    The Experimental Leader

Are you a business owner, executive, leader, team leader, aspiring future leader, leadership junkie, a scientist, a design thinker, or simply the leader of your own life? If you are, then you are a leader, and as such, you should be experimenting!

Welcome to The Experimental Leader, a podcast where we tackle the ways leaders are experimenting in their own work. Hosted by Melanie Parish and Dr. Mel Rutherford, we dive into the most interesting questions about leaders and get into real-life conversations about how people might be experimenting with their leadership. What they are trying? How they are leading and managing their flow of work and throughput? How are they managing bottlenecks, mission, vision, strategic, operational, and tactical intents? How do they organize experiments? How do they succeed? How do they fail? How do they collect data?

The loneliness of leadership can be overwhelming, especially when a leader gets promoted and doesn’t have a roadmap for how to lead. They might feel like they are supposed to have the answers, and yet they have to figure out what that really means. The hardest part can be not having anyone to talk to about their leadership journey.

Fear not. Let Melanie Parish and Mel Rutherford be your guide to becoming the leader you were meant to be – an experimental leader!

A public speaker, consultant, workshop leader, author, and Master Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation, from whom she received the Prism Award, Melanie is an expert in problem-solving, constraints management, operations, strategic hiring, and brand development. She has consulted and coached organizations ranging from a Fortune 50 company to IT start-ups receiving their first round of funding. Her individual clients include those in FAANG and other top global IT companies. Melanie is a Certified Professional Coactive Coach and, Organization and Relationship Systems Certified Coach, and a Theory of Constraints Certified Jonah. As an author, educator, and creator of The Experimental Leader program, Melanie shows people new ways of thinking about their leadership, informed by her understanding of the fast-paced ride of technology innovation.

A professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, and Canada Research Chair in Social Perception. Dr. Mel Rutherford graduated from Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Human Development from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A Fulbright Fellowship allowed Dr. Rutherford to study and collaborate with the well-known Simon Baron-Cohen in Cambridge, England. Dr. Rutherford also worked with Bruce Pennington and Sally Rogers at the University of Denver as a postdoctoral fellow. He now heads a dynamic research laboratory at McMaster University. Dr. Rutherford is well-known for research in the field of psychology and has been interviewed and quoted in The Globe and Mail, The London Times, The Chicago Times, CBC Radio, Quirks and Quarks, and The Discovery Channel, as well as many AP newspapers around the world.

Get rid of the fear and doubt, and shift your leadership into something that works better. Experimenting with conflict with Sean Castrina Feb 17, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it's been great talking with Sean Castrina. I am so grateful for the thoughts that we explored on here.

As leaders, we have to be thinking about who we are. We have to think about someone. We have to think of the fights we pick and what we invest in.

And I challenge you to experiment with the conversations you need to have and with who you are in those conversations.

So that you can have the most positive, productive conflict possible. So that you're taking it somewhere. So that you're developing skills, and then experimenting differently with the way you approach it. To see what works for you and what doesn't.

Overcoming Adversity, Resilience and Keeping a Positive Mindset with Fiona Demark Feb 10, 2022
    Show notes

Well, it was fun talking to Fiona Demark.

I am so struck by the idea that when you're choosing one thing, you're not choosing another. And that is to be respectful in your own life. You will need to be okay with that. I think that's such a powerful thought.

And I encourage all of you to experiment with that. To be at peace with what you choose to do and what you can do. And to honor your journey.

Leading Disruption with Sam Nguyen & Hunter Smith Feb 03, 2022
    Show notes

So it was interesting to talk to Sam and Hunter about disruption. I'm fascinated. I like inviting people to my show because I love that leadership skills translate as they go across, you know, different kinds of work.

They work in our home lives. So the thing that I noticed is, you know, a clear vision is still a good leadership skill. Best practices are still a good leadership style, and then bravery.

We talked about getting arrested, putting your body on the line in this one. And I think both those things, not the getting arrested part in leadership, I hope for business. But I think that we put our bodies on the line when we have to give up going to the gym for our work or we aren't able to do as much self-care as we need. We're putting ourselves on the line day in and day out in leadership.

I want to give you an assignment this week. I want you to think about what you want to disrupt in your world. And I want to challenge you to go experiment with disruption.

Helping Remote Communication Suck Less with Josh Little Jan 27, 2022
    Show notes

Well, that was fun. And I love the idea of Volley as on-demand communication. It fits in line with the Toyota Kata stuff around just in time. And I love all of that.

I think it's iterative. So you can have more iteration of exactly what you need to remove bottlenecks and to do it right at the last second. Or you know to repeat the questions often enough to remove your bottlenecks one after the other. Which is like speeding up productivity. So I love that.

I want to invite you to download a copy of my book at digitalbook.experimentalleader.com. I also want to tell you that it offers an opportunity to buy a workbook where you can chart your progress with that book. I wrote that book, and it took me seven years to write it.

I like it when people get a chance to take their learning and to have a place to put that learning. And to keep that learning. There are additional questions there.

I always dreamed of having that book be like dog eared and tired, and the pages were marked and highlighted. And the feedback I often get when people finish it is "Oh, my gosh! I need to go back and read again."

It's a pretty rich book and has a lot of helpful tips to help you lead a team. And so I'd love to hear from you. If you buy the book and you have feedback. I have a few feedback loops around how people experience the book live, and I'd love to hear that.

Well, I challenge you to think about how you change the way you communicate with your team in any way you can think of.

Addressing Bias and Incivility in the Workplace with Robin Rosenberg Jan 20, 2022
    Show notes

It was just fascinating getting to talk with Dr. Robin Rosenberg.

And I loved all of the talks about onboarding and how you think about the way that you approach conversations from a leadership perspective.

And also how you see the conversations for the people on teams who are welcoming new team members. How do you invite them to be curious? How do you invite them to have today be a new day? To think about the feedback loops that they're setting up with people.

And there's a whole chapter in my book about feedback loops, you might really enjoy that.

So I really encourage you if you're bringing new people onto your team, think about what your dream is for them. Think about how you best foster that dream and how you create a new day for them and for you as you welcome new team members.

Highly Sensitive Leading with Heather Dominick Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

So I loved talking with Heather Dominick today. It was such an interesting conversation.

And what I noticed is that all of the things that Heather's suggested, sort of acceptance, and all of this is a part of improving feedback loops. We don't want people to be overwhelmed because we want them to take the information. We want them to be able to share information.

So if we look at the experimental leader, sort of that's the principle. It's improving these feedback loops if people aren't reactive and they can respond in those ways.

I love the idea that radical acceptance of so many things can change the way that we do in our work as leaders. I have a challenge for you. And that is for the next couple of weeks. I want you to look at where you can use radical acceptance of uncertainty in the way you lead.

Designing New Workplace Experiments with Melissa Boggs Dec 09, 2021
    Show notes

I love Melissa's spirit. I love that she talked about experimenting. And you know, of course, that's near and dear to my heart. And the thing that I loved about it so much is that there was a clear intention behind it. We knew what we wanted to change. We wanted to change the way the hiring process felt in both directions. She also wanted to have better outcomes. And as somebody who does the hiring, I see how observing the behavior is better than hearing about the behavior.

And so trying this experiment, and then trying it multiple times. And then I love that she collected feedback both internally and in tech. Also, from the candidates, and got feedback on the process.

Please think about where you can experiment around processes that don't feel good—or around processes, hiring processes. How can you change your hiring processes in ways? How can you experiment to get better outcomes, especially right now, when things are so competitive?

It's worth the effort to plan new processes right now because the stakes are so high. It's so competitive. And innovation is super attractive to the kind of candidates you want to attract. So, my challenge to you is to figure out where you can experiment.

Experimenting with Long-Term Strategy with Mark Sherkey Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

Well, I've been talking with Mark Sherkey, and I've loved our conversation. And I love that he differentiated between strategy and plans because I kind of hate strategic plans. It's like they are out of date.

The second is that you do them because you've made a plan based on the current condition, but then your goals need to change because every time you start implementing whatever the goal is, the whole system changes.

So in my book, The Experimental Leader, I talked about strategic intents. That's the framework that I like to think of in terms of strategy. That will help you have an intent to move forward and intent about what you want to do, and then you have operational intents to move things like the budgeting process forward.

I also would love to give you a FREE KATA CARD. If you have been reading the book and you want to practice the concepts of the experimental leader, you can send me an email at melanie@experimentalleader.com, and I will send that out to you.

Self Awareness Strategies for Success with Dr. L Carol Scott Nov 25, 2021
    Show notes

It was great to be here with Dr. Carol Scott. And I love these ideas that are super practical that she shared. And it makes me think about how we experiment as leaders with ourselves, with our thoughts giving ourselves a break but trying something new. The next time learning to repattern is an experimental process.

These objects exemplify how you are now and other objects that illustrate how you want to be because those are touchstones for evaluating the change, shift, target condition, or desired end state that you want to achieve as a leader. I feel like we're talking about who we are from the inside out as leaders. Not so much what we show, but what do we look at inside ourselves? What are our abandoned dreams? What are those new dreams for who we want to be as leaders?

Experimenting with Copywriting with Nicki Krawczyk Nov 19, 2021
    Show notes

It was just such a compelling interview. Nicki, she's so interesting. I'm left pondering this idea of whether or not leaders can have bad days. I think one of the things that we bring to organizations as leaders is that bright-eyed bushy-tailed energy not all the time and not in a cloying way, and not in a fake way.

There's some authenticity around it all but I do think being able to walk past some of the bullshit and just be in the possible. Like the positive and the possible for our staff is something that we can do powerfully as leaders.

I'm curious as to where you think you cross that line. Where your authenticity steps a little too much into whining. Or where you do a great job of holding that positivity of being solutions-oriented, of walking past the trouble, and sort of holding a beacon for your staff.
