    The Experimental Leader

Are you a business owner, executive, leader, team leader, aspiring future leader, leadership junkie, a scientist, a design thinker, or simply the leader of your own life? If you are, then you are a leader, and as such, you should be experimenting!

Welcome to The Experimental Leader, a podcast where we tackle the ways leaders are experimenting in their own work. Hosted by Melanie Parish and Dr. Mel Rutherford, we dive into the most interesting questions about leaders and get into real-life conversations about how people might be experimenting with their leadership. What they are trying? How they are leading and managing their flow of work and throughput? How are they managing bottlenecks, mission, vision, strategic, operational, and tactical intents? How do they organize experiments? How do they succeed? How do they fail? How do they collect data?

The loneliness of leadership can be overwhelming, especially when a leader gets promoted and doesn’t have a roadmap for how to lead. They might feel like they are supposed to have the answers, and yet they have to figure out what that really means. The hardest part can be not having anyone to talk to about their leadership journey.

Fear not. Let Melanie Parish and Mel Rutherford be your guide to becoming the leader you were meant to be – an experimental leader!

A public speaker, consultant, workshop leader, author, and Master Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation, from whom she received the Prism Award, Melanie is an expert in problem-solving, constraints management, operations, strategic hiring, and brand development. She has consulted and coached organizations ranging from a Fortune 50 company to IT start-ups receiving their first round of funding. Her individual clients include those in FAANG and other top global IT companies. Melanie is a Certified Professional Coactive Coach and, Organization and Relationship Systems Certified Coach, and a Theory of Constraints Certified Jonah. As an author, educator, and creator of The Experimental Leader program, Melanie shows people new ways of thinking about their leadership, informed by her understanding of the fast-paced ride of technology innovation.

A professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, and Canada Research Chair in Social Perception. Dr. Mel Rutherford graduated from Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Human Development from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A Fulbright Fellowship allowed Dr. Rutherford to study and collaborate with the well-known Simon Baron-Cohen in Cambridge, England. Dr. Rutherford also worked with Bruce Pennington and Sally Rogers at the University of Denver as a postdoctoral fellow. He now heads a dynamic research laboratory at McMaster University. Dr. Rutherford is well-known for research in the field of psychology and has been interviewed and quoted in The Globe and Mail, The London Times, The Chicago Times, CBC Radio, Quirks and Quarks, and The Discovery Channel, as well as many AP newspapers around the world.

Get rid of the fear and doubt, and shift your leadership into something that works better. Every week, learn from top leaders about how they’re experimenting, how they’re leading, and how they’re doing the things that they do. Join us here on The Experimental Leader and step into leadership with confidence and the knowledge to start leading the experiment today!

The Challenges Women Face in Leadership with Sinead Sharkey Steenson Nov 05, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was great to be here with you today.

I loved talking about Gemba walks and women in leadership.

I challenge you to think about where you want to learn more about the people you're supervising and the world you want to see more.

And go there and look at what's happening on the ground. Do your Gemba walk.

Figure out what you want to learn. Then, find out what you can see.

It's all there waiting for you.

And I encourage you to learn as much as you can.

The Power of Telling Your Story Through Memoir with Anne Bokma Oct 29, 2022
    Show notes

It's been so fun to be here with you today.

And oh my goodness, Anne Bokma is just such an experimenter in her soul. So it's fun to talk to her about how she approached her book.

You know, it reminds me of being in a workshop at the University of Michigan with Mike Rother, the author of Toyota Kata. And he, you know, said if you want things to change, start changing something somewhere.

So if there's something in your life you want to have to be different, start doing some things. Start changing something. Start experimenting somewhere.

So my challenge is to find a place you aren't so satisfied with and pick a place to experiment. It doesn't matter if it's exactly right.

Do a short experiment, maybe a week and pick something and start trying something new.

    Sh*t Happens Oct 21, 2022
    Show notes

Well, this has been super interesting.

And if you want to think more about leadership, or any of those things, I'd love to invite you to go to my website, melanieparish.com.

You can learn about individual coaching, you can learn about the Leadership Essentials program, and you can get a copy of the book.

And it's interesting to pivot. It's interesting to redirect live. So I think anytime things happen in a fast-moving world. So it's essential to take a minute.

I accepted, you know, five maybe to think, and Christine watched me think for a while today and figure out what principles I want to stand on. What are the values that I want to stand on?

And today, it was authenticity like this and a chance to dialogue with you about what's happening in real-time.

So my challenge to you is what's your authentic leadership that needs to shine through as things don't always go exactly the way that you want them to.

How a Business Can Accelerate Growth Without Overwork and Overwhelm with Crista Grasso Oct 14, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it's been super fun to be here with Crista Grasso. It's amusing to talk about continuous improvement.

And I want to challenge you to go out and look for a space in your calendar for some time that you can block out to hold for innovation in your life.

Maybe it's an innovation Friday. Perhaps it's an hour, in the morning or on Tuesday. It doesn't matter.

Take some time to consider how you hold innovation in your life or for yourself.

It may be about innovating your leadership brand and how you think globally. But look for a space for innovation in your life.

Leadership Through Influence with Greg Poirier Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

It's been so fun to be with you here today. And it was super fun to hear Greg talking about how his leadership journey has evolved.

I want to reiterate the idea of sharing thoughts. Sometimes it's a year before they happen. Sometimes it's two years; my example of the Unitarian Church is 20 years. That's a bit long, but you want to start sharing your ideas and seed your environment with the things you want to happen.

It helps you emerge as a thought leader. And it allows people to see the items you're interested in, be a thinker, and then share those thoughts freely. Because it helps you in your career development and lets people see what you're interested in.

I hope that you have a fantastic week.

Intimacy and feminine energy for high level CEOs with Melisa Keenan Sep 23, 2022
    Show notes

I had a great time on the show today with Melissa Keenan.

And our discussion brings me back to the thought that our discussions' quality compensates for our relationships' quality.

So, this week, I'd want to encourage you to go out and have meaningful discussions with individuals you care about.

And I'm sure you've been putting off a conversation or two because it was summer, the kids were going to return to school, you didn't want to make waves, or you had something else on your mind, but I want to urge you to have those essential conversations.

So I'd like you to go ahead and have that conversation you've been putting off this entire week.

Exploring Positive Intelligence with Kimberly Wiefling Sep 15, 2022
    Show notes

It was such a joy to be here with Kimberly Wiefling. She's such a clear leader in her field. I love how she brings in evidence-based models for leadership.

And it's so interesting how she talks about feedback loops, which we discussed in the experimental leader. How do you learn about yourself as a leader? How do you take in information and learn? And then how do you figure out how it's impacting others because leadership is. So it's a circle; you're learning and leading or influencing others with your leadership.

So you also want to hear from them about how you're doing. So ask, Hey, I've been inquisitive. I've been trying to say this in meetings. How's that landing for you? So ask specific questions. Don't ask broad like, hey, how do you think I'm doing in my leadership?

Leadership can be a little lonely. And so, New Leaders often want way more feedback than they naturally get. One thing I hear from new leaders is that nobody tells me anything. It's like they don't get the feedback they're used to getting from having a boss at a lower level in an organization.

So part of learning to be a good leader is learning to quiet that voice in yourself. But on a systematic level, you can ask for feedback. So you don't want to overtax your people by asking for feedback too often, it makes you seem needy, and you can regularly ask for feedback. And over time, learn about your leadership.

So you don't want them to have you don't want to have been trying to get your ego massaged from feedback. You want to be learning about what you can do better.

Experimenting with Retrospective with Paul Reed Jun 09, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it's been a joy hanging out with Paul Reed, as always. Thank you so much. I loved having him on the show. It was wonderful.

Well, that was so much fun. And I think it's very important to look at both retrospectives.

And think of that socio-technical complexity and how it intersects with the Gemba Walk. It's not my concept. I referenced it in The Experiment Leader book.

It's important to look at the human components of measurement. As we try to figure out whether or not our experiments work.

I challenge you to look around at the experiments that you're doing in your work and with your people. See what the people are doing this week.

How to Turn Your Experiences Into Stories that Teach, Lead, and Inspire with Mark Carpenter Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was great having Mark Carpenter on the show. It's been really interesting to talk to him.

I love this idea of a story. To illuminate the good and also come out and talk about the things that didn't go so well. It's really important to have a way to share our vulnerability through a story.

I want to challenge you to come up with a story in which you can share your vulnerability. We don't always have to do that.

In the moment. We know that as leaders, we're supposed to be vulnerable but we don't always have to do it right.

So I challenge you. If you're leading, I want you to come up with a story that's a safe vulnerability. It doesn't have to be a vulnerability. That's like your most tender spot.

Think of a story or two that are ways that you overcame adversity that could be shared with your team. To help them know that you overcame adversity so that you can pull it out when you need it.

It was so fun to talk with George Murray about how to pay attention as a leader and about all of that.

And I have a challenging question for you. How can you ignite the people around you to engage in the things they love to do?

That's my challenge question to you this week. Go experiment.
