    General Order 1.

In "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum," Specialist Michael Burnham explains that "General Order 1 [the Prime Directive] restricts us from revealing ourselves to sentient beings that aren't warp capable." But is it really that simple? Starfleet's non-interference directive is actually quite complex, and it plays an important—but very malleable—role in the Star Trek universe.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" and how it develops Saru's story and other character arcs. We also look at stardates, play Latin trivia, and explore how the Prime Directive has been applied throughout Star Trek. Plus, an Ash Voqlar update.

When the crew of the USS Discovery face off against the Klingons and their new invisibility screen, they begin to realize that the spore drive may not be the ultimate weapon they think. Meanwhile, Saru, Burnham, and Tyler are on an away mission in the hopes of finding a way to penetrate the Klingon's new technology. While on the planet Pahvo, they encounter aliens that have an extreme effect on Saru.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Amy Nelson are joined by Tony Robinson of Continuing Mission and Justin Oser of Earl Grey to discuss the eighth episode of Star Trek: Discovery, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum."

    Time Loops.

Ever have the feeling something has happened before? Maybe 54 times? Ever get the urge to throw on some Bee Gees and dance the night away ... only to be interrupted by a fish? Yeah, neither have we. But it did happen to the crew of the USS Discovery—again and again—and to stay alive they had to con a con man.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"—particularly how it compares to "Cause and Effect" and other past time loop stories—and explores the music of the episode and previous instances of popular tunes in Star Trek.

    Show notes

Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.

While the crew of the USS Discovery has a party to let off steam, Harry Mudd boards the ship in an attempt to sell it and the spore drive technology to the Klingons. To give himself time to figure out Discovery's secrets, he uses a time crystal to initiate a temporal causality loop, repeating the same 30 minutes over and over. But he doesn't anticipate the perceptiveness of one crewmember—Lieutenant Paul Stamets—who, due to his recent brush with tardigrade DNA, exists outside the normal timeline.

In this episode of The Edge, host Amy Nelson is joined by Ken Tripp of Standard Orbit to discuss the seventh episode of Star Trek: Discovery, "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad."

In our news segment, Mike Schindler and Brandon-Shea Mutala explore Into the Unknown the new EP by Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country composer Cliff Eidelman.
