246 - Eat to Beat Your Metabolism with Dr. William Li Sep 06, 2023
    Show notes

Is it possible to turn back the clock on our metabolism, burn fat, and increase longevity, all while being able to enjoy the food we eat? According to our guest today, it most certainly is.

Dr. William Li is an internal medicine specialist, scientist, and New York Times best-selling author. His groundbreaking work in the field of angiogenesis – which is the process of developing new blood vessels in the body – has led to 40 new medical treatments for cancer, diabetes, and obesity, to name a few.

In his new book, Eat to Beat Your Diet: Burn Fat, Heal Your Metabolism, and Live Longer, Dr. Li shatters some of the myths we've been conditioned to believe about metabolism, weight loss, and the role fat plays in the human body.

In this wildly informative episode, we take a deep dive into what we should actually be eating and doing to be the healthiest, fittest version of ourselves!

"People go crazy about insulin spikes and glucose spikes. You know what? I sort of want people to kind of chill out about that because those things do happen. But if you listen to your body and be reasonable, your tank is running on empty, go fill up, don't eat too much, don't overflow your tank. Okay? If you're at the gas station and when you put the nozzle in, and it goes click and you know the gas tank's full, you put the nozzle away, and you drive off. Now, imagine if there was no clicker and the gas tank filled up. What would happen? The gas would come out of the tank, spill down the side of the car, around the tires, around your shoes, and guess what? You would be standing in a dangerous, flammable mess, toxic mess. That's what happens when you overeat." – Dr. William Li

What we discuss in this episode:

    • A clear and simple explanation of human metabolism.

    • The truth about body fat.

    • The importance of listening to your body and being mindful while you eat.

    • Sleep, fasting, and burning fat.

    • Dr. Li's routine to optimize his metabolism.

    • How excess body fat slows your metabolism.

    • Why we gain weight in middle age and what we can do about it.

    • How chronic stress can cause weight gain?

    • The different types of fat.

    • How the body's defenses can be activated by food.

    • How our immune system is linked to our metabolism.

    • Inflammation and excess body fat.

    • How to create balance in the body through food.

    • The dangers of processed foods to the metabolism and immune system.

245 - Black Hair, Black Barbie, and Datemares with Actress Hayley Marie Norman Aug 30, 2023
    Show notes

Today's guest is best described as a multifaceted force of nature. Hayley Marie Norman is an actor, writer, activist, and podcast host. She's lit up the screen with Hollywood legends Will Smith, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy, to name a few. In her wildly entertaining podcast called Datemare with Hayley Marie Norman, she brings her effervescence and comedic prowess to discussing her dating life post-divorce with notable guests and tales that will shock and delight. And as an activist in Hollywood, Hayley uses her platform to share the vegan message and shine a light on the cruelty and environmental destruction for which animal agriculture is responsible.

So join us today as we take a deep dive into everything from activism to adventure to affairs of the heart!

"Erykah Badu has this great quote that's something along the lines of "vegan food or plant-based eating is the original soul food," and it's true because it is, and when I think about veganism I think about the government, the higher forces poisoning us for profit, because that's essentially what is happening and what has happened since the beginning of time. And I think when black people were uprooted in the most brutal way possible and forced to come to America and start their lives over, I can't even imagine, even though those are my ancestors, I can't even imagine the brutality, and so I think that there was a level of you have to find joy and survive in whatever way you can when your circumstances are so brutal. So, I think that there was a level of this is what we're given, and we're going to make the best with what we have, and then like anything, these things get handed down, generation to generation, but I think that there is like a global awakening." – Hayley Marie Norman

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Hayley's journey to veganism and how eating a vegan diet affected her.

    • Her thoughts on the SAG and WGA strikes.

    • EMDR and EFT therapies and how they've been beneficial to Hayley.

    • The genesis of Hayley's Datemare podcast and her baffling experiences on dating apps.

    • What it's like for her to date as a vegan.

    • The chance encounter that launched Hayley's acting career.

    • How Hayley remains true to herself and uses her platform to promote veganism.

    • That special Deal or No Deal episode, African-American Barbie, and a serious datemare.

At Plant Chompers, Chris offers entertaining, science-based content delivered with wit and verve on the benefits of a plant-dominant diet. He debunks popular myths while exposing marketing tactics that encourage unhealthy eating habits. The videos are terrific, uplifting, and we challenge you to watch just one!

"You may be able to eat some kinds of fish now still and help wreck the planet while you do it. Being an earth scientist, it's a huge worry for me. But you're not going to be able to do it for much longer the way we're treating our waterways, you know. All the stuff that's going into the waterways, which goes into the oceans, which goes into the fish, you know. So, I think we're left with, do the omega-3 pills work? And I don't know. There are a few things… Well, there's algae too. I mean, the fish eat algae. So you don't have to take a supplement. You can eat food. And then there's the ethical part, which is fish feel." – Chris MacAskill

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Chris's childhood and how he survived being homeless on the streets of Oakland.

    • How he was able to succeed in school despite being at a disadvantage.

    • What Chris and his wife eat in a day.

    • The reasons why fish consumption is deleterious to human health and planetary wellbeing.

    • How the cattle and dairy industries successfully conditioned us to eat their products.

    • What inspired Chris to launch Plant Chompers?

242 - Winning Ultramarathons on Plants with Austin Meyer Aug 09, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today, Austin Meyer, is a documentarian, journalist, podcaster, and animal rights activist, giving a voice to those whose stories might not otherwise be heard. He's worked for HBO, The New York Times, and National Geographic, to name a few outlets, and his filmmaking has taken him to faraway places like India, Nepal, and Zambia, where Austin chose to adopt a plant-based diet.

Austin is also a passionate ultrarunner. And on April 15th of this year, with a time of ten hours and seven minutes, Austin showed the world what a vegan athlete can accomplish by winning the Zion 100K Trail Race.

This is a must-listen episode for anyone trying to achieve the improbable and for any naysayers claiming it can't be done on a plant-based diet!

"I will say one of the interesting elements is that most of the ultra-athletes who I see when it comes to their nutrition game around race day will actually move towards my end of the spectrum when it comes to race day. Like most people aren't eating dairy, they're not having meat when it comes to this day where you need to perform, which is kind of an interesting element." – Austin Meyer

What we discuss in this episode:

    • The major life changes Austin experienced that prompted him to adopt a plant-based diet.

    • How he maintained a plant-based diet while living in a rural village in Zambia.

    • How Austin transitioned to journalism and documentary filmmaking after playing soccer at Stanford.

    • What he experienced and learned about himself in the first few years as an ultrarunner.

    • What Austin eats and drinks while he's training and during a race.

    • What he did differently to win the Zion 100K Trail Race.

    • What Austin is doing to promote veganism.

    • Austin's experiences working with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof.

    • Roger's upbringing and what inspired him to become vegan.

239 - Gen Z Will Not Be Hoodwinked by Got Milk with Marielle Williamson Jul 19, 2023
    Show notes

In April of 2023, today's guest, Marielle Williamson, planned to hold an event for fellow students at Eagle Rock High School to promote the benefits of plant milks and highlight the consequences of dairy milk consumption and production. However, the school's administration informed her she could only promote the benefits of plant milks if she did so for dairy milk, too, citing a federal law stating any information that could directly or indirectly restrict the sale or marketing of cow's milk on school campuses is prohibited. So, on May 2nd of this year, a lawsuit was filed against her school district and the USDA on Marielle's behalf for violating her First Amendment rights.

Tune in to this very special episode to hear the remarkable story of an exceptionally courageous student who's taking a stand against government corruption and corporate greed! "And then, the plant-based milk, which I'm lucky that my school offers plant-based milk, but there's only like two or three of them. They run out like that. And there are also– Two or three cartons, or two or three kinds of milk, plant milk? Cartons. Cartons. Oh my gosh. For all hundreds of you? Yeah, and even then, it's hidden. I say hidden. I don't know if it's intentional or not. It's behind all of the colorful cow's milk, behind like a wall, where only the cafeteria person can go around and open it and grab you yours, and you can only get it if you have a doctor's note, or a medical note, stating that you have a medical condition signed by a doctor or parent." – Marielle Williamson

What we discuss in this episode:

    • Why Marielle chose to adopt a vegan diet.

    • How Marielle's family responded to her transition to veganism.

    • How cow's milk has been promoted in Marielle's high school, and her efforts to promote plant milks.

    • A brief history of the National School Lunch Program.

    • How dairy is being pushed on children despite 70-95 percent of students being unable to digest it.

    • How the USDA prevents school administrators from providing healthier alternatives to students.

    • Why soy milk is the healthy alternative to dairy.

    • Marielle's lawsuit and what she hopes it accomplishes.
