Ep. 345: What Happens When Your Mentor Changes Dec 29, 2022
    Show notes

We’re big fans of mentorship here, and we’ve seen the way it has impacted our lives for the better. But hey, just like us, our mentors are people too! That means sometimes we outgrow them, or their practices change, or maybe you just don’t agree on fundamental things anymore. Whatever the case is, you don’t have to write everything off that you learned from them. And hey, sometimes those changes can be great! We’ve had former coaches and clients become dear friends, too. People change, us included, and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Every year is someone’s worst year [1:07]

When our mentors change as people [3:12]

We need different things at different times [4:39]

The dangers of putting someone on a pedestal [7:25]

We all have different skill-sets and specialities [12:13]

Being able to see nuance [16:00]

Coaches and clients can become friends, too [19:06]

The best investment you can make [24:07]

Ep. 344: Relationship Week: How to Disagree (And Still Be Friends) Dec 23, 2022
    Show notes

Everything feels more than just a little contentious these days. People fight on the internet and cut off family or friends over the smallest disagreements. If you ask us, it’s just a little immature. Nobody has to like every single thing you do, or have the exact same opinions! Believe it or not, there’s a way to disagree and still be friends—even on “bigger” issues. Even Danny and Jill don’t agree on everything.

Everyone is in their own online echo-chamber [1:40]

Losing friends over different opinions [2:53]

Engaging in the conversation makes us better [6:32]

Is it immature to cut people out of your life? [7:15]

Allowing space for changing opinions [9:15]

It doesn’t have to be a “hell yes” or a “hell no” [14:47]

To be (or not to be) vaccinated [19:06]

    Self-righteousness and nuance [23:23]

Understand who YOU are and your own actions [25:50]

Respecting opinions, even if you don’t agree [32:10]

    It takes emotional maturity [35:34]

Try seeing things from a different perspective [39:18]

Ep. 343: Relationship Week: Overcoming Food Scarcity and Obsession Dec 21, 2022
    Show notes

To mark the beginning of the holiday season, we are coming at you this week with 4 previously published episodes all about relationships—with the people around us and the food we eat! This time of year can be stressful, and building boundaries requires constant effort, and we hope this refresher course will help you stay on track with YOUR Best Life as we round out 2022.

Yes, food is fuel but it is so much more than that. Food is community and connection, and honestly, sometimes that shit is simply delicious. We used to be those kinds of people who weighed every ounce of food and cried if you asked for a bite—aka, we were obsessed and dysfunctional. Now we can share food without a second thought and it no longer has the same kind of power over us. If you’re stuck in an unhealthy relationship with your food, know that food freedom is possible! It takes a little mindfulness and a lot of practice, but we’re here on the other side, waiting for you to join us (and share a French fry or two).

Food obsession on competition diets [2:32]

    Food scarcity dysfunction [4:11]

Overcoming scarcity by sharing and mindfulness [7:10]

Food can be a way to connect [10:10]

Are you putting food on a pedestal? [12:43]

Moving on from mindsets that no longer serve you [15:34]

Honoring your natural hunger and activity levels [17:06]

Learning to listen to your own body [21:45]

The happiness we have from food freedom [26:04]

You’ll never know unless you try [29:18]

    Show notes

To mark the beginning of the holiday season, we are coming at you this week with 4 previously published episodes all about relationships! This time of year can be stressful, and building boundaries requires constant effort, and we hope this refresher course will help you stay on track with YOUR Best Life as we round out 2022.

A lot of living the Best Life means having open and honest communication with those around you, but sometimes those conversations are difficult AF. If you need to talk with your loved ones, friends, coworkers, or team about something that might be unpleasant, and you need to know where to begin… Start here. Jill has a framework to share that she developed through tons of hard conversations she had to have as she navigated her ex-husband’s infidelity.

    The “nagging woman” stereotype [2:52]

When is the right time to have the hard conversation? [5:26]

What are your deal breakers vs. preferences? [6:06]

    Understanding your own values [8:40]

Leave room for people to be themselves [11:05]

Having patience in your communication [12:36]

Stay curious and ask open questions [16:51]

    Set the stage [20:44]

    State your truth [23:55]

    Stick it out [25:48]

Over time, these conversations get easier [30:17]

You don’t have to be a door mat, but you have to be clinical [31:41]

    Communication needs practice [33:14]

Ep. 341: The Art of Listening Dec 15, 2022
    Show notes

Danny-J has a special skill, and it’s one we could stand to learn from. Danny might just be the world’s best listener. No matter who she’s with or where she is, people just seem to end up telling her their life stories (even Uber drivers, true story) and finding deep connection with her. Being a great listener isn’t as intuitive to most people, but better connections can lead to better experiences and even better friendships. It’s an art form, and one you can learn, too. It all starts with working on our own judgements and projections, and leaning into curiosity. Basically, you just need more therapy. Maybe we all do.

    Curiosity builds life experiences [5:31]

Take an Interest in what interests others [8:09]

    Asking open-ended questions [10:45]

    Coming from a coach’s perspective [13:22]

    A breadth of experiences [17:13]

    Working on your judgement [21:20]

    Staying away from projection [25:58]

Caring about the person vs. the gossip [31:17]

Ep. 340: Changing Goals As We Age Dec 10, 2022
    Show notes

The end of year is a perfect time for reflection, and lately our priorities are shifting. The older we get, the more our goals, priorities, and perspectives change. And it’s not just us, we see it happening all around us every day. Life has many seasons and as you get older, too, you might find yourself craving something a little faster or something a little slower than you’ve had before.

Making business decisions out of panic [7:01]

Goals change as we age [9:30]

Moving towards quiet or building something new [10:43]

    Prioritizing mental health [13:45]

Your insides are more important than the outsides [18:03]

Our relationships aren’t the be-all-end-all of our lives [21:10]

    Diversifying relationships [26:44]

Money matters less than it used to [29:59]

    Impress yourself before others [36:10]

Ep. 339: Relationships with Age Gaps Dec 08, 2022
    Show notes

They say age is just a number, but let’s be honest, it’s an important number, especially when it comes to relationships. There are some age gaps that feel “okay” and some that just seem wrong, but is it all arbitrary? Danny and Jill were the younger partner in their previous relationships, and now they’re on the other side. Age isn’t something to be ignored, but it might be possible that there are more important things to base a relationship on.

    Age-gap relationships [1:19]

    Does the number matter? [5:14]

Trying out people of different ages [8:05]

    The difference between genders [10:38]

Sexual chemistry is huge, too [13:17]

    Gaps in emotional maturity [15:25]

Ep. 338: Finding A Great Travel Buddy Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

We love to travel, and by now we’re pretty expert at it. But just because we’ve perfected the art, doesn’t mean the people we sometimes travel with have, and let’s be real here: that shit is stressful. Everyone has a different travel technique, different wants on a vacation, and different ways to handle stress. If you want to travel with a loved one and still love them by the end of the trip, it’ll take a whole lot of communication and more than likely, a whole lot of planning, too.

Traveling with a partner is hard! [2:21]

    Being easy-going and adaptable [3:30]

    Your values and compromise [5:41]

What’s the goal of the trip? [8:21]

    Having an abundant mentality [14:20]

    Always bring snacks [16:14]

Someone needs to be decisive [19:26]

Find your perfect travel outfit [21:26]

    If it’s not a fit, it’s not a fit [24:01]

Ep. 337: The "Right" Way to Show PDA Nov 30, 2022
    Show notes

Everyone has an opinion on PDA. Maybe you love getting some but hate watching others do it, or maybe you feel too self-conscious to ever think about it! You might even think that couples who practice some “power” PDA are over-compensating for something (and hey, you wouldn’t be alone in thinking that). In our experience, people generally love to see love, but at what point does PDA go from adorable to deplorable? Do public figures have an obligation to keep their brands PDA free? Do you need PDA from your partner to feel loved? As in most things in this life, what’s true for us won’t be true for you!

“Power” PDA on social media [1:06]

    Personal PDA preferences [2:52]

The difference of doing vs. watching [5:55]

It’s not unprofessional to show affection [9:18]

Being mindful of your brand [11:16]

    Feelings of skepticism [14:42]

    Is PDA projecting? [17:00]

    Every couple is different [20:31]

Ep. 336: The Things We No Longer Buy Nov 26, 2022
    Show notes

It’s Black Friday which means we’re all inundated with sales of every kind and it got us thinking about all the things we used to spend our money on, but don’t anymore. We spent our 20’s body-obsessed and image focused which meant that most of our money and time was spent on being the skinniest versions of ourselves. We can’t say it was money well spent, but we’re glad there are more important things to us, now.

An obsession with gossip magazines [1:42]

Sugar-free gum and artificial sweeteners [6:59]

Constant GI upset from poor eating [10:01]

Protein supplements and food swaps [15:55]

Bath and body works beauty products [21:35]

The time to care about what really matters [23:23]

    No more underwear (mostly) [24:57]
