Ep. 394: Reflections on Losing a Parent Jun 16, 2023
    Show notes

It’s been almost 2 years since Danny’s mom passed away, and we’ve had some time to reflect on what it means to lose a parent. Grief is complicated and weird and all-consuming and even though so many people have gone through it, there still isn’t a “right” way to experience loss. Life, and especially loss, is never quite what you imagine it would be, and nothing you could ever prepare for. If you’ve lost someone, or will lose someone soon, we see you, we hear you, we’re with you.

Ep. 392: Building Connection with Conflicting Love Languages Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

By now, pretty much everyone is familiar with the 5 Love Languages. We know what ways we like to be loved, and we’re not shy about asking for love in the perfect way. Seems straight forward enough, but what happens when the person you’re trying to build connection and intimacy with has a conflicting Love Language? Is your relationship doomed? Of course not! As in all things, a good relationship comes down to communication, and getting clear on exactly what you need in order to feel loved by your partner. If it means you might have to fake each others’ love languages for a while, then that might be exactly what you have to do.

Ep. 391: Why We Don't Care About Men with Dr. Jade Teta Jun 07, 2023
    Show notes

If you asked us if we supports men’s rights, we’d probably say yes. Of course, only if the “rights” you’re talking about is the right to shut the fuck up. Okay, okay just kidding. We have no real hate for men at all, but sometimes we find ourselves wondering why we should care about the struggles men are facing when they’re the ones who are hurting themselves (and women too!). Who better to talk about the problems men are facing than an actual, real life man?! We’re so excited to chat with Dr. Jade Teta about the (fake) problems that men are dealing with today.

Why should we care about men’s issues? [1:15]

Men need men, but there are no role models [5:35]

How men work through their mental health issues [9:17]

All humans want the same things [18:46]

    Balancing the masculine/feminine dynamic [29:39]

How to speak the language of men [37:51]

    Elevating the conversation [44:42]

The trap of social media [53:15]

The power and popularity matrix [59:55]

Purpose is the only way to get your needs met [1:04:34]

Ep. 390: Relating To Friends With Different Parenting Choices Jun 02, 2023
    Show notes

Making the decision to have or not to have kids is deeply personal, and as we’re getting older the divide between those who do and those who do not seems to be getting wider. We’re childfree by choice, but we do have friends with children, so how do we keep those relationships up? How do you relate to someone with such a different lifestyle? Sometimes people grow apart, and that’s okay! But even if you can’t always relate to their life, you can still always remain friends.

Making the decision not to have kids [1:34]

Two parties that can’t relate to each other [3:20]

    Dynamics change—and that’s okay [8:19]

    Different parenting styles [10:42]

Sometimes people just grow apart [16:31]

    Moms vs. Dads [19:37]

It’s okay to make different life choices [23:08]

Parents need a life outside of kids, too [24:53]

Ep. 389: Money Talks in an Unmarried Relationship May 31, 2023
    Show notes

There’s a societal expectation that when you get married, you merge your finances. So what happens to couples in long term, committed relationships without marriage? Finances are a deeply personal, and oftentimes tricky, subject to talk about. Everyone has different money rules and expectations that affect how we split expenses and costs with our partners. Throw in the unreliable income of entrepreneurship and things get even stickier. There’s no “right way” to deal with money, but there’s never a wrong time to have an open conversation about it with your partner—whether you’re married or not.

    Mixing finances as a non-married couple [8:15]

Deciding which expenses to split [9:07]

The conversations come up as they need to [13:04]

Unspoken rules for splitting costs [16:23]

    Income discrepancies [18:03]

What happens with variable incomes [22:09]

    A constantly changing conversation [28:51]

Is separate accounts a lack of commitment? [30:48]

Ep. 387: The Drama in an Unfollow May 24, 2023
    Show notes

Maybe we’re taking social media a little too seriously, but getting an unfollow from someone you know irl feels like a stab in the back. Logically, we know social media isn’t “real” and people have the right to see whatever kind of posts they want, but that doesn’t stop us from getting our feelings hurt—or the reverse: feeling guilty when we’re the ones doing the unfollowing. We may be more connected to others than ever before, but there are no social rules and norms for online behavior and it’s got us feeling some type of way.

The guilt of following and unfollowing people you know [2:08]

Using social media as a replacement for connection [5:13]

The subtleties of life that Insta can’t show [6:55]

    Feeling like a villain [9:34]

    Purging your following [13:04]

When to unfollow vs. when to block [16:38]

    Family has different rules [21:08]

Never follow anyone in the first place [22:50]

Ep. 386: Influencer Body Transformations May 19, 2023
    Show notes

We talk a lot about what influencer are and are not obligated to share, and when someone goes through a big body transformation, should they tell their following how they got there? Of course nobody owes anything to anyone, but when you make a career out of sharing your life online, the rules change. People look to the influencers they follow for advice, and if you’re using your body to sell a product, we think you should be upfront about how you got where you are. Honesty and authenticity always win out.

An obligation to share your body changes? [4:03]

    Selling requires honesty [7:48]

Is you brand based on honesty and integrity? [10:22]

Owning your choices gives you credibility [13:34]
