TAP 395 - Former NHL Player Clint Malarchuk On Playing Pro Sports with Mental Health Issues, Nearly Dying 3 Times & The Crazy Game - Rerun Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

    Summary:

In this episode Clint Malarchuk shares some truly amazing stories about his life.

Malarchuk is best known for having survived a life-threatening injury during a 1989 NHL game when another player's skate blade sliced his carotid artery and jugular vein, causing immediate massive blood loss.

We discuss his time as an NHL goaltender, how he nearly died 3 times and how he suffered from Anxiety, depression and OCD. Clint's story is massively courageous and today he speaks publicly about his struggle for the benefit of others.

No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating and as stress-ridden as that of a hockey goaltender. Standing in the crease facing one-hundred-mile-an-hour slapshots, the entire game riding on your glove hand, standing on your head when necessary-all job requirements for those wanting to be the best goalies in the world. Now imagine doing that job while suffering high anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, and having your career nearly literally cut short by a skate across your neck.

The Crazy Game takes you deep into the troubled mind of Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres. Even as a boy, Malarchuk faced such deep anxiety that he missed school and acted out at school and with his friends. His OCD changed the way he trained, and he was almost always the last player off the ice. When his throat was slashed during a collision in the crease, Malarchuk nearly died on the ice. Forever changed, he struggled deeply with depression and a dependence on alcohol, which nearly cost him his life and left a bullet in his head.

    Show notes

    Summary:

Here is a link to the Leo Babauta article: http://zenhabits.net/tsukubai/

Here is the link to the Mark Manson article: https://markmanson.net/everything-you-need

In this particular episode you will learn:

    - Things in life will come and go but it's important to believe that things will work out in the end

    - If you lost everything today and had to start again you'd actually be ok

    - It's not the people or objects in life that make you happy, only you can do that

    - We are often looking externally for a solution but it's actually within us

    - How our needs are met with food, water, people and shelter etc

    - Why a gratitude practice is so important

    - Do we really need all the stuff we consume

Here are the rituals from the Leo Babauta article:

    1. Wake up and say a little prayer of thanks for what you have in your life.
    2. Keep a one-paragraph gratitude journal every evening.
    3. When you meet someone, bow to them (in your mind) out of respect. You might touch your heart or offer them a smile if that helps.
    4. When you eat, say a little prayer of thanks to everyone who made your meal possible (farmers, cooks, transporters, their families, etc.). Appreciate every bite if you can.
    5. Before you start a new activity (a work task, a workout, a meeting), pause and ask yourself what your intention is for this activity. Is it focused on helping others?
    6. When you are done with an activity, show respect for others, your environment and your equipment by respectfully and mindfully cleaning up, instead of rushing to the next activity.
