How a Video Game Enthusiast Became an Advocate and Role Model for Women and Minorities in the Gaming Industry Jul 18, 2019
    Show notes

A geek of all trades, our guest, Keisha Howard, has been a video game enthusiast since childhood. Growing up "geeky" resulted in her developing interests that were very different from her peers on Chicago's South Side.
With a degree in psychology and communications at DePaul University, Keisha acquired an understanding of consumer motivations that ultimately led her to real estate.
After a successful decade long career, Keisha's communications background and passion for business innovation led her to the Information Technology Industry, specifically social media, the video game industry and geek culture.
She quickly discovered that a considerable part of the industry's consumer and professional demographics were not being represented, so Keisha created Sugar Gamers – the new face of geek culture.
It began as a women's advocacy and networking group for consumers and professionals, but eventually blossomed into an organization that advocates for all demographics who are under served or not being represented at all.
Through Sugar Gamers, Keisha was able to monetize her interests in technology and connect people in the IT Community with other like-minded individuals, raising awareness of the under-representation of women in the Gaming Industry, and lobby to make sure corporations factor the needs of female consumers in their new offerings.
I found Keisha on Instagram and immediately vibed with her deep advocacy for women and minorities in tech and the gaming industries. She is the ultimate She-ro role model for geek goddesses.
    Keisha shares:
•How the recession pushed her into entrepreneurship
•Her response when the SyFy channel told her “you’re not good enough.”
•Why she launched SugarGamers (it began with a post on Craig’s List!)
•Her advice for introverts to manage social media engagement
•The complex demographics found in the gaming industry
•Her deep knowledge of Virtual and Augmented Reality and how this medium is ideal for businesses to tell their story
•A new co-ed game called Tachyon – the first hybrid live-and-augmented arena sport
•Project VIOLACEA, a cyberpunk game where we all can imagine ourselves in a future where we can solve problems.
•Why tech and the gaming industry need to represent more women and minorities
•The BEST advice for managing the entrepreneurship roller coaster ride
Here are some of my favorite quotes from our delicious conversation:
"It's astounding to me that it's 2019, but I've met young women who come up to me and have said, "I never knew that there were black women in gaming." It's shocking."
"With visibility comes responsibility to people who are watching you because you're inspiring people. There's not that many of me in the video game industry. I realized that I really have to see this through and I can't give up because it gets hard sometimes."
"Even though Sugar Gamers started off as the all-female organization advocating for our representation in video games, it since evolved for everyone who has the mission to see diversity and inclusion and accessibility in the industry. So now, our team is comprised of all types of people from all walks of life who understand that this is a space and opportunity for all of us."
"That has been such a gratifying experience for me because I've always wanted to work in the video game industry and not only was I able to start my own company, but now I'm working with people on actual products. So it's not just me advocating, but it's me creating things or helping to create things as well. That's really exciting."
"One of the interesting things I've learned especially being immersed and engaged actively with gamers of all walks of life is that kids will find me, and they are so happy when I can validate their interest and their passion in gaming as an adult becau

How a Human-Powered Tech Company Helps Users Achieve Their Wellness Goals Jul 11, 2019

A former CPA and Forensics Examiner, Jessica Lynch, founder of WishRoute, kept hearing people say “I wish.” I wish I were healthier, I wish I were stronger, I wish I were happier. She realized there was a “wish epidemic,” and when her research showed 92% of Americans fail to follow through with their goals, Jessica knew she had to find a way to help people realize their full potential.
    Jessica shares:
•her first startup story at the age of 10 (Hamsters are involved!)
•how her brother’s diagnosis of juvenile diabetes led to her having a deep awareness of health and wellness
•how the constant crises management life of a forensics examiner prepared her for being a founder
•how low-tech customer-centric reiterations helped her build a successful text-messaged based, human powered tech company around constant customer feedback
•the important but time-consuming process of bringing on an aligned CTO
•how she manages feelings of isolation as a founder
•how entrepreneurship has enhanced her life.
A few fave quotes from our delicious conversation:
"I've learned there are a lot of different ways to be successful. There's rarely one right answer. So it's important to try something and see what happens, but also be willing to pivot quickly if you realize it's not the best thing for you."
"One of the ways I think I've evolved as a person is being willing to lean on others. It's hard to be vulnerable sometimes, but I've learned it's just so important for me to have really good support outside of Wish Route."

Through her diverse background in marketing, advertising, sales, and journalism – ranging from large corporations like Microsoft to startups – Christina has established systems that help her understand how any audience best consumes information and how to create content that is useful and memorable.
Listeners - Christina is going to up your presentation game – especially for pitching your business to investors. She also shares terrific insights for solopreneurs launching a service-based business, and how she manages isolation.
Here's some actionable advice Christina shares during our delicious conversation:
"Begin with the end in mind. Who’s your audience? What’s your goal? And then how are they going to be able to relate to that goal? If you can start out with those three questions in mind, it’s going to help you craft that story.
In business, there’s different story archetypes, but my favorite one is the hero’s journey. You set the scene, identify that there’s some sort of problem, monster, your conflict. Then bam. Here’s the hero. Now, your hero might be your solution, your product. Even better if you can make the hero of the story your customer and your service or product is their weapon or tool.
Now what’s the new reality now that they’ve used this service or product and beat this monster, this problem... not just that they’ve solved the problem but what’s the new reality? Paint that picture. Why do I feel better now? How am I moving forward towards this new reality?"

Helping Startup Founders Focus, Execute and Thrive Jun 25, 2019
    Show notes

"The odd thing about being a startup founder is it requires probably the broadest set of skills of almost any job out there. You need to know a little bit about marketing, operations, everything. Yet despite the fact that it has this huge requirement for different skill sets, it's one of the very few jobs on the planet that requires absolutely no prior experience.
You can't get a job in a restaurant as a waiter unless you waited someplace else. You can't get a job most places unless you have experience. Here we have a complex job with dozens of skills needed, and you can just wake up one day and go, I'm a founder. That's when the hard work starts."
I love this quote by our guest and fellow Startup Founder Coach Tony Clemendor!
Tony entered the startup ecosystem straight out of Harvard Business School and has loved startups ever since. For over 25 years, he's been a founder, an investor, an advisor, a mentor, a teacher, and now a founder coach who works primarily with early stage founders and first time CEOs.
Tony became a coach because during his early startups, he'd wished that he'd had frequent access to someone who could help him accelerate his startup education and reduce his "rookie mistakes".
Having learned the ropes, Tony is happily serving the next generation of founders.
Tony works and lives in the heart of Silicon Valley where in addition to coaching founders and volunteering as a mentor at WeWork Labs, Tony also serves as the Silicon Valley Chair for The Founders Network, a peer to peer support and networking group.
Tony shares actionable advice and a deep understanding of the Startup Founder's journey, including tips for:
    * what you need to know when presenting to investors
    * which investments will further the business vs. wasting money
    * why customer inertia is the most underestimated challenges facing a founder
    * aspirin vs. vitamin litmus test
    * understanding the difference between "end of the world events" and a not so bad problem
    * dissolving chokeholds on the business and the founder's mindset
    * managing isolation

How Startup Founders can Attract Top Talent in a Competitive Market Jun 19, 2019

With savings from his carpet-cleaning job at the young age of 19, he decided to leave college one day after freshmen orientation to start and bootstrap his first company. It published over 180 iOS apps and over 50 reached Apple's Top Charts, amassing over 5 million downloads, resulting in an acquisition.
Chino’s advice for attracting top talent when you can’t pay “Google/Microsoft” salaries is impactful and valuable for startup founders.
Chino also goes deep into what his parents said when he dropped out of college during Freshman Orientation, how he found developers for his first few app companies, proving an app’s value proposition, finding startup support while living in a desert for startups, how the concept for Keyring came about, raising capital vs. bootstrapping, and a list of books that should be in every founders “to be read” pile.

Venture Capital, Angel Investor, Bootstrapping - Which Funding Strategy is Best for Your Startup? Jun 13, 2019
    Show notes

Venture Capital, Angel Investors... or bootstrapping... MONEY is oxygen for a startup.
But how does a founder decide which oxygen mask is best for their business? I have some Andelicious Advice to help you choose the best funding option… and oxygen… for your startup.
When I’m gardening, driving into Boston, or doing household chores, I love tuning into podcasts.
The other day I had two back-to-back podcasts that got me thinking about the question – which oxygen does your business need to soar?
The first podcast I listened to was Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn… and he was interviewing Ben Chestnut, the co-founder of MailChimp.
They were focusing on how MailChimp grew without any investment capital. They completely bootstrapped the business.
Throughout the interview, Reid was highlighting the importance of Venture Capital to provide rocket fuel for a company's growth. Given his podcast title, Masters of Scale, he clearly is all about scaling a business.
His final words of advice: "while I greatly admire the tenacity of Ben and everyone who bootstraps, my hope for each of you listening is that you give a thought to what investment might bring you: More speed. More support. And yes, more on-target advice."
After listening to Reid's episode with Ben, I popped up the next item on my listening queue – and it was Gary Vee. Who just happened to be chatting about the exact opposite tactic. Bootstrapping your business.
His adamant advice: Take the long road (like Mailchimp) and keep your company employee and customer centric.
Yes, it will take longer and yes, you will work harder and have missed opportunities due to learning cureve challenges. Let’s face it… Those who can't raise capital are forced to make money.
Which oxygen to choose is not an easy decision.
What I've seen and learned after 4 businesses of my own and mentoring clients is that too much capital can mask holes in your business. Founders don’t see problems surface soon enough, and they often over hire after receiving a cash infusion.
Being forced to keep operations lean results, IMHO, in digging deeper into creative solutions for tough problems; being more nimble and able to pivot faster; and it keeps the company culture on the employees and the customers, not the investors and their agenda to meet their portfolio’s ROI.
Here’s the scoop about VCs – they do a terrific job at raising big funds - $30-$100 million and more. Their customer are the investors in their fund. They need to keep their funders happy. So they become all about your business’ exit… via a sale or an IPO. That’s the only way they’re going to get their money back.
In addition, VCs will get more involved in your business. They will take at least one seat on your Board of Directors and you will find yourself working extra hard to meet their expectations.
I've raised VC capital - $8 million for our dot com… and we also turned down $14 million from Bear Stearns, may they rest in peace - and I've raised Angel capital - and I've used pure grit and a charming personality to bootstrap a business.
I’m a huge fan of bootstrapping and attracting aligned angel investors. They’re called Angels for a reason… but it’s up to you, the founder, to make sure they are aligned with your values and company’s mission. If you don’t feel a good vibe about the angel investor… WALK AWAY.
Capital intensive businesses are going to need capital investment. Life Science, Biomed, brick'n'mortar businesses need a long runway until their products are ready to go to market. Electronic consumer products are always in need of some kind of funding, often taking advantage of crowdfunding or an angel investor to build a bridge from prototype to manufacturing to distribution.

Adam shares his best advice for dissolving chokeholds on a new business, especially when it’s the founder’s mindset.
    This delicious conversation includes:
    * how Adam serves founders and senior executives
    * advice for founders on how to build out teams and evolve into a deeper leadership role
    * Adam's favorite founders, articles and podcasts... and how to challenge yourself after reading/listening to the advice by saying "How do I apply this, and how do I actually use it?"
    * the power of self awareness and delegating tasks that drain you
