    Midseason Stellar Grab Bag.

Some fans feel that the writers of Discovery don't know their Star Trek, and that they are rewriting Klingon history. But is that true? Not if you connect the dots. Listen to dialogue and pay attention to tactical displays and star charts and you'll find that the flash points of the Discovery story are the same ones we've visited time and again.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones uses the midseason break as an opportunity to explore a map of Klingon space and visit seven locales that connect this chapter of Star Trek with those that have come before.

Historical Connections. A notable aspect of Star Trek is how it connects to history, philosophy, and literature. The use of these elements provides the viewer with a familiar context in which the writers can explore new ideas.

In this episode of The Edge, host Mike Schindler is joined by Duncan Barrett of Primitive Culture to discuss historical connections found in Star Trek: Discovery. We discuss parallels between T'Kuvma's actions and those of Hitler in World War II, Moby-Dick, hidden memories, why Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There may be important to the mirror-universe plot, and much more!

    Themes in Discovery.

Spock is one of the most recognizable characters in Star Trek and represents the clash between logic and emotion. In Discovery, Michael Burnham carries forward this theme that has been part of the franchise from the start as she struggles to balance the need for both emotion and logic in her life. What other themes can be found in the first half of Discovery's freshman season?

In this episode of The Edge, host Amy Nelson is joined by Brandi Jackola and Heather Barker to discuss themes found in Discovery and how they connect to our personal lives. We highlight power and manipulation, logic vs. emotion, making sacrifices for your passions, and fear vs. peace and safety. We also look at characters and how we relate to them on a personal level.

    Parallel Universes.

Ever since Jonathan Frakes said that Discovery would be doing a Mirror Universe episode, fans have been anticipating a trip to that famous place where the Starfleet is bad and goatees are cool. And at the end of "Into the Forest I Go," Lorca and his crew appear to have jumped there. But did they? Could there be another explanation that might reconcile all fan complaints about the series?

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his theory about what we've really been watching for the past nine weeks, how the role parallel universes might play in Discovery isn't the one most fans expect, and why there might be a lot more to those Alice in Wonderland references than simply connecting Burnham to Amanda and Spock.
