262 - How Kraft Could Kill Veganism with Entrepreneur Michael Schwarz Dec 27, 2023
    Show notes

Growing up in South Africa to a family of activists and witnessing the devastating effects of apartheid, today's guest, Michael Schwarz, had his moral compass set to true north at an early age.

Driven by a profound sense of justice and a desire to combat the deleterious effects dairy has on our planet, he decided to step away from a 25-year career as an intellectual property lawyer and change the food industry by launching Treeline cheese – an independent vegan cheese company.

Michael also appeared in episode 76, where we learned all about his remarkable upbringing, the incredible work his father did as a defense attorney – including the trial of Nelson Mandela, where Michael's father defended Mandela's co-defendant and won – and how he made the transition from being a lawyer himself to a vegan cheese entrepreneur.

So if you're interested in learning what it's like to run a small vegan cheese company in an era where conglomerates want to take over the industry with cheap knockoffs – and powerful entities like the dairy lobby of Canada are after you – you definitely want to tune in!

"If you look at the products that these larger companies are making, they just aren't good. Take a look at Kraft's so-called plant-based Philadelphia cheese. It is basically almost entirely saturated fat. It has no protein. It's calories and saturated fat. And that's the bad fat. It's not olive oil or anything like that. It's stuff your cardiologist tells you you need to cut down on dramatically, right? I mean, you can eat an entire tub of that stuff and get zero protein. So what does that do to the public's image of vegan food? Is anyone who's a nonvegan gonna say, 'Oh, I'd far rather eat this stuff with no protein, no nutritional value.' So is that really helping the vegan movement when people look at it and say, 'This is vegan food?' Come on. The image of vegan food, I think, is being harmed." - Michael Schwarz

What we discuss in this episode:

    - How the Canadian dairy lobby is trying to block Michael's trademark.

    - The threat vegan products pose to Big Dairy.

    - How meat and dairy conglomerates are hurting vegan brands and working to inhibit progress.

    - Tips for consumers to navigate making purchases that align with their ethics.

    - How Michael makes Treeline cheeses more environmentally friendly.

    - Why it's important to support smaller vegan brands.

    - Treeline's delicious new products and plans for the future.

261 - The Next Girl Exposes Dairy's Secrets with Filmmaker Lisa DeCrescente Dec 20, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today has done whatever it takes to grow the vegan community by working tirelessly in many different avenues. A vegan for over 20 years and a former restaurateur, Lisa DeCrescente is now the director of special projects at Farm Animal Rights Movement, she's a board member for Sustainable Earth Eating, AND she's the writer of the powerful, heart-wrenching short film The Next Girl, which has already received a plethora of awards and has a twist of an ending that will leave you floored.

You definitely want to stay with us as we talk about this profound film and hear Lisa's thoughts on how to be the most effective difference-maker possible!

"I think it's important to address that there are two purposes here. Yes, this movie is for vegans. This is for people who already know because once they see it, they realize this is another tool they can use to share with people who are just on that edge or who are curious or really need to understand something. And maybe this is a way to approach them differently than other ways they've attempted to. Friends, family, coworkers. But it's also for people who are not vegan because they won't see a documentary or a film about animals because, at that moment in time, when they think about it, it's not on their radar. They don't care, or they think it's not true. Or they just don't want to know. They know but they don't want to know. We find that a lot. Or they're in denial. Exactly. And I don't know if we'll get to those people with this film because if they're in denial even showing them footage, they'll say, 'Well, you know, this is a very, very random thing.' They don't realize that this occurs every day all over the world, all the time." - Lisa DeCrescente

What we discuss in this episode:

    - How Lisa came up with the concept of The Next Girl.

    - The conditions dairy cows live in and the abuse they endure.

    - The fates of male and female calves.

    - How the treatment of dairy cows is woefully overlooked.

    - The importance of having a "why" when adopting a vegan lifestyle.

    - Why Lisa decided to become vegan.

    - Lisa's advice for vegans in relationships with non-vegans.

    - Events Lisa is planning in 2024 and how you can see and support The Next Girl.

    Show notes

As a college athlete, Becca suffered from depression, anxiety, and a crippling eating disorder, but after five years of yo-yo dieting and binging, she changed her mindset and took control of her own healing journey. She lost 70 pounds and reclaimed her life. Now, Becca guides others to take their mental, emotional, and physical well-being to new heights.

Becca was also a superstar basketball player at her Arizona high school and was inducted into the Tolleson Basketball Hall of Fame, among many other accolades. She got a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska, and when she transferred to San Jose State, she set 3-point and free throw records. Today, she's an assistant basketball coach at Yavapai College in Arizona.

So, if you're ready to take control of your health and change your relationship with food, you're definitely going to want to tune in to hear our conversation with the next rising star in the wellness space!

"In the black community, a lot of it you want to be thick. Think of Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj. That's like the image of a lot of black girls, not speaking for the whole community, but that's oftentimes what people are striving for. I didn't strive to be thick, and I didn't have this aspiration to be super thin. I was really just like, I want to be strong, I want to be lean, you know. And I think that kind of just stemmed from me being an athlete at the time, too. Like it was always having that validation that my body was good enough to be able to play. Because I grew up in West Phoenix, which was, you know, more middle class, lower class, I remember when I would have liked club games out in East Phoenix. There'd be white moms, I'd be like, wow they look so healthy, so vibrant, and like so young, and I didn't really understand why until I got older. And then I realized, I was like, well, it comes down to, you know, the education, the income, awareness of nutrition and health. And I think that because that is lacking in the black community, then there's naturally this, maybe not an aspiration to be a certain way." - Becca Serenity

What we discuss in this episode:

    - Becca's upbringing and diet.

    - How a basketball injury in college set the stage for Becca's struggles.

    - How Becca counsels players struggling with weight.

    - Becca's tips for achieving a healthy weight.

    - The importance of removing processed foods from your diet.

    - How whole foods reignited Becca's relationship with food.

    - The importance of mindfulness and how to be more mindful every day.

    - Becca's approach with clients and the tools and tips she provides in her 90-day program.

    - The importance of your environment in achieving lasting change.

259 - Dotsie & Alexandra Get Real on Health, Love, Books, Sex, & More Dec 06, 2023
    Show notes

Ever wonder what an Olympian does every day to stay fit, or how an actress with a storied career navigated Hollywood? In today's fun and insightful episode, Dotsie and Alexandra decided to interview each other for a change, and open up like never before, tackling everything from their successful marriages to health struggles, from activism to surviving the holidays with family. Nothing is off limits as this dynamic duo shares their personal stories, triumphs, and regrets, with something for everyone to take away from in this very special, must-listen episode!

"You were a bike messenger, weren't you? That was a little bit later. Like, I literally just got a bike and started riding and just fell in love with riding my bike. Then what kind of started it all I just said, 'I'm riding my bike so much I want to do something good with riding my bike.' So, I decided to sign up for the California AIDS ride, which at the time, you had to raise $1,200 to enter it, from San Francisco to Los Angeles. And it's a 500-mile route. They don't take a direct route. I think it's actually 600 miles. And so I did that California AIDS ride, and it's on the road, so everybody had a road bike, but I was on a mountain bike and I guess I was staying with some of the fast men throughout the journey. And so at the end a couple of them said it's a little odd that you're on a mountain bike and that you just started riding and that you're able to stay up there in the front of the peloton with us. I think you should try a race or something. And it was just like, 'I don't know. Where do I do a race?' Long story short, I tried to race and then I fell in love with cycling as a sport, and as a competition." - Dotsie Bausch

What we discuss in this episode:

    - How Dotsie and Alexandra stay balanced, fit, and happy.

    - What Alexandra does to sleep well.

    - Habits they've learned and adopted from past guests.

    - How Dotsie and Alexandra cope with stress.

    - How Dotsie started cycling, and what she overcame to become a champion cyclist.

    - How Alexandra launched her career as an actress.

    - Dotsie and Alexandra share daily practices that keep their marriages strong.

258 - How to find your 'Why Power' with Dr. Brooke Goldner Nov 29, 2023
    Show notes

For Goldner—and the hundreds of seriously ill patients she has treated since then—it really is that simple. Food can heal.

This episode is for anyone who struggles (or knows someone who is struggling) with a health issue doctors say they can't cure, only manage. The message is eye-opening, inspiring, and attainable. It might just save a life.

257 - What Beating Cancer and Amazing Holiday Recipes Have in Common: Chef & Nutritionist Lauren Kretzer Nov 22, 2023
    Show notes

Our guest today, Lauren Kretzer, is a vegan chef, recipe developer, and holistic nutritionist. She has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants and cooked privately for celebrities. Her work has been featured in magazines like Vogue and New York Magazine, PLUS her recipes are in some of your favorite vegan cookbooks.

In 2020, while the world was being forever altered by a pandemic, she was forced to square off against a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Rather than undergo formal treatment, Lauren chose to fight back with a holistic approach.

Today, Lauren is cancer-free, and she has a message – food can be our greatest healer.

Tune in to learn from this renowned chef and cancer survivor what foods we should all be eating more of!

"Being plant-based around the holidays is not as difficult as people anticipate. I think in terms of the menu, speaking about Thanksgiving specifically, but also true for the December holidays as well, most people are excited about the sides. So, when you think about Thanksgiving, even meat eaters will tell you that turkey is probably not high on their list of things that they really love. It's just part of the tradition and part of the centerpiece of the table, but you can have lots of beautiful centerpieces for a table that aren't a bird. You know, I personally splurge for a beautiful floral arrangement that day, which I normally don't do, but I will, you know, go all out on that. And then I'll make sure that I have gorgeous dishes of lots of other abundant things on the table. So, we still have mashed potatoes in my family, we just make them plant-based. We have vegan stuffing. We have vegan green beans. We have cranberry sauce, of course, which is naturally vegan. All the traditional Thanksgiving dishes can be made plant-based." – Lauren Kretzer

What we discuss in this episode:

    - Switch4Good's efforts to remove dairy from the dietary guidelines.

    - The events that led to Lauren receiving a cancer diagnosis.

    - How she overcame fear and negativity after receiving her diagnosis.

    - Why Lauren chose a holistic approach rather than conventional therapy.

    - The changes she made to remain cancer-free.

    - Lauren's list of anti-cancer foods.

    - The importance of reducing stress and the stress reduction techniques Lauren employs.

    - What she does every day to stay healthy.

    - Lauren's tips for raising vegan children.

    - Her plant-based holiday tips.

    - Lauren's work as a recipe developer.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY - Cruelty Free Shopping with Kim Paschen Nov 17, 2023
    Show notes

How do you know if a product is cruelty-free if you can't trust the label? According to Kim Paschen—Program Manager for Leaping Bunny—there is no regulated definition for cruelty-free. That means companies who use this label are not held accountable and may very well include ingredients that have been tested on animals. When it comes to compassionate cosmetics that are truly animal-free, things get complicated, but that's where Leaping Bunny comes in. The certification organization upholds companies to rigorous standards to ensure every last ingredient is free from animal testing. 256 - Changing Hearts & Minds About Eating Animals with Dr. Faraz Harsini Nov 15, 2023
    Show notes

Born and raised in a country where being true to himself is a crime punishable by death, our guest today, Dr. Faraz Harsini, is familiar with oppression and brutality. Dr. Harsini is a senior scientist at the Good Food Institute, where he works to bring the world sustainable, cruelty-free protein. He is also the CEO and founder of ASAP, which stands for Allied Scholars for Animal Protection. It's a nonprofit that supports student advocates and future vegan leaders to abolish cruelty to humans and nonhumans.

Tune in to hear how this highly accomplished scientist, activist, and outspoken member of the LGBT community is applying his knowledge and passion to raise awareness about animal rights as a social justice issue to reach his goal of ending speciesism.

"I always encourage people, especially vegans that you know, to say something. I know so many people who are dedicating their lives to animal rights and veganism today just because some random person said something in the past. So, every little action, every time we speak up it matters. Just because somebody gets offended and sad doesn't mean that you did something wrong." – Dr. Faraz Harsini

What we discuss in this episode:

    - Dr. Harsini's upbringing in Iran.

    - His harrowing experiences as an activist in Iran.

    - His journey to veganism.

    - Why animal rights is a social justice issue.

    - How Dr. Harsini empowers people to change.

    - What inspired Dr. Harsini to start ASAP.

    - The difference ASAP is making on college campuses.

    - Why humans aren't meant to eat meat.

255 - Meatless Meat and Dairy-Free Milk with Food Tech Whiz Dr. David Welch Nov 08, 2023
    Show notes

Though we live in a time when lots of alternative proteins are available to consumers, industrial animal agriculture continues to thrive and wreak havoc on the environment through deforestation, biodiversity loss, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, brilliant minds are working hard to find solutions to these pressing issues, and our guest today is one of them. David Welch, Ph.D., is a plant biologist, running coach, and the Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder of Synthesis Capital – a global food technology and alternative protein investor aiming to transform our food system and remove animals from the equation.

Tune in to hear our illuminating discussion with Dr. Welch about his work with new food technologies and alternative proteins, and on a personal level, how fitness and a plant-based diet played a key role in his preparation and recovery from heart surgery.

"I really believe that most of the products on the market today just don't taste good enough to help most consumers shift their dietary patterns, and I think as these new technologies come out, that's really going to change. Things are going to start tasting more and more like the actual meat and dairy products that most people like to eat." – Dr. David Welch What we discuss in this episode:

    - How being a plant-based athlete helped Dr. Welch recover from open heart surgery.

    - His experience recovering in the hospital as a vegan.

    - The importance of recovery time after workouts.

    - The foods Dr. Welch eats daily.

    - Different types of alternative proteins.

    - Synthesis Capital's work to help consumers turn away from meat and dairy products.

    - The truth about genetically modified food.

    - How cultivated meat is made
