230 - How to Beat Long-haul COVID with Dr. Melissa Mondala & Dr. Micah Yu May 17, 2023
    Show notes

Today's guests are on a mission to empower patients and accelerate change in the way medicine is practiced. They are husband and wife practitioners of functional and integrative medicine and experienced huge improvements in their own health by switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet. Dr. Micah Yu is an integrative rheumatologist and he has a unique perspective as both a physician and a patient because he was diagnosed with gout—a form of inflammatory arthritis that's extremely painful—at the age of 17. Dr. Melissa Mondala is a triple specialist in family medicine, lifestyle medicine, and primary care psychiatry. She's one of the first and youngest nationally recognized lifestyle medicine fellows and has devoted decades of volunteer work in underserved communities throughout the world.

With the firm belief that lifestyle medicine should be the foundation for healthcare, this dynamic duo combined their experience and passion for opening their Newport Beach private practice called Dr. Lifestyle, where they've seen patients improve and even reverse disease. "Patients can get random rashes in long-haul COVID, shortness of breath, micro clots in their lungs causing shortness of breath. So I have patients in their twenties and thirties who are high functioning and doing very well but are now barely able to walk out of the house because they're so fatigued from their issues and short of breath. So there are a whole host of different symptoms of long-haul COVID, and COVID itself can spark different autoimmune diseases as well. I've seen this spark rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases. So, we can have a long discussion on COVID and long-haul COVID today." - Dr. Micah Yu

What we discuss in this episode:

    • How Dr. Mondala and Dr. Yu began their plant-based diet journey and how it profoundly impacted both of their lives.

    • What a Blue Zone is and the requirements and characteristics of a Blue Zone.

    • How Dr. Yu developed gout and how a plant-based diet and lifestyle changes put his gout in remission.

    • The symptoms of long-haul COVID.

    • How the human body fights viruses.

    • How Dr. Mondala and Dr. Yu have treated patients with long-haul COVID.

229 - The Language of Veganism with Author Colleen Patrick-Goudreau May 10, 2023
    Show notes

The work of fighting to make the world a better place for all sentient beings can be fraught with adversity, leaving even the most resolute of us disheartened at times. And that's why we're so thankful for today's guest, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau because she's a breath of fresh air and an exemplar of how thought leaders can inspire change through the power of positivity. Known as the Joyful Vegan, Colleen is a long-time animal activist, producer, and host of the podcasts Animalogy and Food For Thought, host of vegan trips all over the world, and bestselling author of seven books. She's also been a regular contributor to NPR. She's appeared on the Food Network, and her recipes have been featured on Oprah.com.

Always optimistic, extremely persuasive, and very quotable, we are super thrilled to welcome her to the show today!

"We have cognitive dissonance, and that means we're having difficulty holding two ideas at the same time. And that creates dissonance. That creates discomfort. And in order to reconcile that discomfort, we have to either change our behavior or we have to change our thinking about our behavior. And so that's what we do when it comes to the animals we love and the animals we eat." - Colleen Patrick-Goudreau

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Colleen's upbringing and how she became vegan.

    • How we become conditioned to eat meat, and how we can change our behavior.

    • Why some people experience fear when considering a plant-based diet.

    • Colleen's tips for anyone considering going vegan.

    • How language shapes attitudes toward animals.

    • How human behavior can invite unwanted animal interactions.

    • The benefits of not overusing the word "vegan."

228 - Find Yourself through Travel with VegVoyages Founder Zac Lovas May 03, 2023
    Show notes

Have you ever dreamed of having unparalleled access to the culture, people, and mouthwatering vegan cuisine of such faraway lands as India, Thailand, or Indonesia? Ever wanted to step off the beaten path and experience an exotic locale in an authentic way, generally reserved for locals? Today's guest can provide precisely what you're looking for and more. Zac Lovas is the co-founder of Vegan Travel Asia by VegVoyages. This vegan cultural adventure tour company brings you an immersive experience that will leave you enriched and forever changed.

It's Zac's extensive background in the film industry that brought him to India initially, which brings us full circle because it's another reason why we're very excited to have him here—to discuss his work on Maa Ka Doodh, the gutsy documentary that takes an unflinching look at India's Dairy Industry.

"Even to this day, about 20 to 30 percent, I would say roughly of our guests are nonveg, but they are vegan when they're with us. And they always say right at the beginning, because, again, preconceived notions people have that we don't really eat. Vegans really don't eat. You know? We only eat salads and side dishes, and it's all bland. And so they always come up, usually in the first day or so, and say, 'Hey, you know what, look, I may have to duck out on a meal, or another meal,' and they'll go grab something, and by the time we get to the end of it, and I even will say, because we have one free night or something where people can go out on their own, and I say 'this is your opportunity if you wanted to go out,' and they're like, 'no way. Are you kidding?'" - Zac Lovas

What we discuss in this episode:

    • What it was like for Zac to move to India at the age of 18.

    • How he transitioned from working in the film industry to creating a tour company.

    • What differentiates his vegan tour company from others.

    • The countries his company explores.

    • How living abroad has changed his worldview.

    • Zac's travel tips for first-time travelers to Asia.

    • Insights into the making of the documentary Maa Ka Doodh, and the truth about what's happening to cows in India.

226 - Animal Protein without the Animal with Every Company Founder Arturo Elizondo Apr 19, 2023
    Show notes

The exciting story of today's remarkable guest, entrepreneur Arturo Elizondo, started in the border city of Laredo, Texas. But his innate curiosity and desire to effect positive changes in the world led him to the hallowed halls of Harvard University, to study food security in Geneva, and even to an internship at the White House. But it was really his time spent with the United States Department of Agriculture that truly opened his eyes and changed him forever. And with so many incredible opportunities within his grasp, Arturo took a long hard look at our broken food system. He looked at the environmental devastation it inflicts, the toll it takes on human health, and the cruelty inherent in animal agriculture. That's when he decided to do something about it.

Today he's the co-founder and CEO of The EVERY Company – a revolutionary food technology company based in San Francisco that's creating a healthy, planet-friendly protein that people know and love, without the animal! "We're focused on becoming the infrastructure to the food industry broadly, and to help support and enable every food company to transition their ingredients from animal-based products, in a way still like animal proteins, but without using the animals. So you can make the same cakes and cookies and omelets and frittatas and protein shakes and powders, but all without having to use an animal." - Arturo Elizondo

What we discuss in this episode:

    • How a philosophy class at Harvard inspired Arturo's transition to veganism.

    • How curiosity has been integral to his success.

    • The transformational experiences he had while working at the USDA.

    • How The EVERY Company is aiming to change our food system.

    • The origins of meat as a staple in Latin American diets.

    • How he survived in San Francisco while pursuing his dream.

225 - An Inflammation Nation with Dr. Sunil Pai Apr 12, 2023
    Show notes

"Inflammation", is a word most people don't think about until they're confronted with it. In fact, many of us are living with inflammation right now and don't even know it. Why does this ultimately matter though? Because inflammation is the precursor to disease.

Fortunately, the guest we have with us today is an authority on this very subject.

Author, radio host, health activist, and thought leader in the wellness industry, Dr. Sunil Pai is an expert in Integrative Medicine, and one of the first board-certified MDs in Holistic Integrative Medicine in the United States. In his book, "An Inflammation Nation: The Definitive 10-step Guide to Preventing, Treating and Reversing All Diseases Through Diet, Lifestyle and the Use of Natural Anti-Inflammatories," he offers evidence-based solutions to defeat this silent adversary.

So, for anyone out there currently suffering from chronic inflammation, or trying to prevent it from rearing its ugly head, this is an episode you definitely don't want to miss!

"Let me just get cleaner food. Cleaner didn't get anybody healthier. It just kind of made us have the bragging right that we were buying something that was more expensive. But at the end of the day, their cholesterol is still the same, their inflammation is still the same, and morbidity and mortality still the same. So organic versus non-organic meats didn't show anything. So even though we all did that, when I used to be that way, I used to make sure my eggs came from Taos and they did yoga and sung Kumbaya, and then my massaged beef from Japan. And, you know, I was the guy that was just like that, but that didn't improve anything in terms of the numbers or lowering my risk of diseases going forward." - Dr. Sunil Pai

What we discuss in this episode:

    • What it means to have inflammation in the body.

    • The difference between acute and chronic inflammation.

    • How inflammation becomes a disease.

    • Common causes of inflammation and how to reduce it.

    • How inflammation can attack specific locations in the body.

    • How a plant-based diet reduces inflammation.

    • The importance of testing for food sensitivities.

    • Dr. Pai's 10-step approach to reducing inflammation.

    • NSAIDs and the deterioration of the microbiome.

    • How meditation decreases inflammation and strengthens immune function.

224 - Pain-Free Living with Physical Therapist, Author & Body Guru Eileen Kopsaftis Apr 05, 2023
    Show notes

When it comes to aging, the general school of thought is that pain and deterioration are just part of the deal. But what if it doesn't have to be this way? What if there was a way to mitigate, or even reverse this decline? What if there was a way to feel younger and stronger? Fortunately, our expert today, Eileen Kopsaftis, can talk about common misconceptions around aging and show us why there's nothing natural about physical deterioration.

Eileen is a physical therapist, founder of Have Lifelong Wellbeing, author of the book Pain Culprits: Surprising Truths Behind Pain, How to Uncover the Cause, and What to Do about It, and for over two decades, she's been helping people resolve pain and experience lasting wellbeing.

Today, she's with us to discuss what it means to actually age well, and dramatically improve the quality of your life!

"If someone has back pain, it's almost never their back. Even if things show up on imaging because there is really no correlation between what shows up on imaging and the symptoms people experience. There has been study after study after study after study that shows just as many people have a bulging disk and no pain, as there are those who do have pain. Now, I'm not saying the disc would never cause pain, but the majority of the time it's not what shows up on imaging that's actually causing the problem." - Eileen Kopsaftis

What we discuss in this episode:

    • How chronic pain and aging don't have to go hand in hand

    • The three main areas that need extra attention in the body

    • The planes of motion the human body moves in

    • The way muscles work in the body during movement

    • Common causes of low back pain

    • Causes of incontinence and how to prevent, mitigate or reverse incontinence caused by weakness

    • Chronic inflammation and diet

    • The importance of hydration and what happens to the body when it's dehydrated

    • The importance of hip mobility and exercises you can do for your hips

223 - Alexandra is Not in Jail Mar 29, 2023
    Show notes

On Friday, March 17th, after nearly six hours of deliberation, and facing up to six months in jail if convicted, Alexandra Paul and co-defendant Alicia Santurio were acquitted by a California jury of the alleged crime of taking two sick, slaughter-bound chickens from a Foster Farms truck in Livingston, California. Prosecutors called it stealing, but Alexandra and Alicia called it a rescue.

From accused to acquittal, in this very special episode, we get to hear the story from Alexandra herself, including all the riveting behind-the-scenes details of what led these two courageous activists to set out to expose the cruelty of poultry slaughter, and demonstrate why they had the right to rescue these two sentient beings in the first place.

"So I'll tell you what open rescue is and then I'll explain what happened that day. Open rescue is when animal investigators go into places where there has been claims of abuse or suspicions of abuse, like factory farms, and we document what we see. And if there is an animal who is sick and needs immediate medical care, for whom we have a sanctuary because it's very hard to find placement for animals, then we will take that animal out of that facility with us. And we do not hide our faces. In fact, the video of myself and Alicia rescuing Ethan and Jax was publicized within the hour on the internet with our names. And the reason we do this is because we believe that what we're doing is legal." - Alexandra Paul

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Alexandra's detailed account of jury selection

    • What the right to rescue is and why it's so important

    • How and why Alexandra and Alicia were acquitted

    • Why Alexandra and Alicia rescued chickens Ethan and Jax

    • The inhumane acts taking place in chicken slaughterhouses

    • Why the trial took nine days

    • The last-minute trick the prosecutor pulled during closing statements
