How to Survive the Startup Roller Coaster Ride Nov 07, 2019
    Show notes

Hold onto your seats folks because this episode of the Startup Life Show is a wild and exhilarating roller coaster ride!
Our guest, Adam Robinson, pulls back the curtain and candidly reveals the real startup stories you rarely hear. You'll feel the pain and the glory from his honest insights about the mistakes he made along the way, and the victories he pulled out from the ashes of burned attempts.
This is a terrific episode for folks who want to know what really happens when you launch a business. You will be inspired, and you will be a better founder from Adam's entrepreneurial adventure!
A little background about this magnificent man: After 8 years at Lehman Brothers (and Barclays Capital, post-bankruptcy) where he was trading credit default swaps, Adam decided to leave Wall Street to pursue his entrepreneurial dream.
In 2014, Adam conceived Robly Email Marketing, and in 2015 he launched the product and flipped the email marketing space on its head by guaranteeing 50% more email opens than all other competitors.
The marketplace response was huge, and in 2017, Robly was awarded #1 in Customer Satisfaction across the entire email marketing space… only 2 years after launching… that’s amazing!
After proving Robly’s viability, Adam’s fertile startup brain conjured up another company: GetEmail, which he and his team launched in 2019.
GetEmails is a powerful new technology that legally identifies up to 35% of your anonymous website traffic, and then sends you their email, home address, the page they visited on your site and more, via a daily update. It's 100% CAN-SPAM compliant as all the info is opted-in through third-party partners, and savvy Marketers are using GetEmails to build email lists, retarget visitors via their inbox, and even sending postcards in the mail. Plans start at $10 and Startup Life Show Listeners can try it free with their first 25 emails by using the discount code STARTUPLIFE! Finance 101 for Startup Founders Oct 27, 2019
    Show notes

Our guest, Olga Bashkatova, left the stable world of corporate accounting and boarded the startup roller coaster ride by working at startup companies - 5 of them in 7 years. She found the work inspirational and educational and quickly learned she could never return to her former career as a corporate CPA.
As the last startup she worked at filed for bankruptcy, Olga decided to launch her own business - NextStage Advisory - where she provides affordable outsourced CFO services to startups.
Olga’s typical clients are VC-backed Seed or Series A startups looking to clean up historical financials, establish a stable, monthly financial process, produce GAAP financial statements and reports, pass an audit, implement financial software, manage an outsourced payroll and benefits company… and hire/train an internal accounting team. In addition, she makes sure her clients maximize their valuations by focusing on revenue growth while cutting expenses, automating manual processes, and developing more mature operations.
Do I hear a "oh hell yeah" and a "yes please, right away please?!"
Olga dives into the must haves and the "nope, you don't need that right now" details every startup founder needs to know, including:
    * setting up proper books for YOUR business model
    * cleaning up financials so investors feel confident in your ability to run a business
    * cash flow projections vs. Income Statements and Balance Sheets
    * matching expenses with revenue
    * managing 90 days invoices with 30-day payables
    * why cleaning up your financials will give your business a better valuation with investors

Mom of Twins Creates a White-Glove Consignment Service for Toys and Baby Gear Oct 10, 2019
    Show notes

Feeling overwhelmed by the clutter of toys and baby gear taking over your home? Would you like to upcycle your stash of hardly used mother's little helpers, but can't find the time or energy to cart them to a consignment store?
Our guest, Rhonda Collins, knows exactly how you feel. A documentary film director and a Mom to twin daughters, Rhonda lived in a tiny apartment in Oakland, CA and hadn't seen her floors in years. Every time she went to declutter all the gear, she felt a pang from the guilt of how much she spent on all the toys and from the thought of throwing out perfectly good toys which would end up in a landfill.
Environmentally conscious and an avid recycler from a young age, Rhonda felt so uncomfortable to have all of this stuff and not know what to do with it, and not sure what would happen to it if she just donated it to the Salvation Army. She knew she had to solve the problem not just for her, but for society.
So she co-founded TOYCYCLE - the easiest way to buy and sell used toys and baby gear. Toycycle knows buying used merchandise can feel risky. They’re able to remove the risk with a high standard for their consignment program, fully vetted products and a Customer Satisfaction Guarantee.
Rhonda shares her startup journey, beginning when she left her documentary filmmaker career, where she spent 20 years playing a variety of roles – producer, director, editor – on many award-winning independent documentaries.
She reveals how she found the BEST CTO a founder could hope for, how she proved her original value proposition, and what she learned from her customers that caused her to have a sharp pivot in her business model, resulting in a much higher reward and experience for TOYCYCLE and its target market.

Baseball and Startup Life: Failure Isn't the End Point Sep 29, 2019

"The reality is you're going to fail more than you're going to succeed. And the goal of a good baseball player and a good entrepreneur, when dealing with things like rejection or failure, is to recognize that it isn't the end point. It's just another data point." ~ Justin Real
Our guest, Justin Real, has been obsessed with baseball his entire life. During his own baseball career, he experienced the stress of spending the end of high school competing for the attention of college team scouts.
This is where the idea for his startup, Realplay Sports, came from – Realplay is an AI powered technology company that delivers video of every swing, pitch, and catch that any player makes on a baseball or softball field. Its cameras capture every moment to help players improve, share their highlights with anybody, and hold on to memories. The platform helps high school and college athletes gain a competitive advantage in baseball and softball.
Justin shares his best startup stories, and yes... you will hear many baseball metaphors and analogies... because baseball and startup life have a lot in common!
