A Call for Universal Good Mental Process Aug 08, 2019
    Show notes

Today's episode features an idea that has been keeping me up at night. Could there ever be some universal good mental processes that everyone agrees on that lead to more happiness and results in our lives? If so, could they become non-negotiable as professional ways to behave in meetings and discussions. I'm fascinated with this idea and share some of those good mental processes as examples in this episode.

Drama is an enormous interference in our life and at Reality-Based Leadership we have found that the average person is spending 2.5 hours per day in drama. This is arguing with reality, blaming, moaning and whining, resisting change, not aligning with their organization - saying things like "this is sick and wrong and shouldn't be happening and I wouldn't have made that decision..."

It is chaos instead of clarity.

Drama is simply mental/emotional waste in our minds that lead to us taking poor actions and getting bad results. In business, if we have waste, we eliminate it by putting in a good process.

How could we get rid of emotional waste? Using good mental processes.

In this episode I consider a world where we had everyone align to good mental processes that the research shows leads to more happiness, better choices and better results.

If we all are looking for relief and peace and incredible results. Surely, it would make sense to have a chance to universally align to proven good mental processes.

That is a Reality-Based Leadership workplace. A No Ego workplace.

Some of those great mental processes includes our Ego Bypass Tools we teach leaders. You can learn those here!

Questions for self-reflection also trigger the use of a good mental process. Here are some of the heavy-hitter questions discussed in this podcast:

    • What do I know for sure?
    • What would great look like?
    • Is what I'm about to say going to add clarity or chaos?
    • What is my role in this situation? Decision-maker? Consultant? or just to be informed?
    • If I wasn't judging, what would I be doing to help?

This episode is great for anyone wondering:

    • How can I lead beyond drama with my teams
    • How do deal with conflict at work
    • How to manage teams more efficiently

I mentioned Cy Wakeman and my dissertation podcast we did on everything you'd ever need to know about giving and receiving feedback at work - Here is the link to watch that!

Wellness at Work Means Wellness in Life Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

Workplace wellness is a hot topic out there and an important concept for me and I loved diving into what ditching the drama means for this movement on the Redesigning Wellness podcast with Jen Arnold. We discuss the main sources of drama draining people’s energy at work and what that means for the push for more wellbeing in the workplace. Loved this podcast and am so grateful for the opportunity.

If you are looking for practical strategies to improve your personal wellness at work and the wellness of your teams you will love this podcast. We discuss the power our ego (and lack of understanding the ego) plays in our decreased wellness at work. As you might expect, we also discuss that our individual amount of drama is directly correlated to our reports of not being well at work.

Short and sweet today. I hope you guys love this one!

I find it so fun to have more of a conversation like this one on how our philosophy mixes in with hot topics out there. It always seems to add a bit of clarity to the chaos.

Hope you all have a wonderful week and you know the deal - let's keep ditching the drama. And be well!

7 Deadly Sins of Conventional Leadership Wisdom May 11, 2019
    Show notes

Many of us follow leadership wisdom that is passed down to us or that we have read and heard in management seminars of the past. Are they currently helping or hurting? Our research is showing that many are fueling drama instead of reducing it. This podcast discusses the top 7 deadly sins of the current leadership approach and what we can do to course-correct for a more peaceful workplace.

One of the most interesting parts of the work I do is that I get to hear many messages out there presented at conferences on how to lead teams. I also get to hear many strategies that leaders are trying and living by that they feel will get the best results. At Reality-Based Leadership we pride ourselves at taking each of those conventional wisdoms and testing them with the evidence in behavior economics, human behavior and the psychology.

Often times, many of the approaches we investigate are strategies that actually make being a leader tougher not easier. Many also allow colleagues to step down into a victim mindset instead of answering the call to greatness.

In this episode I cover the following deadly sins of conventional leadership wisdom that I am coming across during my speaking engagements and interactions with leaders across the country:

    1. Role TRUE of a leader - *hint - it is not to motivate and inspire others.
    2. Change at work is hard
    3. My opinion should count and I should be consulted on organizational decisions
    4. Leaders need to 'hold people accountable'
    5. Leaders must engage their people and make them happy at work
    6. Younger generation is impossible to lead
    7. People need to bring their whole self to work - we insist it be their most EVOLVED self instead.

Below are links to the FULL 30 MINUTE KEYNOTE of how Employee Engagement is Broken and How to Fix it. This explains our approach to current engagement philosophy and how we bring in filters of accountability to engage the right people on your teams.

You can also listen to an amazing episode that dives deeper into the "Does my opinion actually count at work?" topic in this podcast that Cy Wakeman and I did a few months ago. Many have loved the fire in this episode!

BONUS EPISODE: Employee Engagement is Broken - Full Keynote Apr 17, 2019
    Show notes

**Apologies for the scratching noise on some of the audio throughout the clip. There was a little interference between the two microphones I was wearing. Hope you can hang in there for the content!

Many organizations have gone all in on employee engagement. Coke and pepsi in the breakroom, increase vacation days, flexible working hours and whatever it can be done to improve employee circumstances. While watching this trend, our organization was worried an over-rotation on engagement, without a strong foundation in mindsets of accountability, would create entitlement.

And all trends are pointing to the fact that it has done just that in many cases.

This full keynote is all about how many organizations are frustrated with their approach to engagement, why we know that the research behind engagement strategies is flawed and, most importantly, I discuss practical ways to fix it moving forward.

In our presentations, we don't just come in and disrupt with reasons why we believe the current models aren't working. We ensure that we leave audiences with a settled mind because they have our framework, practical tools and techniques to actually implement what we are suggesting.

If you are looking for that practical tool that allows you to still listen to the concerns of your team about what would make the workplace amazing, but you believe in our model of accountability - be sure to listen all the way to the end for the Engaged Action Planning tool I teach. This is your solution.

This specific talk was only a 30-minute session, but I deliver conferences keynotes and corporate training sessions to leaders and employees to help ditch the drama from leadership, Hardwire Accountability in our teams, as well as Change Readiness (our modern take on traditional change management).

These talks can be customized to what your event is needing and can be super interactive from 30 minutes to 8 hours in content.

Joy or Misery, My Choice Apr 15, 2019
    Show notes

There are two ways to go through each day - joy our misery, our choice. I was reminded of this powerful lesson after a recent morning I had when I thought my car was stolen after getting home late from a speaking engagement.

I thought this lesson I share in this episode can show the impact of living the philosophy on the daily and how the same events can have drastically different results if we understand our ego and poor thinking.

Even though this is a different setup for an episode - I always love sharing the situations where I am screwing up my practice of the philosophy and how I'm getting back on track in the moment.

I thought this was a perfect example about how reducing the amount of drama in our thinking and following better mental processes can lead to more impact and happiness in the world.

At least it did in my world.

Hope you enjoy this episode on your commute, on your run, during your workout or wherever you may be listening. I appreciate all of you!

How to Love Your Job Again Mar 23, 2019
    Show notes

What if I told you that the job you hate today can become the job you love tomorrow? It sounds too good to be true, but I have had so many attendees reach out after our sessions and say that this is what happens in their mindsets after they learn our principles.

I am actually fascinated with the recent trend that so many people are longing to start their own business or enter the gig economy because they cannot find joy in their job anymore.

I'm not against someone starting their own company and being an entrepreneur, but I feel like an enormous amount of people are missing the massive opportunity within incredible corporations to develop themselves and get invested under the safety net of an established brand.

Understanding drama and how to navigate it in the workplace can open you up to a world of opportunity to accelerate your career. Not to mention all of the additional capital that the company may have to develop your leadership skills in a safe space without all of the risk of your own money.

This podcast episode introduces my top four ideas and tools to stop and take a reality check if the job you are in is what is causing your misery. This is the episode to listen to before you quit that job in an established company.

    So if you are wondering:

    • How to find a job that you love
    • How to be happier at work
    • How to find my purpose at work
    • Why I don't like my job so much

This podcast will really get you thinking!

How to Be More Confident as a Leader Mar 01, 2019
    Show notes

Many people are searching for ways to increase their confidence as a leader, but find themselves holding back. In a recent session of mine, an attendee loved the content but didn't know how to confidently give the techniques a try and wanted some advice. This episode breaks down my thinking on how to truly increase your confidence with some simple techniques and mindset shifts.

So many people believe most of your confidence comes from being competent and building skills. Once those skills are built up enough, then you can finally say that you are confident right? But time and time again, I know exactly what to do and how to execute something and then my confidence still waivers.

In this episode, I give you some practical strategies to start increasing your confidence as a leader. I argue that much of your confidence comes from understanding the mechanics of your mind and how your stories really decrease your confidence if you don't question them.

I loved this topic that the attendee brought up at my session and it was a blast thinking through my current beliefs on confidence and how to build it as a leader.

I mentioned I would link the Reality-Based Leadership tools that have given me the confidence to address about any challenge in front of a group I am speaking with. I truly believe if every leader was grounded and fluent in this playlist of tools that they would remain in a constant state of confidence. They are FREE for you to check out and learn!

Hope you enjoy this episode and pass it on to anybody else you think it can help.

Let's keep the drama free movement rolling!

How Clarity Amplifies Your Leadership and Impact Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

Clarity is a secret weapon in leadership. So many of us are unaware of the impact of our level of clarity (or lack there of) we bring to the table and how it influences team dynamics. In a recent team workshop focused mainly on this topic, I had huge learning moments around this topic and how it can greatly improve your leadership and the level of drama on your team.

I’ve realized that clarity is what’s left – after the drama is gone and leaders seek and facilitate more clarity at all times. Here are my top takeaways from the training and some great ideas to make clarity your secret weapon moving forward.

In this episode, you will hear about our team experience that put our ability to get clear to the test over the course of three days and my big takeaways from the experience.

You will leave with 3 super simple, yet effective ideas that will help you be the clearest person in the room when you speak and bring ideas to the table. The ability to do so is a HUGE advantage in your career and in your credibility as you communicate.

For those of you curious about super practical techniques to carve away even more drama as either a leader or someone looking to become a leader - this episode may be one to come back to a few times a year.

Love when I can pass one of my cool experiences off to you to experience as well! That is what this is.

    So for anyone wondering:

    • How to bring clarity as a leader
    • What can I do to lead better teams
    • What are some ideas to lead projects better
    • How to be clear when I speak
    • How to communicate better

Then this episode will be loaded with ideas for you to put to work!

I hope you enjoy and thank you for being the best listeners.

    Let's keep ditching the drama.

How to Maximize Top Talent on Your Team Jan 31, 2019
    Show notes

The famous Steve Jobs quote is "We don't hire the best talent to tell them what to do, we hire the top talent so they can tell us what to do." In this episode, I add my commentary to this quote to ensure top talent stays drama-free in what they suggest for you to do for ideas.

By understanding a few of these filters as a leader you can ensure that you get the best out of your most talented people far into the future without limiting them.

Too often we have incredible people on our teams and we constantly ask them what are their ideas and how could we change the world and maximize their talent.

What tends to happen is they reveal AMAZING ideas and creativity for how to move forward. However, as leaders and the organization looks into executing those ideas they realize that there are constraints in our daily realities that quickly shut down these big ideas.

This constant cycle of asking for brainstorming and creativity from top talent followed by leaders saying, "well we don't have enough dollars or time or bandwidth to pull that off" starts to frustrate everyone, especially top talent.

The magic here comes when leaders realize that adding in an extra step to help ground their teams "in reality" is where true innovation and creativity starts. The quicker a leader can jump into a visual tool or technique to clearly draw out reality and the constraints the group is asked to deliver under, the quicker that top talent can put their energy to where it will ACTUALLY make a difference.

This is what this episode is all about.

Learning the techniques I reveal in this episode will ensure that you can continue to have the best talent tell you "what to do" in the most effective and drama-free way moving forward.

I think you'll like this one!

    So for anyone wondering:

    • How to get the most out of top talent?
    • Why do high-performers sometimes get frustrated?
    • How to reward my best people?
    • How to lead talented people better at work
    • What tools help us innovate faster

Then this episode will be spot on for you!

As always, thanks again for tuning in. Spread the word and share this with any coworkers, friends and peers you think it could help!

Let's keep ditching the drama my friends.

Dealing with "Change for Change's Sake" at Work Jan 19, 2019
    Show notes

Many people who are frustrated with the rapid pace of change in their organizations bring up this concern that their companies are pushing changes just for change's sake.

They are convinced that the company is not being strategic about the direction and reason for many of the changes they are implementing. This episode dives into navigating this frustration and will give you some answers to approach this situation from a place where you can add the most value with the least amount of drama.

Often times, people understand that the world will always be changing, but they are not sold on the fact that change is all-the-time a great thing.

This topic is always a great conversation to get into and I believe this podcast can add a lot of clarity if you find yourself in this situation or mindset about changes going on with your team and organization.

    In this episode we cover:

    • The common myths about change at work that hold us back
    • The 3 "camps" of where people tend to settle in their macro outlook on change in the world that comes their way
    • The TRUE decision-maker of change and the reason to change what we are doing in the workplace
    • What steps to take to actually speak up with expertise (and not your opinion) if you truly believe your organization is spinning their wheels with the changes they are implementing and trying to execute on

All in all this episode will help you ditch the drama greatly in your approach to navigating change in your life and at work.

    So for anyone wondering:

    • How can I get better at being comfortable with change?
    • What do companies that successfully move through change have in common?
    • Why is change so hard for some people at work?
    • How to get better at change
    • Why our company seems to change just for change's sake

Then this episode has some great actionable advice for you to run with!

As always, thanks again for tuning in. Spread the word and share this with any coworkers, friends and peers you think it could help!
