Or maybe you’re the person who’s friends or family seem to judge every action you take. Even though someone’s choices rarely have anything to do with us, it can be a struggle not to take it personally. Ep. 294: The Threat of "Overly Confident" Women Jul 01, 2022
    Show notes

We’re all about female empowerment and confidence building here on The Best Life, but sometimes when we see another woman out there crushing it, our egos take a little hit. Why is that? Maybe we feel a little threatened, or maybe our societal conditioning tells us that women are supposed to be meek and insecure. Frankly, that’s bullshit. There’s a different way forward, and it starts with getting obsessed with your own life first. There’s plenty of confidence for all of us.

Feeling threatened by another woman’s confidence [1:27]

Holding a mirror up to our own insecurities [5:37]

    Cultural shame and “should”s [7:31]

Ep. 293: Abortion, Adoption, and Autonomy Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade case that guaranteed the federal right to an abortion, effectively criminalizing abortion in several states across America. You asked our opinion, so here it is: it’s bullshit. Jill has never been pregnant, Danny has, and gave her daughter up for adoption, but their opinions are the same. A women should have the right to choose. She has the right to bodily autonomy. Adoption is not “the answer” and abortion is not caused by carelessness or a lack of care for human life. Banning abortion won’t save any lives, it only causes more hurt.

The devastation about losing our bodily autonomy [3:06]

Everything wrong with “Just give it up for adoption” [6:12]

Everyone has their own unique situations [9:32]

Why does one subset of belief have to impact everyone else? [11:02]

Nobody asks to be born [12:34]

Abortion is not caused by carelessness [17:19]

The economic issue of unwanted children being born [21:19]

It’s just one piece of a larger problem [23:32]

    Sex-education and birth control [26:15]

Legalizing abortion doesn’t make births stop [30:38]

The commodification of babies (especially white) [31:11]

The infertility and adoption industries are predatory [36:00]

Abortions won’t stop, they’ll just be less safe [37:35]

An opinion is just that: an opinion [39:44]

Be careful with your judgements and assumptions [43:09]

Ep. 292: Overcoming Food Phobias and Exercise Obsession Jun 25, 2022
    Show notes

We’ve spent a lot of our lives obsessing over food and exercise. We see it happen to others all the time: someone finds an extreme regimen that produces results, then they’re terrified to try something new or give up their diet and exercise regime, which leads them to obsession and food phobias. Maybe you feel like extremes are the only way to keep results, but eventually obsession will break you. Take it from us, there is a better way. Your thoughts don’t have to be ruled by food and you don’t have to plan your life around 2+ hours in the gym. Moderation is possible. We know because we live it every day, and we have the Best Life because of it.

Food phobias and the anxiety of trying something new [1:06]

Using fitness and nutrition as a control mechanism [5:16]

You have to keep doing more to see a response [7:07]

At some point, you’ll reach a breaking point [9:48]

Practicing mindfulness in your eating [13:09]

Your metabolism is smarter than you think [16:02]

Food mindfulness is within reach [19:19]

Extreme is always an option, why not try moderation? [22:48]

    Pulling back on over-exercise [24:59]

Advice for coaches and instructors [29:17]

There are always options to get your life back [31:44]

Ep. 291: Trusting yourself to Make Better Decisions Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

If you’ve made bad decisions in the past, how can you feel like you can ever trust yourself again? Whether its a decision about your work, your relationships, or any other life event, nothing crushes your self-trust more than a choice that went “wrong.” But what if it wasn’t a mistake, even if it ended badly? And what if you could give yourself compassion for doing the best you could? What if—this time around—you make your decisions with more self-awareness and self-compassion and trust that no matter the outcome, you can handle it. Maybe that’s the best way to build back your decision-making trust.

How can you trust yourself when you’ve made mistakes in the past? [7:40]

Something that ends doesn’t make it a bad decision [9:23]

You have to actively choose the opposite of familiarity [12:12]

    Self-awareness and self-compassion is key [16:03]

Your view of the world is not abject truth [17:42]

Getting out of the same mental patterns [21:07]

You have to believe you’re worth more [24:12]

Taking responsibility for your choices and actions [26:19]

There is power in knowing, even if it hurts [29:41]

Why not try something different? [32:10]

Ep. 290: Conflicting Values in Personal Life vs. Business Jun 10, 2022
    Show notes

Danny had a business trip planned this weekend… until her boyfriend had emergency surgery to have his appendix removed. Now she’s torn between being a loyal partner, and being loyal to her clients (who she already had to cancel on for this exact meeting). In life, love, and business we often have competing values and priorities, and it’s difficult to know which choice is the right choice. What we think? There isn’t really a “right” or “wrong,” but there are consequences for both. It’s up to you to decide which consequences you can best handle.

    Conflicting values [5:53]

    Feelings of obligation [8:37]

Different isn’t better or worse [11:35]

Know yourself: who are you putting first? [14:14]

    Conflicting feelings of loyalty [15:48]

Personal life vs. professional life [20:51]

Learning a level of mental compartmentalization [23:25]

There’s no right answer, but there are consequences [27:24]

    Communication is really key [31:40]

    Ep. 286: Coveting Someone Else's Body May 27, 2022
    Show notes

You’d be hard pressed to find a woman today who never hated something about her body. Our society is so focused on how we look, and it’s hard not to covet what we can’t have. But that’s the important part: we can’t have it. Sure you have have surgery, you can diet and work out, but so much of how we look comes down to genetics. But you just can’t change your DNA, no matter how badly you wish you could. Instead of channeling your feelings into body hatred, surround yourself with people who make you feel good, learn to love what you have, and realize that we are worth so much more than how we look.

    Coveting other people’s bodies [5:59]

How we look is mostly based on genetics [8:42]

Every body is different and every body is beautiful [10:47]

Find people who make you feel good enough [13:13]

Unfollow what triggers you, but understand why [14:46]

    Tastes will change—yours and society’s [16:56]

Get right with what you have [17:55]

So much of beauty is subjective [21:08]

Your body is not your worth [23:23]

Find what makes you feel good [25:33]

Start with neutrality before you get to love [28:48]

    Confidence is true beauty [30:11]
