I was sitting in my bedroom staring out of the window, it was cold and miserable outside, exactly matching how I was feeling. I had told my Dad that I had homework to do, but honestly I just wanted to be alone. I had felt like that for over a year now, ever since the day my Mum had disappeared. I tried to visualise her face, I did that at least 3 or 4 times a day, I was so scared that one day I would forget what she looked like.

We had no idea why she had gone, one day she was there, the next day it was just me and Dad. I missed her so much, I missed her singing in the kitchen and the sound of her laughter when Dad told her one of his jokes. Since she had left there had been no more happiness in our house. Dad and I were just existing.

“Don’t you like it dear?” she asked as she smoothed her mini skirt, watching herself in the mirror.

Ever since my father left my mother a few months ago for a younger woman, my mother had been on this craze to try to look and feel younger than she really was. When I asked my mother if everything was ok she would usually respond with, “I’m fine dear,” But her drastic decision to do plastic surgery told me otherwise. I looked at my Dad, so this was why he had brought me out to a nice restaurant for dinner! Before I had a chance to say anything a woman came over and stood beside my Dad. Dad put his arm around her and pulled her towards him.

“This is Katherine Smith.” Said Dad. “She is my fiance!”

My mouth fell open in shock,

How could Dad even think about getting married again, it was too quick.

I looked at the woman, she was tall, really tall, almost the same height as my Dad. She had long brown hair, I guess some people might say she was pretty, but I took an instant dislike to her. I didn’t need a new Mom, Dad and I had been getting along fine with just the two of us. Now she had come along and I just knew that she was going to spoil everything.

Being born into a poor family really sucks! You go to school, get good grades and then go to a job that barely pays you enough to meet your basic expenses. I would often dream of things I would buy such as cars, houses, clothes, shoes!! If only I had a way out of this paycheck to paycheck lifestyle I would take it in a heartbeat.

Dave and I met at the mall. I was purchasing some new work clothes when my card was declined. I was so embarrassed. He was next in line and offered to purchase my items. He asked if he could take me to lunch after and I said yes. After going on a few dates we decided to date exclusively.

Unlike my previous boyfriends who ran to the bathroom before the cheque came or snuck us into the cinema, Dave showered me with gifts and actually paid the bill when we ate at restaurants.

I waved goodbye to my grandma as she departed with the nurses to go to a care home.

“I’ll come to visit you every month,” I told her and she gave me the sweetest smile ever. I loved my grandma a lot. She had looked after me all my life but as she grew older she started getting health issues.

After that, since I was still a minor at 15 I had to move in with my nearest kin and I had only one, my mother. It might seem strange to you but I had never seen my mom in my life, not even once.
