    The Experimental Leader

Are you a business owner, executive, leader, team leader, aspiring future leader, leadership junkie, a scientist, a design thinker, or simply the leader of your own life? If you are, then you are a leader, and as such, you should be experimenting!

Welcome to The Experimental Leader, a podcast where we tackle the ways leaders are experimenting in their own work. Hosted by Melanie Parish and Dr. Mel Rutherford, we dive into the most interesting questions about leaders and get into real-life conversations about how people might be experimenting with their leadership. What they are trying? How they are leading and managing their flow of work and throughput? How are they managing bottlenecks, mission, vision, strategic, operational, and tactical intents? How do they organize experiments? How do they succeed? How do they fail? How do they collect data?

The loneliness of leadership can be overwhelming, especially when a leader gets promoted and doesn’t have a roadmap for how to lead. They might feel like they are supposed to have the answers, and yet they have to figure out what that really means. The hardest part can be not having anyone to talk to about their leadership journey.

Fear not. Let Melanie Parish and Mel Rutherford be your guide to becoming the leader you were meant to be – an experimental leader!

A public speaker, consultant, workshop leader, author, and Master Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation, from whom she received the Prism Award, Melanie is an expert in problem-solving, constraints management, operations, strategic hiring, and brand development. She has consulted and coached organizations ranging from a Fortune 50 company to IT start-ups receiving their first round of funding. Her individual clients include those in FAANG and other top global IT companies. Melanie is a Certified Professional Coactive Coach and, Organization and Relationship Systems Certified Coach, and a Theory of Constraints Certified Jonah. As an author, educator, and creator of The Experimental Leader program, Melanie shows people new ways of thinking about their leadership, informed by her understanding of the fast-paced ride of technology innovation.

A professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, and Canada Research Chair in Social Perception. Dr. Mel Rutherford graduated from Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Human Development from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A Fulbright Fellowship allowed Dr. Rutherford to study and collaborate with the well-known Simon Baron-Cohen in Cambridge, England. Dr. Rutherford also worked with Bruce Pennington and Sally Rogers at the University of Denver as a postdoctoral fellow. He now heads a dynamic research laboratory at McMaster University. Dr. Rutherford is well-known for research in the field of psychology and has been interviewed and quoted in The Globe and Mail, The London Times, The Chicago Times, CBC Radio, Quirks and Quarks, and The Discovery Channel, as well as many AP newspapers around the world.

Get rid of the fear and doubt, and shift your leadership into something that works better. Every week, learn from top leaders about how they’re experimenting, how they’re leading, and how they’re doing the things that they do. Helping People Harness Digital Empathy at Work with Mckenna Sweazey May 13, 2022
    Show notes

It was fun to be here with Mckenna Sweazey.

And I love this idea of, if you're having a bad day, go ahead and let people know it's a different kind of feedback loop, which I talked about in the experimental leader book.

But I love the idea that if we wonder what people think we're thinking, we just tell them. Let people know how we're feeling, and what we're experiencing so that we increase their knowledge of what's going on.

We decrease the chaos a little bit in those interpersonal relationships, especially in an online environment because the online environment increases chaos and increases the not knowing. And it allows us to have empathy for each other. It allows us to have a better sense of reality so that we don't make things up.

The absence of knowledge has people make up what they think is happening, and often, we're just wrong. So knowing and having a story to start with that is, at least based on some facts is very helpful.

I challenge you to think about where you can up your empathy, either at home or at work this week.

2nd Anniversary Episode with Marita Fridjhon: What Does Systems Inspired Leadership Bring To Us Today? And What Has Changed Since Our Last Interview? Apr 28, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it is so fun to talk with Marita Fridjhon.

She is masterful at systems and what I would call feedback loops.

And I love this idea of systems-inspired leadership. The idea that we don't have to lead alone is much a part of how I think about leadership.

I want to challenge your thinking. Think about where you try to go it alone and have to be smart?

I want to bust you on that. I want you to think about how you can bring others in when you feel like you have to figure it out all by yourself and where others could help you do it better?

Building Confident Leaders and Healthy Teams with Todd Long Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

Well, that was a fun conversation with Todd Long.

And one of the biggest takeaways for me from this conversation is that it's such an interesting idea to think about the fact that the vision doesn't have to come just from the leader. We can have these conversations that develop our vision.

Vision can come from everywhere in the organization. We can throw out drafts and we can get feedback or we can engage people in a preliminary conversation about the vision. We don't have to decide on our own.

I hope that you have some really interesting vision conversations as you include the people in your organization.

The Future of Where Remote Work is Going with Liam Martin Apr 15, 2022
    Show notes

It was lovely to speak to Liam Martin.

I love this idea of the experimental context. We tried some experimentation on taking remote work home or taking the office home.

And I'm fascinated by this idea of asynchronous, remote work, helping to build more a diverse and inclusive work environment and get rid of some of the biases that we might have. I want to continue to explore it.

And I want to challenge you to look at what are your assumptions about remote workers around people who work you know in the office next to you? Pay attention to who you like more, who you feel more connected to, and why and how much of it is proximity bias? I think it's an interesting question.

Using Academic Theory and Applying it to the Corporate Setting to Achieve Business Results with Steve Yacovelli Apr 08, 2022
    Show notes

It was just great talking to Steve Yacovelli.

I love this idea of feedback being a gift. I think it is a great gift to have access to information. Often as leaders, we're afraid of information if it doesn't align with what we believe.

And so I encourage you, as you get information, to see it as information to be curious about what you knew already. What you didn't know and not to leap to an immediate.

And then buy yourself time. You know, anytime you're getting feedback, that's hard to take. Just give yourself a minute to say, "Hey, let me think about that for a little while. Get back to you."

It's always okay to ask for more time. It's great any time you meet with a manager and they say something to you that you are like at the moment. Just train yourself to ask for more time. It's a great leadership skill.

Eliminating Self Doubt, Anxiety & Mental Blocks with Adrian Moreno Mar 31, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was great being here with Adrian Moreno, and I am so conscious of this idea of the idea of fostering a dream. This is true for coaching. It's true for hypnosis, I feel like we can all tune up our brains a little bit. So I want to challenge you as just a human being to think about yourself, your thoughts, what you're calling forth for yourself, and do a little tune-up on the inside. Think of the pictures that you want to achieve on the inside. That you want to manifest on the outside but start with the picture you have in your mind. I think it's a really powerful thought.

Experimenting with Being All of Who You Are as a Leader with Bryna Haynes Mar 17, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was fantastic to talk to Bryna Haynes about the idea of thought leadership.

The idea is that you can put your ideas out into the world as something substantial. And I think this is such interesting for people. It's one of the bases of how I work with leaders.

Coaching is to find out how they want to impact the world and what they uniquely offer to their profession. So it isn't just about being good at your job. That's like sort of the fair value exchange for your job.

It isn't about being outstanding at your job. It's about becoming an expert and a thought leader contributor in your field.

And if you have that orientation, I love that she talks about this. That orientation is so powerful for career development.

So I'd love for you to think about this week. I'd love for you to think about your career. Where are you on that journey from being good at something to being an expert and then being a thought leader in your field? Have an honest conversation in your mind about that for yourself. Figure out where you are and where you'd like to be with that.

Achieve Excellence by Doing Ordinary Things Extraordinarily Well with Dave McKeown Mar 10, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was great to talk to Dave today.

And I love that he was talking about reactivity. And I have a gift for you. I have a cheat sheet that's about toxic leadership behaviors. You might find them in yourself. You might find them in others. You can get that at reactivecheatsheet.experimentalleader.com. I'm proud of this. And I think it's a really helpful way to just think about how you work with others. We are always doing that. And it's important to figure it out.

I was struck today with this idea of a timeline. And I think it's so important for us to adjust our timelines to fit the situation. If you think about what COVID has done to all of us collectively, it has shortened our timeline, everything became an emergency. And that's burned out our adrenals. It made us tired. It gives us less capacity.

The thing you can do for yourself as you're coming out of it if you want to excel in leadership is to start just leaving space to consider the timeline a year from now two years from now three years from now, maybe five years from now. Not because you can put a plan in place. But because you can put a plan in place that includes that timeline. You may still have the reactive things that are going on in your organization that you have to respond to quickly. That's fine.

Start to leave space to dream about the future. My challenge to you this week is what's your dream for three years from now? And what do you need to do today for that dream to be possible?

Reputation Management for Leaders with Bant Breen Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

I love getting to talk to Bant Breen. He was fantastic.

And I love this idea of curating your presence online. I also like the idea of, you know, picking three things that you can focus on so that you're not trying to be all things. It's part of that personal leadership brand.

Who are you? What do you want to move in this world? What's your vision of a perfect world? And how do you comment on that?

So, my challenge to you this week is to take a minute to think of the three things you want to move in the world and make some notes for yourself. Figure out how that's going to be a part of the way that you manage your professional brand and your reputation.

Learning How to Find, Bid, and Win Profitable Contracts with Kizzy Parks Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it's just been amazing to be here with Kizzy Parks today. I'm still thinking about bottlenecks. I'm fascinated by how she got her records and all of the different areas that she worked on improving flow.

So there's the visual field. There was how her feet landed on the ground. I'm sure there's something about how fast her arms went around. And I just want to leave you with that thought today. Where are the bottlenecks? What are the bottlenecks?

There's always only one bottleneck. Once you clear that one, it becomes clear what the next bottleneck is, but you don't have to work on multiple bottlenecks at once.

So think about what your bottleneck is this week. I'd love to hear what you think about your bottlenecks and what you're going to do to work on them. And it's been great being with you today. Go experiment.
