is pretty common amongst us go-getters. But here’s the issue with that… If you’re the only one that knows how to do things well, then you’re the only one that will do things effectively. When your business is growing, you add on team members, outsource tasks, and lean on others to help you in many capacities. You’re probably training each one of these people over and over what your processes are, but each one is getting a slightly different version, often missing important details.
You’re also continuing to throw dry brush on fire in your own life. When the secret sauce is locked in your mind like Fort Knox, the pressure stays on YOU.
This week, we’re breaking down what processes are in the first place, how to use them, and then how to get them out of your head so you can be a better leader for your team and your business.
If you’re tired of being the only one that knows how to do things, tune into this week’s episode to learn how not having defined processes is actually holding you back.

Powerback 46: Take Care of the Annoying Task Dec 05, 2019
    Show notes

Have you ever had one of those daunting tasks, that thing you keep thinking about on a regular basis? You know it needs to be done, but you just keep saying, Oh, I'll get to it tomorrow. Oh, I'll get to it the next day. And, inevitably, tomorrow comes. And the next day comes. And the task continues to roll over.
I'm going to take you down a quick story path here, guys, because I have done this recently and I want to bring this to you so that you can prevent this unnecessary stress in your life.
So let's talk Microsoft Word. Out of the blue one day a couple of months ago, when I would open up a new document it wouldn't save as the right size. Like all of a sudden, it was like 8.75 by 10.25 or some ridiculous size. So I would go to the settings and I would choose and ask to make it regular letter size and it wouldn't change. So I had to deal with this abnormally sized document. Well, I can't use that. Right? It doesn't look right. It throws me off. So every time I wanted to have a quote-unquote normal-sized document, I would open up another document, resave it as a new name, delete out all the content, and then use it.
Now, I know this doesn't seem really big or whatever, but I use Word for a lot of different things in my business. I use it when I'm documenting questions and planning for the podcast. I'm writing content for Worx & Co. I use it for communications. I mean, I'm in Word a handful of times a week, but every time I opened it I got irritated and frustrated because why on earth, Word, would you make this ridiculous sized document? I allowed this to go on within myself for I would say probably four to six weeks.
I knew what I had to do. I was working in an outdated Microsoft Word. I couldn't tell you what year it was. I don't know why it didn't auto-update. There are a thousand reasons and questions that I'll never know, but I knew the reason and I knew it was because I went out to one of my coworkers' desks and I realized, Oh, your word and Excel icons look different than mine. They look way more updated. Shit, I know what I have to do to get rid of this problem. But to do so, I knew that I was going to have to take the time to download the programs.
I know that's not hard, but time is really precious. I was going to have to download the programs. I was going to have to re-install them, and then, inevitably (and why I put this off for so long), I had to go find the passwords because I had to log back in. And then the old documents needed converted to the new documents. And all these things started happening and I was like, see, this is why I didn't want to deal with this. And then I stopped and I thought, well, here's a podcast episode because how many times do we put off doing sometimes the smallest task because of the larger things that come along with it?
It wasn't about downloading it, it wasn't about putting in the password, it was the combination. And honestly, it was the time to stop, deal with the issue, and do what I needed to do to alleviate the initial challenge that I started from in the beginning. It takes more time and more effort to put into thinking about why and how you can't do what you need to do than it is to just do the damn thing to begin with. So this week I want you to take your power back by taking care of the annoying thing that you know you just don't want to deal with, but also know your life is going to be a lot easier and a lot more streamlined if you just block out the time to do it.

46: Building a Budget with Diana Stone Dec 03, 2019
    Show notes

We like to talk about money a lot on The Gutsy Podcast. It’s often a secretive, taboo topic that people shy away from. Yet we all have it, use it, and are challenged by it, so why not talk more openly?? Money often comes with shame, overwhelm, worry, and despair — so it feels easier to live with it in silence.
In reality, if we pick up the phone and have a conversation with the debt collectors, open up the drawer of bills we’ve pretended don’t exist, and acknowledge our finances and our situation, we not only can we take our power back — we can create a plan on how to overcome it.
This week, we have financial guru Diana Stone talking all things budget. She shared that debt is a behavior issue, not a money issue… it’s all in what we do with what we have. We’ve lost an emotional connection to the physical bills and your income is your biggest wealth tool. “You have to sacrifice to win!” Can I get an amen??
If creating a budget has been on your mind but you have no idea where to start, Diana has a palatable way to not only integrate it into your life — but use it to your advantage. A budget gives you permission to spend without guilt!

Powerback 45: Quitting Email on Nights and Weekends Nov 28, 2019
    Show notes

There are two types of people in the world. There are the people that have a Zero Inbox (or just a couple), and then there are the people with 8,497 emails in their inbox — all unread. Email has quickly become one of our primary forms of communication and man is it a slippery slope. Tone can get lost, details can get overseen, and it can create a disconnect between people.
Today we're going to talk about the crippling need to answer our emails at any given time of any given day. When I first started Worx back in 2007, I felt like I had to answer emails all day and all night. I mean, people needed something from me, right? They were sending me a message, which meant that they requested a response from me. And in my head, I assumed they needed it.
In that instant, I thought I was being a better business person. I thought I was a better communicator. And I thought that I was helping them. Turns out what I was actually doing was training them on what they can expect from me, and that was an immediate response. So then when I would go a few hours — or heaven forbid a day or two — without responding to them: What's wrong is something going on? Why haven't you responded to me? It created anxiety and stress for both of us.
It actually took me a couple of years to undo that training I did with those clients and create a new standard for myself and the way I communicated. I set up a new expectation by not answering people immediately, by not answering them at nighttime, and most certainly not answering on the weekend.
If you're in the type of business where it's required for you to be on email over the weekend, for instance, if you're on call, then yeah — you're probably gonna need to be checking your emails. But if you're running a business or working within a business that is not requiring that of you yet, you have created that standard for yourself. You have inflicted a lot more stress on your life than is necessary, and guess what? The beautiful thing is you have the power to change that.
This week, I want you to take your power back by turning off the notifications on your email, on your phone, and not checking your email at nighttime or on weekends.
There's an anxiety that comes with it: Am I missing out to somebody who needs something from me? But after a few weeks and doing this on a regular basis, it became the new norm. I undid a habit that I had created myself. And you want to know something? It is so freeing to not be bogged down with the need to check email.
Keep in mind if it's THAT important, someone will pick up the phone and then you can handle it if that scenario arises. The easiest way I have found to not feel like I have to check those emails day and night, night and weekend, is simply by turning off the notifications. When it's not dinging and binging, when it's not popping up while you're in the middle of doing something for dinner, the feeling of urgency starts to go away. And after some time, you too can break that habit.

45: Building Confidence in Female Leadership with Ashley Connell Nov 26, 2019
    Show notes

Being a woman can be challenging on its own… then add in career choices, mom guilt, schedules, professional development, investing in yourself, and confidence. Heesh, it can be a lot to juggle. This week, I have the CEO and Founder of the Prowess Project, Ashely Connell on The Gutsy Podcast. We’re talking about the need for female leadership and why it’s so damn hard to re-enter the workforce or make a change that fulfills you.
    So what stops us?
    Lack of confidence.
    Feeling like an imposter.
Needing to have all of the details.
    Mom guilt.
Feeling like we don’t have the skills.
If you’re nodding your head in agreement, this week will not only make you laugh but help you realize that you’re worth more than you give yourself credit for.
Side note: We had so many funny analogies on this episode, from burgers to bluebirds and even roller coasters… it’s a wild and crazy ride and sometimes all you need is a wink to remind you that you’re on the right path.

Powerback 44: Infuse Simple Exercises into Your Busy Schedule Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

Earlier this week, we talked to Lauren about infusing simple exercises into your daily life and look, guys, I am one and the same as you. I have a lot going on on a regular basis. I'm being pulled in a lot of different directions and sometimes the thought of infusing exercise as one more thing, it's like, you know what? That's the easiest thing to not have to do. Let me just sit on the couch.
I want to tell you, I've been on this journey and if you've been following along with the podcast, you know that I love Peloton and I'm here to admit something — it sucks. But I'm going to admit it to you. So I had this amazing goal to buy this bike, right? This was something that I really wanted to do for myself. I knew that going to the gym was not my thing. There are just a hundred different reasons. So then I achieved that goal, which is amazing.
For a year I had a pretty good routine and I was working on a regular basis and you know, just doing all the great things on the Peloton and then life happened. Stuff got challenging at work. I wasn't keeping up with my home to the best of my abilities. I'm trying to invest in my mind. I'm trying to grow my business. I have a husband, I have a son, I have a family. I could keep going.
There are a lot of things that happen on a regular basis and guess what was one of the very first things to go? I stopped riding. I put on the weight I had lost. I lost the confidence I had gained. I lost my momentum and it just became easier to not do it because while I haven't been on it in a few weeks and now, in this case, a few months, why pick it back up?
This is a cycle I carry and I see that I'm being faced with right now to say, Hey, how bad do you want this? And not talking about the bike anymore because I have it. I'm talking about the growth of myself and my family and our business and our finances. To do greater things requires taking greater care of myself and I'm sitting here thinking, damn it, Laura, why are we back here? Why are we doing this again? Well, as we're growing and we get pulled in lots of directions, we are often the very first thing to go.
This week, I want you to take your power back by infusing a simple exercise into your busy schedule. I know you are busy and you know what, so am I. But you owe it to yourself to invest in your body.
    Tune in to hear more!
