    The Tardigrade.

Creating a new way to fly isn't easy, and some people wouldn't know the answer if it was staring them in the face … or chasing them down the hall. But Burnham would, and when she makes nice with the creature Landry named Ripper, spore drive to a huge leap forward.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry"—including Landry's very bad decision-making and the use of Klingon language—and explores the real-life animal that is helping Discovery avoid crashing into stars.

The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry.

A mining colony on Corvan II is under attack by Klingons. The Federation has sent Discovery to their aid, but the only way to arrive in time to save the colonists is to use the new spore drive. But what cost is Captain Lorca willing to pay for their rescue? Do the ends justify the means? According to Lorca, they do. He is willing to do anything and sacrifice anyone to win the war against the Klingon Empire—no matter how loud the lamb's cry.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Aaron Harvey welcome Davis Grayson to discuss the fourth episode of Star Trek: Discovery. We explore Lorca's character development, look at the interactions between Michael Burnham and the crew, and discuss the Klingon goal of unification. We also answer the question of whether Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better and more hopeful future is present in this new iteration of Star Trek.

But first, in our news segment, Mike Schindler and Max Hegel share their thoughts on After Trek.

Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Welcome to The Edge (00:01:05) After Trek (00:02:10) "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry" (00:20:08) Lorca (00:23:45) Burnham and Tilly (00:37:13) Burnham and Saru (00:42:29) Landry (00:48:18) Klingons (00:53:43) Too Dark? Spore Drive.

Strange things are afoot aboard the USS Discovery, and one of the strangest may be fungal research. Burnham's suspicions that a biological weapon is under development are put away when Captain Lorca tells her that they aren't creating a new way to kill, but rather a new way to fly … using mushroom spores. Fascinating.

In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on "Context Is for Kings" and the possible inspirations for spore drive—both in-universe and in real life.

    Context Is for Kings.

It could be said that the third episode of Star Trek: Discovery is the show's second pilot. We see the USS Discovery for the first time, and meet her captain and crew. However, this introduction only leads to questions. What is the primary mission of the NCC-1031? Who is to be trusted? Although we are familiar with Saru, six months have passed since we last saw him, and his character and relationship with Burnham have changed. Through Burnham's eyes, we are sizing up our new home, and many of the people we meet do not instill a feeling of comfort or trust.

In this episode of The Edge, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Amy Nelson are joined by Duncan Barrett of Primitive Culture and former Earl Grey host Lee Hutchison to discuss "Context Is for Kings." We compare this episode with the two-part pilot and highlight the new characters with whom Burnham must interact.

In the news segment, Mike and Duncan discuss the first Discovery tie-in book, Desperate Hours, by David Mack. And be sure to tune in to the next episode of Literary Treks, where Mack himself will take us behind the scenes of the novel's writing.

Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Desperate Hours (00:01:05) Context Is for Kings (00:23:55) Burnham and Saru (00:35:15) Silly Tilly (00:41:03) Lorca (00:53:47) Stamets (01:03:03) Black Alert (01:09:43) Predictions (01:17:30) Final Thoughts (01:22:40) Closing and Feedback (01:25:22)
