    Preventing Childhood Suicide: Preteen Girl Aims to Save Lives Jan 20, 2026

    Content Warning: This episode discusses Suicide and Death by Suicide


    National Institutes of Health research has shown an alarming increase in the rates of preteen suicide, up 8% in ages 8-12 since 2008. This week on Talks with Dr Shafer, Dr Shafer sits down with Sho Williamson and Tammy Williamson for an important discussion on preteen suicide risk and awareness. Sho, a 6th grade student in Pellston, Michigan, has been raising awareness for suicide prevention among kids after her young cousin died by suicide. Sho, Tammy and their community have rallied together to help others suffering from thoughts of self harm and to raise awareness about resources available to people in crisis. Tammy, who lost her sister to suicide, and Sho went about fundraising for special Suicide Awareness Benches to place in their community high school and veterans park to help those suffering to know that they world is a better place with them in it, and give some tools to help them stay another day.
