    Show notes

Jill’s back with a solo-pod today to speak to those listeners who are more entrepreneurial minded, coaches, managers, or leaders of any kind. Ep. 434: Fighting Distraction in An Attention Economy Nov 03, 2023
    Show notes

As technology and media develop further and become more important parts of our lives, our attention is getting spread thin. As a result, we’ve all become pretty bad listeners. You probably don’t even realize it—most people tend to believe they’re much better at listening than they actually are—but very few people feel truly listened to and understood. We think we’re pretty self-aware of our attention habits, but even we find ourselves reaching for our phones and distraction every few seconds. Distraction hurts us everywhere—in our work, relationships, even our health. Is phone freedom an attainable goal?

We’ve gotten worse at listening [2:10]

A lack of listening can ruin relationships [6:46]

Our attention spans keep getting shorter [8:14]

    Passive-agressive scroll warfare [10:47]

Practice staying present and getting uncomfortable [17:14]

    A loneliness epidemic [19:08]

Showing genuine interest in others [22:19]

    Having phone freedom [28:04]

Ep. 433: Is Cleaning the Secret to Success? Nov 01, 2023
    Show notes

Is the secret to success as simple as making your bed? It’s been said that cleaning is the ultimate life-hack—declutter your desk to declutter your mind, clean up your finances to make even more money, make your bed and you’re on the fast-track to success. Sure, it sounds nice in theory but like most soundbytes in personal development, there’s more than meets the eye. Sure, cleaning up your life might set you up for success, but is that really the thing that’ll make or break you? There are just as many successful people who make their bed every morning as there are who just roll out of bed and start the day. It’s a great first step, but it’s not the only thing that matters. The real question is, what’s the first step *you* need to take to get you to the next level?

Is cleaning an underrated hack? [2:24]

Use your energy on things that actually move the dial [4:02]

Your routine won’t make you rich [7:25]

Start small, and grow from there [10:16]

Outcome shouldn’t dictate your effort [13:03]

    Causation vs. correlation [16:46]

What is the first step to get to the next level? [18:42]

Ep. 432: Yanking Yourself Out of Scarcity Oct 27, 2023
    Show notes

It’s easy to feel all good when everything’s all good… but having an abundant mindset is a big ask when money is tight or business isn’t doing well. When our finances feel out of control, how the hell are we supposed to yank ourselves out of scarcity?! While we can’t control everything in life, sometimes the answer lies in focusing on the things you do have power over, including bettering yourself, in order to build the confidence you need. Sometimes life can throw a wrench in our plans, but trusting ourselves to figure out whatever comes our way is the best way to find abundance again.

It’s easy to feel abundant when things are going well [1:22]

Finding something you can control [5:21]

The confidence to know you got this [8:31]

    Taking a financial risk [10:36]

    Feeling hopeless and helpless [13:35]

    Having a pivot mindset [17:38]

The best investment you can make is in yourself [21:02]

Ep. 431: Online, Everyone Loses Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

Is it just us, or does everyone seem to make everything about them nowadays? Look, we aren’t calling everybody a narcissist (or maybe we are…) but it seems like anytime we talk about ourselves, someone out there gets mad that we didn’t take into account their very specific situation. We know it’s impossible to please everyone, but lately it feels impossible to please anyone. Posting about your life online is vulnerable and haters come with the territory, but has social media become a zero-sum game? Does anybody win this "game"? Does any of this even matter?

On social media, everyone loses [5:42]

    Taking things too personally [9:36]

    Hyper-focusing on unimportant details [13:09]

    Owning your shit [17:02]

Knowing what is for you and what’s not [19:54]

If you don’t like it, you don’t have to look [24:08]

Don’t let the peanut gallery hold you back [28:25]

We all have the right to our opinions [33:03]

    Ep. 430: Becoming Sober-Curious Oct 20, 2023
    Show notes

We’ve seen something interesting, and maybe you have too, but there seems to be a cultural shift away from drinking alcohol. After our marriages ended, we spent a lot more time drinking than we’d care to admit, but lately things feel a little bit different. The pull to drink feels less and less strong, and we aren’t the only people who seem to be feeling it. Alcohol is a poison, and even though it can create some fun times, maybe it’s for the best that we pull away. But hey, if we still want a cocktail, you know we’re gonna have one, just maybe a little more mindfully this time around.

    Becoming sober-curious [1:01]

    Stumbling into sobriety [3:31]

    Craving alcohol again [10:03]

The “benefits” of going sober [13:20]

    Keeping the stakes low [15:23]

    Societal obligations to drink [19:33]

Working through the story of what alcohol “does” [23:19]

Shame is a lousy motivator [25:32]

    A cultural shift [30:43]

Replacing one vice for another [34:40]

Ep. 429: Relationships Are Made In the Details Oct 18, 2023
    Show notes

We talk a lot about communication on this podcast, but can you blame us? So many struggles and conflicts in our lives and relationships could be easily prevented or solved if we just communicated openly. No one is a mind reader and we can’t expect anyone—and especially our partners—to read the subtext of the things we say if we don’t communicate our feelings explicitly. Relationships are made up of little moments, and when you give each other the best chance at succeeding, you set your entire relationship up for success.

    Redefining what is “important” [1:28]

Relationships are made + broken in the details [6:40]

A pattern of feeling disrespected [8:12]

    Unspoken expectations [10:20]

    Becoming a “nag” [13:13]

Arguments hiding a deeper insecurity [15:11]

The differences between men and women [18:52]

Being true to your word [23:07]

It all comes back to communication [27:05]

    Show notes

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day and as people who are no strangers to mental health struggles, we wanted to talk about something near and dear to us—talk therapy. Going to see a psychologist used to carry a huge stigma, that therapy is only for “crazy” people, but Besties, let’s be real for a sec. We don’t know a single person who couldn’t benefit from seeing a therapist every now and again. Taking care of your mental health is hard work, and daunting! If you need help with where to start, look no further. We gotchu.

Ep. 426: Men's Use of Social Media Oct 07, 2023
    Show notes

Should men have rights? The jury is still out on that one, but for now it seems like they still do and one of those rights we can’t seem to take away from them is social media use. We’re kidding (of course!) but we’ve been noticing a lot of issues when it comes to some men’s use of social media. Everywhere you turn there’s someone posting sexualized pictures of themselves—and good for them! The problem isn’t the photos, it’s the fact that some men in relationships don’t seem to care when the act of looking at these pictures upsets their partner. Is this our fault for being insecure, or are men just immature?

    Men vs. Instagram [1:15]

Who are you following and why? [3:39]

    Is this micro-cheating? [6:54]

We have a right to our feelings [9:23]

    There are consequences [18:31]

Dating someone with a following [21:48]

It’s not “just” social media [30:12]
