221 - From On the Ice to Behind the Mic with Georges Laraque Mar 15, 2023

220 - How to Deal with Chronic Pain with Dr. Andrea Furlan Mar 08, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today is an award-winning pain specialist with decades of experience helping patients with chronic pain achieve a better quality of life. Dr. Andrea Furlan is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Staff Physician and Senior Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. In her new book, 8 Steps to Conquer Chronic Pain: A Doctor's Guide to Lifelong Relief, Dr. Furlan shares science-backed solutions to beat pain that she has seen work in her own practice.

So for anyone out there suffering in silence, or for those who have a loved one dealing with chronic pain, this episode is a must-listen!

"We all have pain here and there. Now, if this pain happens in a person that has the amygdala super active, they will respond with an exaggerated fear response. And that fear of pain after the injury heals is related to the perpetuation of the pain itself. So that's how the pain transitions from acute to chronic, because the injury heals, but the fear of pain continues." - Dr. Andrea Furlan

What we discuss in this episode:

    • How Dr. Furlan became interested in pain management

    • How opioid addiction starts

    • The difference between acute pain and chronic pain, and how acute pain transitions to chronic pain

    • How emotions affect pain and regulate what we feel physically

    • How you can improve your body's "inner pharmacy" and become more resistant to pain

    • Natural anti-inflammatory recommendations

    • Recommendations to cope with different types of headaches

    Show notes

What does it take to become a successful vegan entrepreneur? Today's guest can tell you. Lauren Joyner grew up, like so many people, eating a diet rich in meat, dairy and processed foods. For her family, queso was a staple on the dinner table. However, as an adult, working as a tech startup designer, something changed. She made the switch to a plant-based diet and began taking an interest in creating delicious, nutritious plant-based alternatives to the comfort foods she ate growing up.

"I had no background or knowledge of the food industry. I didn't have a background with food science. You know, I started out just genuinely trying to play around for myself. I felt that the products that were available to me in the grocery store that I was buying, and that are delicious, and that I love, they just didn't quite capture that junk-food taste I was going after. They tasted a little bit more of a, it just had a different taste and texture, and while delicious, in and of itself, it didn't replicate that Velveeta, that Tostitos dip that I was still craving."

217 - Overcoming Lyme Disease through Dry Fasting with Michelle Slater Feb 15, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today, Michelle Slater, is a true testament to the enduring power of the human spirit. She suffered symptoms from late-stage neurological Lyme disease for six years, symptoms so devastating, so utterly debilitating, that after exhausting every possible treatment—from allopathic to holistic—she actually considered assisted suicide. But in the face of seemingly impossible odds, she had the courage and resolve to take one final leap of faith, traveling all the way to Siberia, of all places. Literally Siberia. And it was in that far corner of the world that she submitted herself to the unorthodox treatment of dry fasting, and found what she was seeking. Five years later, she's thriving and completely symptom-free. A scholar of comparative literature with a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, Michelle's remarkable story is chronicled in her new book Starving to Heal in Siberia: My Radical Recovery from Late-Stage Lyme Disease and How It Could Help Others.

It's such an inspiring story. We're so happy to have her with us today and hopefully provide hope for anyone facing a similar plight.

"I think that in terms of killing off disease, there's nothing like dry fasting. And I think that even for maintenance of the immune system, a 24-hour dry fast is a great way to go. And really something that anyone can practice if they, you know, you don't want to go and have a steak and dry fast the next day. And if you're just tapering and somewhat plant-based, then you can kind of jump into it pretty easily. But I do include Dr. Filonov's protocol in my book."

    - Michelle Slater

What we discuss in this episode:

    • What Lyme disease is and why it's so hard to diagnose

    • How Dr. Slater got Lyme disease and how it affected her life

    • What dry fasting is

    • The relationship between water and inflammation

    • Her experience in Siberia

216 - Saving Lives through Diet with Cardiologist & Real Life Hero Dr. Steven Lome Feb 08, 2023
    Show notes

Today's guest grew up, like so many of us, on the Standard American Diet. But after watching the seminal documentary, Forks Over Knives, Dr. Steven Lome charted a new course in his life, both personally and professionally, by adopting a vegan diet, losing 100 pounds, and spreading the message about the healing power of plants. Dr. Lome is a board certified cardiologist, the founder of the Plant Based Nutrition Movement, and a member of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, where he fights to improve America's diet at a legislative level. And, you may have heard about him in the news recently for his heroics at the Monterey Bay Half Marathon.

We're super excited to have him here today to share his passion for plant-based eating, and discuss the benefits it has on cardiovascular health.

"Maybe 20 percent of being healthy is exercise, but 80 percent of it is diet. Predominantly diet related. And I've been a cardiologist in practice for almost thirteen years now. I've seen at least a dozen or more ironman triathletes, marathon runners, elite cyclists, end up having significant heart disease, coronary artery disease, despite how much they exercise. If you're not focusing on eating a very healthy diet that keeps your cholesterol numbers low, protects your endothelium from damage and inflammation, it doesn't matter how much you exercise." - Dr. Steven Lome

What we discuss in this episode:

    • How a plant-based diet transformed Dr. Lome's health.

    • How to overcome the challenges of getting children to eat plant based.

    • Saturated fats, LDLs and heart disease.

    • The myths of olive oil consumption and health.

    • How processed foods inflame and damage arteries.

    • How to keep your endothelium healthy.

    • His work with the Plant Based Nutrition Movement.

    • How plant-based eating affects artery blockage.

215 - Fuel Your Body Right with Badass Vegan Athlete, Author & Entrepreneur John Lewis Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

Today's guest was on Episode 43, and we're so happy he's on again to talk about his upcoming book and new documentary! From the rough-and-tumble streets of Ferguson, Missouri, to the tropical shores of Miami, Florida, Vegan Badass John Lewis has an inspiring story. Growing up on a diet practically devoid of fresh fruits and vegetables, and weighing in at over 300 pounds when he was just thirteen, John decided to make a change. He immersed himself in basketball and football excellence, changed his diet and his life.

Flash-forward to today and he's a renowned fitness expert, speaker, author, and director/producer of the documentary They're Trying to Kill Us. John is also on the front lines of social justice – sharing his passion, infectious energy, and belief in the healing powers of plants to change the world.

"We don't even call them food deserts anymore. We call them nutrition deserts because there is food in these areas, it's just there's no nutrition in these areas. So the food that they're getting is not the most nutritious. I mean, you can find a bodega somewhere, you can find a corner store, you can find a liquor store with snacks in it. So there's food there, but there's no nutrition there. And that's where we're having all these problems because the options aren't available." - John Lewis

What we discuss in this episode:

    • John's new book
    • His suggestions for anyone considering making a switch to a vegan diet
    • How civil rights and human health are connected

214 - Healing Trauma with Wellness Guru Ella Magers Jan 25, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today knew her calling at a much younger age than most of us. A fitness enthusiast, environmentalist and outspoken animal rights activist before she was even 15, Ella Magers is today a fitness coach, an author, and the founder of Sexy Fit Vegan. She's been on a personal quest to help people change their attitudes toward food and wellness, and she has the international following to prove it. Ella was named one of the top 50 trainers in America by Shape magazine and Trainer Of The Month by bodybuilding.com. Armed with a master's degree in social work, certifications with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, extensive training in Muay Thai, and an inherent ebullience, Ella epitomizes what's possible on a plant-forward diet.

And there is SO much more to Ella's story. This episode is packed with heretofore untold revelations and personal tales from her remarkable life journey!

"That grief felt so different. It was maybe the worst grief of my life, and at the same time, I let myself have it. I let myself be in it. I didn't eat my way out of it. I didn't turn to food. I didn't turn to exercise. I didn't turn to any of those old unhealthy coping mechanisms. And I say unhealthy because I would have over-exercised. Anything to run: drinking or drugs or anything like that. I just sat in it. And I cried, and I cried, and I cried." - Ella Magers

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Ella's battle with depression
    • How she freed herself from dependence on pharmaceuticals
    • Her experiences with DMT and how it changed her
    • The pressures of being a fitness paragon
    • Overcoming exercise addiction
    • Her therapeutic experience at a spiritual retreat in Peru
    • How she learned to cope with grief after suffering a monumental loss
